Origin’s Eon15 gaming laptop offers less bang, saves more buck

While some high-profile custom PC vendors are on their way out, Origin PC is just getting started. The company recently launched the Genesis, a desktop that melts gamers’ faces at the same time it incinerates their wallets, and the Eon18, a laptop that… honestly does just the same. Come to think of it, flame seems to be a recurring theme for the company, but before you work yourself into a burning hot rage because of your inability to afford Origin product, consider the new Eon15. With only room for a single powerful mobile graphics chip and a single storage drive, it won’t be setting new 3DMark or I/O benchmarks like its cousins, but it will let you get away with a 1080p screen, Core i7-820QM processor, up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, a GeForce GTX 285M and even a snazzy paint job for a merely painful, rather than excruciating, price. Configurations start at $1,900 — hey, it’s not like you were gonna be using those paychecks for anything else, right?

MSI announces GE700 gaming laptop for those who like to be entertained

MSI announces GE700 gaming and entertainment laptop for those who like gaming and entertainment

You can’t go more than a few days without MSI dropping another new laptop, and today’s is the GE700. It’s not only 100 more than the GE600 from a few weeks ago, but a little bit bigger, sporting a 17.3-inch LCD with an unspecified resolution, up to a nine cell battery, and room for dual hard disks of up to 500GB apiece. Graphics are again handled by an ATI Radeon HD5730, processing again done by an Intel Core i5 chip, and there’s a 720p webcam for live-streaming your every blemish. No word on price for this 3.2kg (7lb) machine, but MSI doesn’t tend to waste much time in getting these things to retail.

Alienware M11x gets torn down, earthly components found inside

Having filled our business laptop lust with a T410 undressing yesterday, today we’ve come across a comprehensive teardown of Alienware’s gamer-friendly M11x ultraportable. Touted as the world’s most powerful 11-inch notebook, this is certainly one of the most tightly packed, with the battery and CPU cooling solution taking up more than half of the real estate, while the hard drive, memory, and wireless modules leave just enough room for an asymmetric speaker arrangement. From this strategic view, the examination moves into a very finely detailed investigation of the onboard components, including the particulars of the heatpipe-equipped heatsink, the SU7300 CULV processor, and the GT 335M GPU from NVIDIA. The whole thing culminates with the weighing of all the important parts, leaving us with pretty much no mysteries about this decidedly manmade machine.

Maingear mX-L 15 multimedia laptop available now

It looks like Maingear’s mXl-15, the long-awaited little brother to the eXl-15 gaming laptop has finally entered the building. This 15.6-inch laptop packs an Intel Core i5 or i7 CPU, ATI Radeon Mobility 4570 512MB graphics, an LED backlit display (your choice of 1355 x 768 or 1600 x 900), up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, eSATA connection, and your choice of HDD or SSD storage, and a multitouch touchpad. Truth be told, the base price of $1,000 is rather fetching — although “base price” has a way of fading into the distance as you start adding options. Ready to take the leap? iBuyPower Battalion Touch laptop lid draws blood, prompts replacement

Sure, you might expect your laptop to overheat or explode at any moment — but cut you with a seemingly harmless logo? That’s the strange but true case of iBuyPower’s Battalion Touch CZ-10, at least, which left one Laptop Magazine reviewer with a nasty gash (that may or may not have required Band-Aid attention) after he decided to inspect a sliver of the “W” that appeared to be peeling off. For its part, iBuyPower says that it has since stopped using the aluminum logo in favor of a plate-style label with rounded edges, and that less than 1% of shipped systems used the troublesome logo. Anyone stuck with one of those is advised to contact iBuyPower for a replacement before it’s too late.

MSI announces GT660 gaming laptop ahead of CeBIT

We’ve already heard about some of the systems MSI has in store for CeBIT — including a 3D-capable Wind Top — but it looks like the company still has bit more lined up, including this new GT660 gaming laptop. In addition to the requisite red accents to make it go faster, this one packs a quad-core Core i7 processor, along with GeForce GTX 285M and, just as notably, some USB 3.0 ports to ensure your peripherals are just as speedy. Still no word on a price or other specifics, but MSI is promising to say more about this and the rest of its new systems at CeBIT next week.

Alienware M11x review

We’ve been itching to get our hands on the Alienware M11x ever since we first saw it at CES — it’s one of the most interesting riffs on the thin-and-light we’ve seen in a long time. Sure, it’s compact, but inside it’s got a ULV Core 2 Duo paired with a switchable NVIDIA GT335M GPU, making it one of the most powerful small laptops on the market. But power never comes cheap: the M11x starts at $799, and our tester model equipped with an upgraded 1.3GHz SU7300 Core 2 Duo and 4GB of RAM clocks in at $949. That’s pricey, but potentially worth it if you’re a serious gamer on the go. You know we had to test one and find out — let’s see if the M11x can back up those looks with performance.

Special thanks to our new favorite reader Joe Kelly, who loaned us his M11x for this review!

MSI Launches GE600 laptop for gamers who need ‘low-keyed luxury and nobleness’

MSI Launches GE600 laptop for gamers who need 'low-keyed luxury and nobleness'We try not to single out auto-translated press releases that have funny phrases in them, but when your English missive promises a laptop with “low-keyed luxury and nobleness,” well, it’s hard to ignore. That’s what’s on the docket with MSI’s GE600, a gaming and general entertainment machine that’s been given a (rather subtle) golden hue for the luxe crowd. More importantly it features a discrete ATI Radeon HD5730 video card with 1GB of memory and DirectX 11 compatibility, Intel Core i5 processors, up to 500GB of storage, and a 720p-capable webcam. At 2.7kg (5.95lbs) it’s not the lightest machine, but few DX11-compatible notes are exactly svelte these days. No word on price or availability, but we’re going to go ahead and guess it’ll cost less than other golden portable offerings.

How would you change HP’s Envy 13 / 15 laptops?

It’s still sort of weird to see an Envy laptop and not see a Voodoo badge following along, but as Rahul Sood has so eloquently explained, it’s HP’s burden to bear from here on out. We got a chance to toy around with the smaller of the two a few months ago, and since then, the company lowered the asking prices for both while simultaneously updating the specifications. For those who’ve managed to procure either of the editions, we’re curious to hear what you think about HP’s first Voodoo-free Envy laptops. Is the trackpad up to snuff? How’s the display? Is the performance satisfactory given the price? Can you use it without torching your lap? Spill your innermost thoughts in comments below — you know we won’t judge you.
