Samsung Gear Fit Initial Stock Reportedly Sold Out

Samsung Gear Fit Initial Stock Reportedly Sold Out

Samsung announced a trio of wearable devices alongside the Galaxy S5 at Mobile World Congress 2014. Apart from the two new Gear smartwatches Samsung also launched the Gear Fit activity tracker. However this wearable device does much more, it’s essentially a smartwatch-cum-activity tracker. Its certainly an attractive device and the Gear Fit appears to be doing very well for itself if reports are accurate. Apparently the initial 250,000 unit stock has been sold out.

MK, a Korean publication, claims that out of the 250,000 units that were sold in just ten days, 25,000 units were sold in South Korea alone. Samsung is now said to have increased production of this wearable device which has apparently put pressure on Samsung Display and Samsung SDI, the two sole suppliers for the Gear Fit.

With a $199 price tag, Gear Fit touts a 1.84-inch curved Super AMOLED display with 432×128 pixel resolution. Its powered by Samsung’s homegrown Real Time OS. The battery, developed by Samsung SDI, can last for three to five days on a single charge, making the Gear Fit a much more attractive choice as opposed to conventional smartwatches which don’t offer similar battery life. Samsung’s new activity tracker is compatible with 20 existing smartphones and tablets.

The Gear Fit went on sale on April 11, alongside the two new smartwatches and the Galaxy S5.

Samsung Gear 2 And Gear Fit Reportedly Expensive To Repair

Samsung Gear 2 And Gear Fit Reportedly Expensive To RepairWhile the Samsung Gear 2 and the Gear Fit aren’t exactly cheap devices, it seems that if for whatever reason they get spoilt and you’re not covered by warranty, there’s a good chance that you’d be better off buying a new device rather than repairing the old one. This is according to a report from ZDNet Korea which revealed that broken Gear 2 or Gear Fit devices will have to be sent in for a full repair.

This is compared to a smartphone where you might be able to find components that are replaceable or it’s as easy as replacing the screen. Granted those repairs aren’t that cheap but they are generally cheaper than buying a new device. There is also apparently a fee that users will have to pay when they send the device in for repair which is around $240 for the Gear 2, and $170 for the Gear Fit.

Given that a brand new Gear 2 or Gear Fit isn’t that much more expensive, it has been suggested that maybe users will be better off getting new devices after all. The reason behind this seemingly cumbersome and expensive repair process is because the replacement components aren’t as readily available, not to mention when iFixit tore down the device, they found it pretty hard to repair as well.

One of the reasons is because the components have been soldered onto the main board and the fact that the the display has been glued to the body of the watch, so if you were to remove it, there is a high chance that you might damage the display in the process. However we don’t expect that either device will break just by looking at it, but it should be noted that if it were to be spoilt, you can look forward to a hefty repair bill.

Gear Fit Compatible With Non-Samsung Devices

Gear Fit Compatible With Non Samsung Devices

Samsung made waves in the wearable market this year by launching two new smartwatches and an activity tracker. Last year the company jumped on this bandwagon by launching the Galaxy Gear smartwatch alongside Galaxy Note 3. The new Gear smartwatches are a bit different, they don’t run on Android, but Samsung didn’t address one of the most criticized aspects of its wearables, the fact that they don’t officially support non-Samsung devices. Though it turns out that the Gear Fit activity tracker is actually compatible with the likes of HTC One M8, Nexus 5 and more.

Samsung Enables Vertical Display Orientation In Gear Fit

Samsung Enables Vertical Display Orientation In Gear Fit

Back in February, at the Mobile World Congress 2014, Samsung unveiled a trio of wearable devices. Apart from two smartwatches, the company also launched an activity tracker called Gear Fit. Apart from the fact that it also tells the time, the Gear Fit’s simple yet stunning AMOLED display gives users access to a wide variety of fitness related information. There was one caveat though that bugged people who played around with the tracker. The display would only be displayed horizontally regardless of where the tracker was on the wrist. It looks like Samsung has removed this limitation.

We have heard multiple reports that through a software update, the Gear Fit’s display gets vertical orientation as well. This should help make prolonged usage of the tracker more convenient. It is not known when Samsung intends to roll out this software update, though Gear Fit units with vertical orientation have already been seen in Samsung’s official stores at home in Korea.

Samsung’s new wearable devices will be released alongside the Galaxy S5 come April 11th. Presumably soon after the company may release this software update, which is immediately going to eliminate the pain for all customers who received their brand new activity trackers from Samsung next week.
