Rovio teases Star Wars-themed Angry Birds sequel

If you thought the Angry Birds series couldn’t possibly get any better than the last installment, Angry Birds Space, you might be in for a big surprise. Rovio just teased an image that hints at a possible Star Wars-themed Angry Birds sequel, complete with an animated GIF that shows off the iconic light saber.

Rovio first tweeted an extremely vague image and simply said to “check back tomorrow for a hint!”. Obviously, we had no clue what the image was, other than that it was most likely one of the Angry Birds covered in a robe of some sort, but that could’ve pointed to a number of different possibilities.

However, Rovio later tweeted a link to their official Angry Birds Tumblr blog where they posted an animated version of the original image. This time, it gives it all away thanks to the glowing light saber and the light that gets casted on the face of the Angry Bird. The Tumbler page says to head to Times Square in New York City on October 8 at 10am EST, and also to head to a Toys R Us at 8am EST that same day we’re guessing.

We’re not exactly sure what Times Square and Toys R Us will have in store as far as an Angry Birds sequel announcement. Our guess is that Rovio will have a launch trailer playing in Times Square on one of the big screens, while Toys R Us might possibly have collectible Star Wars-themed Angry Birds plush toys go on sale on launch day. Then again, we’ll just have to wait and find out on Monday.

Delta Six controller brings fragging to life, worries your friends

Chances are you know someone who takes their CoD a little too seriously — well, this peripheral is for them. The Delta Six controller is the latest brainchild of Avenger inventor David Kotkin, made to please hardcore FPS gamers with immersive and responsive input. A built-in accelerometer is used for aiming, while the faux recoil and acting out a reload will put you closer to real combat than an appearance on Stars Earn Stripes. The hardware also features a scattering of pressure sensors — allowing you, for example, to bring up the sights by meeting cheek with gun body, or if you’re feeling lazy, squeezing the side of it instead. Depending on your class bias, you can add and retract plastic from the main frame for an SMG, assault or sniper rifle form factor (see below for the gist). There’s no word on availability, or if it will actually improve your game, but the price is slated as $89 at launch. After the break is a short product demo in video form, although we suggest you skip straight to 1:30 to avoid the awkward live-action CTF scene.

Sony Playstation Mobile store now live, offers cross-platform games and apps from $0.80

Sony Playstation Mobile store now live, offers crossplatform games and apps from $080

After what feels like a mighty long time since it was first announced, Sony’s cross-platform PlayStation Mobile store is now up and running with an initial line-up of games (plus one lonely-looking app) for the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Certified Android devices. That hardware category currently includes Sony’s latest tablets and Xperias, plus HTC One-branded handsets — check the source link for a full list and installation instructions. So far, we can access PSM on the Vita via a new tab on the PlayStation Store, and we know that readers are having luck on devices in the US — including the Xperia Play — but the One X (both global and AT&T) has only given us error messages. If you succeed or fail, please post your results below and we’ll update accordingly.

Update: Okay, there are definitely teething problems on HTC devices and we’re reaching out for an explanation. Meanwhile, owners of the Nexus 7 and the Xperia Ion on AT&T bring happier tidings.

Modern Warfare 3 is 50% off, free weekend on Steam

The latest installment in the Call of Duty series has been out for almost a year now, but it’s still an extremely hyped up game that a lot of people are still playing. However, if you’re a PC gamer and you haven’t yet bought Modern Warfare 3, now is probably the best change you’ll get. It’s 50% off this weekend on Steam, which means you only have to pay $30.

The Infinity Ward-developed first-person shooter is also having a free weekend on Steam. From now until Sunday at 1pm Pacific Time, you can play Modern Warfare 3 at no cost. This is great if you’re interested in buying the game, but want to try it out first. Plus, the $30 deal lasts all weekend, so if the half-off price still doesn’t convince you, you can try out the game for free during the weekend and buy it on Sunday before the deal closes.

However, it doesn’t state what exact features you do and do not have access to. Most free weekends on Steam only involve the multiplayer portion of games, so there’s usually no access to the singleplayer campaign. We’re guessing you’ll only have access to multiplayer, but Steam doesn’t mention anything regarding that, so it’s something you’ll have to find out yourself when launching up the game.

In other Steam news, the Total War series is also on sale this weekend. You can pick up Total War: Rome for just a $1 (90% off), or get the Total War Master Collection, which includes every Total War game, for only $31 (75% off). You can buy the Total War games separately if you’d like, although they’re only discounted by 25%.

Minecraft creator refusing to support Windows 8

If you’re an avid Minecraft fan and just can’t get enough of the sandbox-style game, we hope you’re not planning to upgrade to Windows 8. The creator and developer of Minecraft, Markus “Notch” Persson, has stated that he won’t be bringing Minecraft to the Windows 8 platform because of Microsoft locking down the new OS.

Persson tweeted earlier yesterday that Microsoft contacted him about certifying Minecraft for Windows 8. The game developer humbly declined, saying that he “told them to stop trying to ruin the PC as an open platform.” He added that he’d “rather have Minecraft not run on Windows 8 at all than to play along.”

He went on to protest Microsoft‘s new operating system in a way, mentioning that “maybe we can convince a few people not to switch to Windows 8 that way.” We’re not sure how many people will take his advice, but knowing that he’s a popular name in the gaming industry, I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of gamers passed on a Windows 8 upgrade.

This wouldn’t be the first time that Persson has bashed Windows 8. In a Reddit AMA thread last month he stated, “I hope we can keep a lot of open and free platforms around. If Microsoft decides to lock down Windows 8, it would be very very bad for Indie games and competition in general…there’s going to be a lot of very interesting games in ten years, mixed in with the huge AAA games that we all love.”

Bad Piggies hits number 1 after just 3 hours

Rovio‘s latest creation, Bad Piggies, released today, and in just three hours the new game is at the number one spot in the iTunes App Store. The Finland-based game developing company released the Angry Birds spinoff earlier today, and it seems that fans are already eating it up, especially since the game released early in the day on a school and work day.

In this new title, you play the pigs’ perspective as opposed to the birds. However, the gameplay is completely different. In Bad Piggies, you build different land and air vehicles that will get you from point A to point B as quick as possible. Overall, the mechanics are great and it has decent lasting appeal.

Of course, Rovio isn’t new to success. Their Angry Birds series is one of the most popular mobile games of all time. Their most recent Angry Birds installment, Angry Birds Space, hit a whopping 100 million downloads in two-and-a-half months. With Bad Piggies already having so much success within three hours of its launch, it wouldn’t be a shocker if it broke Angry Birds’ records.

If you still have yet to get in on the fun that is Bad Piggies, the game is available for free on Android (ad-supported), and is priced at $0.99 on iOS. You can also grab the game for both Windows and Mac. Both versions are $5 each. Rovio says that more levels will come to the game, and they hope to develop a franchise from it just like they did with Angry Birds.

Humble Indie Bundle 6 comes packing with Torchlight, Bit.Trip Runner, and more

If you’re a gamer who enjoys indie games while also saving money, then you’ve no doubt heard of the Humble Indie Bundle. It’s in its sixth rendition already and it comes with some pretty sweet titles. The best part is, you can pay whatever you want for the set of games. Only want to spend a penny? No problem! However, at least think about paying a little more, since the funds go to the Child’s Play charity.

Humble Indie Bundle 6 comes with Rochard, Shatter, S.P.A.Z., Torchlight, and Vessel. However, if you pay more than the average giving price (which is currently $6.08 as of this writing), you’ll also get Dustforce, Bit.Trip Runner, Gratuitous Space Battles, Jamestown, and Wizorb. This means you can get ten games for the price of at least $6 and some change.

On top of the games, you’ll also receive the soundtracks to nine of the games (Vessel excluded). Ten games and nine soundtracks sounds pretty good to me. They say it would cost you $135 if you bought all of this content at retail price, so we can’t really find a reason to say no.

All the games work on Windows and Mac. This is also the first time that all the games in the Humble Indie Bundle are supporting Linux. You can also import these into Steam. After your purchase, you’ll receive redeem keys to enter into Steam. After that, Steam will import these games into your library and you’ll be able to play them through the client.
