More OnLive management moves, Perlman out as investor Lauder settles for Chairman

As the OnLive storm continues to ride itself out, details of who the winners and losers are (mainly losers) keep washing up on the shore. Today’s casualty seems to be CEO Steve Perlman himself, who — just days after the firm reinventing itself — is “departing to work on his myriad of other projects.” In his place the former COO, Charlie Jablonski, is temporarily taking the reins, as well as continuing his role as head of operations in the new organization. Finally, completing this wave of announcements, is the news that chief investor, Gary lauder, will officially take the title of Chairman. So, as the new incarnation settles into its new structure, we’ll just have to sit tight, waiting to see what the next chapter in the OnLive story is.

PS Vita v1.80 update now available, PSOne titles for download revealed

Of all the new features in firmware version 1.80 we’re pretty sure that the ability to play PSOne classics was fairly high on people’s want-list. Well, the update is live, and with it a list of the titles available. There are nine on offer today for US Vita owners, which are: Arc the Lad, Cool Boarders 2, Final Fantasy VII, Hot Shots Golf 2, Jet Moto, Syphon Filter, Tomb Raider, Twisted Metal 2 and Wild Arms, with hopefully more to follow. This is in stark contrast to what’s available over the pond, as Kotaku points out, with over 100 titles hitting European shores from tomorrow — somewhat of an imbalance. But, with Sony said to be targeting a younger crowd, maybe it’s banking on some of them not remembering the PlayStation’s golden age. Feature tour video after the break.

LG’s Game World landing on its own Smart TVs

LG has just announced Game World, a new Smart TV portal that’s only available to Cinema 3D Smart TV owners. The service will let users snap up downloadable games in categories such as action, RPG or arcade, then play them in 2D or 3D with the company’s Magic Remote or other third-party controller. The service is not to be confused with LG’s Gaikai cloud gaming service, and the company said most of the titles will be family-friendly. Mind you, that looks like Shadowgun on the main page above, so there’s clearly some grown-up only entertainment, too.

Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3 now working on Linux through Google Chrome, more or less

A Holy Grail of Linux gaming has been an Unreal Engine 3 port. Getting one for the OS would unlock a world of games that has been the province of, well, just about any other mainstream platform. Thanks to Google preserving Flash on Linux through Chrome, that dream is alive in at least a rudimentary form. Experimenters at the Phoronix forums have found that Chrome 21 has support for the Stage 3D hardware acceleration needed to drive Epic Games’ Flash conversion of UE3. Tell Chrome to enable support as well as ignore a graphics chip blacklist, and suddenly you’re running Epic Citadel from your Linux install. When we say “running,” however, we’re taking a slight amount of poetic license. Performance isn’t that hot, and certain configurations might not show the medieval architecture in all its glory. We’ve confirmed with Epic that it works, but it’s still firm on the stance that there’s no plans for official UE3 support on Linux “at this time.” It’s still promising enough that maybe, just maybe, gamers can embrace an open-source platform without having to give up the games they love.

It was almost as inevitable as gravity, really. Rovio has teamed up with NASA to offer a special, Curiosity-themed episode inside Angry Birds Space. The trek has the avians scouring 20 levels of the Martian landscape with a few bonuses thrown in for good measure. Just like your favorite childhood breakfast cereal, there’s even a token healthy ingredient — in this case, a chance for gamers to learn about Curiosity’s exploration whenever they’re not busy smashing pigs. Android and iOS users can dip into the new chapter right after they update, but that’s not even the full extent of Rovio’s plans. If the environs of Gale Crater are too limiting, you’ll be glad to hear that the game developer is teasing a full-scale Red Planet variant for the fall.

Alpha Range iOS game requires a pico projector and laser pointer, we go hands-on (video)

Granted, a magical little smartphone is all the gadgetry most casual gaming fans require to get their fix, but when LaserVR’s Travis Haagen popped by our informal meetup at Portland’s Ground Kontrol to talk about Alpha Range, we couldn’t help but be impressed by the project. The game has a classic Asteroids / Space Invaders feeling to it, but Alpha Range is more than just another bit of mobile nostalgia. For one thing, you’re going to need a lot more than just your phone, including a projector (pico will do fine for your needs) and a tripod. You project the game field onto a the wall (in the case of Ground Kontrol, we taped up a few pieces of paper, which worked fine) and interact with objects using a laser point.

When your iOS device is facing the wall, its camera monitors the field, using computer vision algorithms to detect your laser shots in real time, finally discovering a novel use for laser points that doesn’t involve annoying rock bands or cats. Hitting the circular enemies will cause them to vaporize or perform other functions like opening up a black hole, depending on their color. The game was pretty responsive and incredibly addictive — in fact, we were a bit bummed when we finally had to put the laser point down. Such fun isn’t cheap, however — it’ll run you $8 from iTunes, on top of the price of all the accessories involved it getting it off the ground. Still, it’s nice to see an innovative take like this on a classic gaming scenario.

OnLive details restructure as HTC loses $40m investment

A wave of confusion surrounded OnLive over the weekend, with employees reportedly being let go from the company. Soon after it was announced that OnLive had been acquired by another company, with details now emerging that the company will trade using OnLive’s name, with all assets having been transferred over except shares and staff. Some employees will be hired back, but over half will be left without a job as a result of the transaction.

OnLive services will reportedly continue to work without any issues for users, but those employees who have been left without a job will be offered consulting roles with the company in exchange for options in the new company. When the company secures more funding, it plans to hire back more of its former employees. In a statement, the company says that “asset acquisition, although a heartbreaking transition for everyone involved with OnLive, allows the company’s core innovation and ongoing offerings to survive and continue to evolve.”

Employees aren’t the only ones affected by the changes: HTC estimates that it will lose out on its $40 million investment in the company that it made in February 2011. HTC cites the troubles that OnLive has been facing, saying in a note to investors that the company faced difficulties due to a “lack of operating cash and an inability to raise new capital.” It’s yet another blow for HTC, which has been seeing financial trouble itself in recent months.

The company recently had to pull out of South Korea and Brazil due to lack of sales in both markets, and posted a troubling second quarter financial results. Profits were down 57% compared to the same period in 2011, with HTC posting a net profit of ~$248 million overall. Revenues for July 2012 were also down 45% compared to the same time last year.

Amid the rumors, sourced reports and statements, it was easy to lose track of the facts surrounding OnLive’s recent restructuring efforts. No surprise then, that the newly formed outfit has issued a press release and FAQ (after the break) in hopes will clear things up. First and foremost, the firm reiterates that the streaming game service will continue operating uninterrupted, and that the “newly formed company” that acquired the firm’s assets will continue to do business under the OnLive name. The announcement also mentions the Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors (ABC) process OnLive used to settle its debts, noting that “an affiliate” of Lauder Partners, a technology investment firm, was the new OnLive’s first investor. Finally, the firm laments the necessity of laying off its staff, stating that “neither OnLive, Inc. shares nor OnLive staff could transfer under this type of transaction,” confirming that nearly half of the previous staff had been offered positions at the new company, and optimistically projecting future hires culled from both previous and new employees. The new OnLive calls the asset acquisition “a heartbreaking transition for everyone involved,” but looks optimistically to a future of “transforming the OnLive vision into reality.” Check out OnLive’s full, official word on the matter below.

OnLive reportedly shutting down, new company forming in its wake (update: OnLive says ‘of course not’)

Well, here’s a bit of a shocker. After a strong showing at E3 and partnerships with companies like OUYA, gaming service OnLive is reportedly closing down, with an entire staff layoff resulting. At a glance, this sure feels a lot like the similar rise and fall of InstantAction, which was attempting to pull off something similar with cloud-based gaming. Polygon is reporting the story as relayed to the site by game developer Brian Fargo. We’ve reached out to the company and received a non-comment comment, “We don’t respond to rumors and have no comment.” Our OnLive contact also used the opportunity to plug its Google TV tie-ins and few giveaways — so, for the moment at least, things seem to be moving along as usual.

Update: Joystiq has reached out for comment as well, getting a similar, yet decidedly more blunt response: “We don’t respond to rumors, but of course not.” Blunt response or no, we’re sure this isn’t the last we’ll be hearing about this one.

Update 2: We reached out to OnLive again for clarification on whether the denial pertained to both the shutdown and layoff rumors. The response reads thusly: “I have no comment on the news other than to say the OnLive service is not shutting down. I’m sorry I cannot be more specific.

Update 3: Martyn Williams from IDG has reported there are employees leaving the OnLive offices with moving boxes.

Cologne, city of cathedrals, chocolate museums and — at least for the last week — a little bit of cosplay. While Gamescom largely concentrated on the latest titles coming in the next year, there was still plenty to see for gadget obsessives — especially when it came to PC mice and keyboards. Sony also had a few tricks up its sleeve at its press event before Gamescom had even begun in earnest. After the break, gorge on all the gaming hardware of note, in case you missed it on the first round. Tschüss!
