Gibbles: Don’t Feed Them After Midnight

If you are looking for some cute and cuddly, but possibly still scary monsters for you are your kids to play with, check out these Gibbles. They have messy fur, ugly faces that only an owner like you could love, and those eyes that peer into your soul.

They do look pretty darn huggable. They are described as “a very nervous and jumpy breed of monster. Any slight noise or sudden movement sends them into a fit of screams, which is why their face always looks like that.” Makes sense to me.

Your kid will either love them or be scared to death. You can scare up some Gibbles from Love & a Sandwich for $40(USD) each.

Shih-tzu Ewok won’t Crush Your Head with Giant Logs, but May Leave Them on the Floor

Of all the characters in the original Star Wars trilogy, the Ewoks were my favorites. At the time, I didn’t realize how much they looked like dogs that walked around on their hind legs. if you need any more proof that the Ewok race is descendant from the mighty and fluffy Shih-tzu dog breed, here it is.

Somewhere in a city far, far away a geek has poked the head of his or her cute little shih-tzu through the side of a cardboard box with the body of an Ewok drawn on it. Epic dog photo taking ensued.

It’s almost worth buying a shih-tzu just so I can recreate this photo. It just wouldn’t be the same with my daughter’s Chihuahua poking her boney little head through the box. I sincerely hope this dog’s name is Wicket.

Guy Walks on Ceiling with Homemade Magneto Boots, Laughs Maniacally

Check out this video of Colin Furze (the maniac who gave us those cool Wolverine claws) walking on the ceiling using his newly-completed, homemade Magneto boots. I question his sanity after seeing him laughing hysterically over the feat. Magneto never got that excited. This is proof that you respect a super power more if you have to earn it, rather than being born with it.

He did have the good sense to try it on a low ceiling though. That’s several small steps on the ceiling for man, one giant leap for nerdkind who have spare electromagnets at home.

Here’s some behind-the-scenes videos of how Colin made the boots and how he learned to walk in them:

Not to be mean or anything, but it would have been funny if he got stuck and had to hang there until help arrived.

X-Mans Art Show: Children of the Coloring Book

10 years ago, pop artist Brandon Bird found an X-Men coloring & activity book filled with awful sketches at a dollar store. Brandon eventually decided to turn it into a collaborative work with his fellow artist friends. But instead of simply coloring its pages, they each picked a sketch in the book and made original art based on it.

Brandon presented the artworks under the appropriate name X-Mans earlier this month at the Nucleus gallery in L.A. Here are some of the pieces:

As you can see, most of the pieces are lighthearted – Nate Carle’s Fourclops looks like it actually came from the sketchbook – but a couple of them made the best out of the source material, such as Amy Dixon’s Grey’s Anatomy and Erin Pearce’s Magneto Hates Birthdays.  Have your browser wear Cerebro and head to Brandon’s website to see all of X-Mans. Brandon is also selling prints of some of the pieces on his online shop.

Princess Leia Falls for Indiana Jones

I always get a kick out of mashups of films that I loved as a kid. I really like this new work from artist James Hance. He has taken Princess Leia complete with her giant hair buns and put her in a picture with Indiana Jones.

It is cool to see the wrong character put with his love interest from the Star Wars movies. The art is said to be a work in progress, but it already looks complete to me. In fact, it looks realistic enough to have been some sort of mistake at a movie poster printing factory.

Hance is the same guy who melded Adventure Time with Doctor Who in the past.

Build Your Own BMO from Adventure Time: BYO BMO

Adventure Time fans are for the most part, very creative people. That’s probably why they love the show, because it is so creative and unique. Fans of the show create all kinds of cool art and toys. Now a very creative Adventure Time fan who goes by the name of Bob H built this BMO.

It looks pretty amazing huh? He can change it’s facial expressions and BMO even sings. BMO also plays the intro to the cartoon. Now I want one. It’s like BMO jumped out of the cartoon and is living in your treehouse now. If you want to build one for yourself, you can learn how.

Best BMO creation ever!

Bean Bag Iron Throne: A Song of Beads and Foam

The Iron Throne in Westeros is not supposed to be comfortable. Those swords that jab you when you sit in it keep you alert, therefore alive for another day. But who wants to poked and prodded by their own throne? Well, now you can have your very own Iron Throne and sit in comfort.

Nerd by Night has turned the Iron Throne into an epic bean bag chair. If you want one like it, you’ll have to make this throne yourself, but that beats going to war and having to pay the iron price, right? To make one, you won’t need any valerian steel, but you’ll need to cut and paint fabric, sew it into place, and stuff it with foam and bean bag beans. When you are finished, you will have a comfortable throne.

A comfortable throne that still looks badass.

Man at Arms Makes Jake’s Sword from Adventure Time

I’m not sure why a shape-shifting dog even needs a sword, but that’s Adventure Time for you. It doesn’t have to make sense to be an amazing cartoon. As you might expect, this sword is totally mathematical! It was made by none other than our favorite blacksmith, Tony “Man at Arms” Swatton.

The swords in Adventure Time all have their quirks. Jake’s weapon is no exception. Look how long that hilt is. You could never use this sword in real life. That didn’t stop master swordsmith Tony Swatton from making it real. Watch as he first makes Jake’s sword, then uses it to destroy stuff.

It really is beautiful and it looks like it came right out of the cartoon. As usual, Great work, Tony!

DIY Plush USB Game Controller: Hug and Play

We’ve seen all kinds of game controller plushies, but I think this is the first time I’ve seen one that can actually be used to play video games. Adafruit’s Becky Stern built the soft controller using their Flora Arduino-compatible platform and some conductive thread and fabric.

plush usb game controller by adafruit 620x410magnify

Even though Becky’s design looks like a squishy, oversize NES controller, your computer will recognize the plushie as a USB keyboard, so you can use it with any keyboard-based game. If you’re handy with stitching, perhaps you can modify Becky’s guide and make a plushie of your favorite controller. It would probably take a long time to build a full keyboard plushie though.

Make a plush browser and head to Adafruit for the full guide and parts list.

Own Your Very Own Time Machine!

This amazing contraption you see here is a time machine. Before you get too excited, you should know that it doesn’t actually work, but that doesn’t make the feat any less awesome. That’s because it’s actually an incredibly detailed scale model of a fictitious time machine, created by a professional film and TV model maker.

time machine 1 620x465magnify

This one-of-a-kind model took Steve Howarth over 1500 hours during a two year period to build, and it looks amazing. It’s made from perspex and styrene, and set onto a formica MDF base. The thing is loaded up with tiny LEDs to illuminate the scene, and even has sound effects and speakers built in.

time machine 2 620x465magnify

time machine 3 620x465magnify

The model is currently for sale over on Etsy, with an asking price just north of $17,000(USD).While that may sound like a lot, I think the guy who built this deserves more than $11 an hour for his time and materials. Plus, the lucky buyer will get film rights for a story which goes along with the time machine.
