Functional Trash Compactor Replica: Proto Wall-E

Most of the replicas I’ve seen are of robots, vehicles and weapons. The inspiration behind Darius Bode’s creations is a lot humbler than that. But it’s one that is quite intriguing when you see it in action: a trash compactor. To be more specific, Bode made a working replica of the Schörling 2R rearloader.

In his making-of article (pdf), Bode confesses that he’s been fascinated by the compactor since he was a kid: “I think there is some kind of magic about this packer because it moves so stolidly (sic) and calm no matter what you throw in there.” He started with cardboard models of the compactor, but in 2009 he finally decided to make one that works just like the original. He ended up making a 1:11 scale replica using aluminum and steel. It takes its time, but the tiny compactor actually works. The video below shows it taking on some aluminum cans.

Aaaand we just spent a few minutes looking at a miniature trash compactor crush some cans which we could have just as easily crushed with our hands (or heads.) Thanks Internet! There’s more where that came from. Check out Bode’s YouTube channel for additional videos of the replica.

Concept City Sweeper Can Haul Garbage, Sweep Streets And Plow Snow

Considering how much pollution we amass on a daily basis with our vehicles alone, you would think having a separate truck to sweep our streets, plow snow and haul away our tons of garbage seems pretty archaic. That’s why designer’s Michał Markiewicz seems like an extremely logical solution to the insane amount of trucks which are currently specific to the jobs mentioned.

Markiewicz’s Multifunctional City Sweeper is one truck that is able to perform the duties of three separate trucks as it’s able to be a street sweeper, garbage truck and snow plower all at once. Considering both street sweepers and snow plowers just sit in a garage until their respective season comes, the Multifunctional City Sweeper could be used all year round as it could sweep in the morning, haul away your garbage in the afternoon and plow snow when needed. Everything’s multi-functional these days, so why not extend that concept to vehicles? More specifically, to street-cleaning trucks? I’m sure you’ve seen sweepers at work on your street, but they’re kind of wasteful, if you think about it. For one, they’re just parked in the garage when winter comes along. You won’t be sweeping up the streets the whole day either.

Designer Michał Markiewicz took all this into consideration and eventually came up with the Multifunctional City Sweeper concept.

City Sweeper

He basically combined the three functions I mentioned above to make this the city sweeper truck that’s fit for all occasions and multiple uses. It’s a sweeper truck in the morning, a garbage truck in the afternoon, and a snow plow during winter. It’s basically got everything covered – and all in one truck.

Save on gas, save on space, save on government resources, and save the environment. Pretty cool, huh?
