Fire Emblem: Awakening retail release reportedly delayed

Sad news for those of you who were planning to pick up a copy of Fire Emblem: Awakening today, as it seems that a number of retailers in the US aren’t getting their shipments in until later this week. The game was scheduled to launch today in the US, but Game Informer has spoken to some Best Buy and GameStop stores that say they haven’t received shipments yet. Just the same, it seems Amazon is warning potential purchasers of a possible shipping delay, so many players may not be getting Fire Emblem: Awakening today.

fireemblemawakening

Best Buy told Game Informer that it isn’t likely to receive the game until Wednesday, February 6, while GameStop said its shipments might not come in until Friday, February 8. Of course, it’s impossible to check with all GameStop and Best Buy stores, but the GameStop stores we called up they told us the same thing: no shipments until later this week. One GameStop employee said that the games may arrive by Wednesday, but Friday is probably the safer bet.

All of this, it seems, can be blamed on some kind of shipping error. We aren’t entirely sure what’s preventing these stores from receiving their copies of the game, but the problem is big enough that its retail release is now being pushed back a couple of days in some areas. In any case, there are probably still some stores receiving the game today, so if you’ve been hankering for some Fire Emblem action, call up the game stores around you and see if they’ve got it available.

There’s always the digital release too, with the game available right now through the 3DS eShop. It’s a shame to hear about these delays, as Fire Emblem: Awakening is being lauded as one of the best games on the 3DS. Did any of you manage to secure a copy of Fire Emblem: Awakening today, or are you hearing similar things from the store you pre-ordered it at?

Analyst: Wii U underperformed at GameStop during holiday season

With the holiday shopping rush comes the expectation that console and game sales will enjoy a boost. According to Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia, however, that wasn’t quite the case for the Wii U. Bhatia said in a note today that sales of the Wii U and its games at GameStop have come in under expectations, which is a bit surprising considering that Wii U sales have seemed generally healthy so far.

WiiU

Indeed, the Wii U sold 400,000 units in its first week on the shelves in the US, and while we don’t have any numbers for Europe, we do know that the console managed more than 300,000 sales during its first weekend of availability in Japan. Despite that strong start, Bhatia said that there has been an abundance of Wii Us on shelves at GameStop, which suggests slow sales. Bhatia also said that the attach rate for new console sales was “low,” so players aren’t buying many games when they go to pick up their new Wii U.

That may be easily explained – after all, a number of launch titles for the Wii U were simply ports of older Xbox 360 and PS3 games. Perhaps gamers are waiting for more new titles before deciding to splurge on Wii U games? Bhatia points out that the Wii U Deluxe bundles are selling better than basic models, which is hardly surprising considering the Deluxe bundle offers a 32GB hard drive to the basic set’s 8GB of storage.

The Deluxe bundle also bestows a pack-in copy of Nintendo Land upon consumers, so it’s pretty easy to see why customers are opting for that edition over the basic set. If this is true, it’s rather disappointing news, but remember that the Wii U is still very young. 2013 will be a big year for the new console, so we’ll be getting a better idea of how it’s performing as we slowly make our way toward 2014. Stay tuned.

5-year-old’s Nintendo 3DS Christmas gift filled with porn

Five-year-old Braydon Giles received a refurbished Nintendo 3DS for Christmas, which his father, Mark, purchased from GameStop. Unfortunately for all involved, the device wasn’t properly wiped of its previous owner’s content, which included porn. As such, Braydon discovered the images while playing with the device and asked his brother for help in getting rid of them.

His brother Bryton quickly recognized the images for what they were and took the device to their father, telling him that it contained porn. Mark, upon learning this, immediately called GameStop, and, we’re guessing, gave them an earful. He said in a 9 News interview, “You can’t un-see this. He’s five years old. Maybe when he’s 18 or 20 maybe he won’t know anything about it but he’s not going to forget about it tomorrow.”

As a result, GameStop sent the family a new Nintendo 3DS, as well as a handful of games. It then issued a statement that is is looking into the situation. “We have a rigorous quality control process in place to ensure that existing content is removed from all devices before they are re-sold. Out of millions of transactions each year, ones like this happen very rarely.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time devices have been sold with porn on-board. Back in October, for example, a girl discovered porn on her refurbished cell phone, an issue for which RadioShack, which sold it, was sued. The moral of the story? When giving your child a refurbished gadget, it might be a good idea to scan through the device first to make sure everything is kosher.

GameStop now stocking Kindle Fire tablets, handing out free virtual bucks with purchase

The Kindle Fire line of tablets is the latest set of electronics to grace GameStop store shelves in the US, the Texas company announced recently. From the baby 7-inch all the way to the larger 8.9-inch, the entire Fire line will be carried in all of GameStop’s 4,400 US-based locations after a successful test run earlier this year with various Android-based tablets — presumably it won’t be too long before discounted, used versions of the tablets become widely available, as GameStop’s offering a $100 in-store credit trade incentive toward the original Kindle Fire. Sadly, you’ll only snag the free $25 Amazon.com gift card (offered through the end of January) if you purchase a brand new Fire, but then there’s always that $50 off sale going on today, right?

Welcome to Friday evening everyone – the weekend is beginning for most of us, but before we dive in, let’s recap the news from the day. Late this afternoon, we found out that Gameloft’s full line up of games for 2013 had leaked, which is exciting to say the least. Unfortunately, all is not well in the gaming world, as BioShock Infinite has been pushed back yet again. This time it’s been delayed into March, which means the wait for it has gotten longer by a month. We learned today that Best Buy will have to pay out $27 million to TechFoward for stolen trade secrets, which is not good for a company that has been struggling lately.

The PlayStation Store silently launched on the web today, so you can do your PlayStation-related shopping from your computer from now on. The HTC One VX budget handset hit AT&T today, while Apple CEO Tim Cook was talking about the competition and sharing his feelings on the anti-Apple Samsung ads. The very cool Samsung Galaxy Camera has been announced for Verizon, while the Samsung Muse music player is has arrived in the US.

GameStop is now selling Kindle Fire tablets and offering free $25 Amazon gift cards to anyone who picks one up, and we learned that T-Mobile is currently testing a new pre-paid mobile brand. Google announced today that it’s replacing its Mergers and Acquisitions chief, while we heard that hackable hotel room door locks will be getting replaced by the manufacturer. A meteor gave some Texas residents quite the show today, and a new 268-megapixel camera has snapped the first shot of the distant Carina Nebula. Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition has launched on the iPad, so be sure to check it out if you don’t mind watching a few hundred hours of your life slip away.

As is usually the case, we have a number of original articles for you to check out tonight. Chris Burns goes hands-on with the Verizon Galaxy Note II and delivers his review of the Men In Black 3 Movie Touch app. Craig Lloyd tells us what he thought of the HTC One X+ in his review, while Don Reisinger tells us why Nintendo needs to launch a new console in 2014. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, we hope you enjoy your weekend everyone!

GameStop now selling Kindle Fire tablets, $25 Amazon gift card with purchase

Video game retailer GameStop is now selling select Kindle Fire tablets in stores across the US, just in time for the holiday season. They’re offering the Kindle Fire HD 7-inch tablet for $199.99 at all 4,400 stores, and the non-HD 7-inch version and the 8.9-inch HD for $159.99 and $299.99, respectively, “at select stores.”

However, if you’re still thinking about ordering one off of Amazon instead of driving to your local GameStop, the brick-and-mortar store will give you a $25 Amazon gift card if you buy a Kindle Fire tablet from them, which would essentially bring the price of the non-HD 7-inch Kindle Fire down to just a measly $135.

The deal will only last until January 31, so be sure not to putz around if you’re thinking about grabbing a Kindle Fire tablet anytime soon. If you already happen to have an original Kindle Fire and aren’t getting much use out of it, GameStop will also buy it from you and give you in-store credit for up to $100. You might be able to get a bit more cash out of it on Craigslist or eBay, but this is a great way if you need cash quickly.

GameStop has been growing its business for selling non-gaming devices for a while now. Last year, they started a pilot program to sell tablets in 200 stores, and expanded the program to over 1,600 locations later in May 2012. Back in March, GameStop also began selling refurbished iOS devices.

GameStop begins selling Kindle Fire at retail stores

If you’ve been looking to purchase a Kindle Fire this holiday season, but don’t want to be troubled with shopping for it online or at a large retailer like Best Buy or Target, you’ll now have another option of where you can pick one up as GameStop announced it will be selling the Kindle Fire in stores.

The 7-inch Kindle Fire HD will be available at $199.99 at all of GameStop’s retail stores, while the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD and the Kindle Fire will be on sale in select stores, which you can find out by visiting their website.

This doesn’t mark the first time GameStop has offered Android tablets in its retail stores as it has a wide selection of tablets like the Nexus 7, the Asus Transformer Prime, and, of course, the iPad.

In addition to today’s news, GameStop will give customers a $25 Amazon.com gift card for any Kindle Fire purchase from now until January 31st, 2013. Kindle Fire owners who are looking to upgrade their devices to a new one will receive $100 in-store credit to GameStop.

If you have someone on your “nice” list who not only has been wanting some video games under their tree, but also an Android tablet, then today’s news is something you’ve been waiting for as you can now kill two birds with one stone at GameStop.

Kongregate breaks free of the browser, serves up downloadable games

Kongregate has stepped out of its web browser boundaries by offering free-to-play downloadable desktop games alongside its existing catalog of browser-based titles. Only Super Monday Night Combat, Smashmuck Champions and Bomb Buddies are available for desktop play, but the outfit is set to beef up its selection in the following weeks. It’s not likely that this development will cause Steam to nervously eye its rearview mirror for a competitor on its coattails, but it’s interesting to see GameStop’s F2P game venture ever so slightly dip its toes into Valve’s territory. However, Gabe Newell’s platform may yet have some fiercer competition in the brick-and-mortar retailer’s Impulse storefront. Ready to stock up on the gratis Windows games? Wii U software pre-orders top 1.2 million at GameStop

This weekend will be a big one for Nintendo, as it just so happens to be the weekend that the Wii U launches in the US. It’s a good time to be a Nintendo fan, and it looks like gamers are plenty excited for the arrival of the new console. GameStop said today that software pre-orders have hit 1.2 million units, which certainly isn’t anything to scoff at.

It’s also twice the number of pre-orders GameStop received for Wii software prior to that console’s launch. It would appear that a lot of gamers think the Wii U is worth the investment – with GameStop getting 500,000 consoles in for launch, Gamasutra reports that’s an attach rate of 2.4 games per console. That definitely isn’t bad, though we’re sure Nintendo would like to see more.

GameStop blew through those 500,000 consoles too, reporting shortly after pre-orders opened that it was out of consoles to sell. That’s a great sign for Nintendo, especially when so many people seem to think that the Wii U is destined for failure. Of course, it’s far too early to call that one, but if these numbers are any indication, then the Wii U shouldn’t do too bad. At the very least, the Wii U should do pretty well during the holiday shopping season.

GameStop says that pre-orders for games like ZombiU, New Super Mario Bros. U, Black Ops II, and Assassin’s Creed III were leading the pack. One thing worth pointing out is that only one of those four games is a first party Nintendo title, so this particular console seems to be reaping the benefits of solid third party support. Considering that Nintendo consoles of the past were notorious for their lack of good third party software, we’d say that’s a big win for Nintendo. Are you getting a Wii U when it launches on Sunday?

Call of Duty: Black Ops II GameStop sales reach 1 million on first day

GameStop, one of the largest game retailers in the US, has reported its sales for Call of Duty: Black Ops II. The company has sold one million copies of the game within the first 24 hours of its launch. GameStop says that Black Ops II is already shaping up to be the retailers best selling game of all time.

The new Call of Duty title went on sale at midnight on Tuesday morning, and it was reported that GameStop locations all over the country were seeing long lines hours before the launch. According to a statement made by Activision, Black Ops II “shattered pre-order records” that were set last year by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

According to Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson, retailers may sell between 6.5 million and 7.2 million copies in the US and UK in the first 24 hours, and the first 24 hours of sales for a new video game typically equate to 25% to 35% of the total sales through December, according to Olson. Amazon tweeted a couple days ago that Black Ops II has become the online retailer’s most pre-ordered game ever.

Last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sales hit 6.5 million units in the US and UK in the first 24 hours of release, which equated to a cool $400 million in just a single day. The game went on to earn $775 million in five days. How well will Black Ops II sell? Most likely even better than Modern Warfare 3.
