LEGO Stephen Hawking Kit: A Small Replica of Man

Here’s something you don’t see every day: a tiny LEGO sculpture of the world famous physicist and author Stephen Hawking, complete with his wheelchair and computer. I bet there’s a Higgs boson in there too, we just can’t detect it.

Its creator, The Living Brick, calls the replica The Standard Model, after the particle physics theory of the same name. I may not have understood what I just said, but The Living Brick made sure that even I can assemble Dr. Hawking, because he included a booklet of instructions with each kit. Actually no I’m pretty sure I’ll end up losing half of the pieces.

You can order the kit from Amazon for just $40 (USD). Got LEGO? Head to Eurobricks and there you’ll find the building blocks of Dr. Hawking.

This Chair Will Self-Destruct After Eight Uses

Have you ever sat on a chair that seemingly looked sturdy, but eventually gave way under your butt? I have, and let me tell you, while it sounds funny, it’s extremely painful (and embarrassing!) Unfortunately, we only have the chair to blame… or don’t we?

drm self destruct chair

I would say that would be true in most cases, except for the DRM chair. It doesn’t look particularly special – in fact, it looks pretty plain and poorly made, even. But what makes it different is the fact that it self-destructs after eight ‘sits’ or eight uses, whatever you want to call it. It’s fitted with a small sensor that keeps track of how many times it has been sat on. When the counter hits zero, the chair’s structural joints melt down and it essentially falls apart. Watch it in action in the video below:

The chair was made by a group of ECAL students for the worldwide art and engineering competition The Deconstruction.

The C3POscar Actually Exists: And the Jedi Academy Award Goes to…

When I first saw this illustration made by Rodrigo Ferreira I wondered why no one ever thought of it before. It turns out someone at LucasFilm did put two and two together, because the company actually gives away C3POscar trophies. How awesome is that Rodrigo?

Filmmaker Brad Bird – the man who helmed The Iron Giant and The Incredibles, among other things – tweeted the above picture on Mar 1, 2013. This is one droid that LucasFilm employees are looking for; Bird said that the C3POscar is only given to those who have served the company for 20 years. The one in Bird’s picture belongs to a LucasFilm veteran named Paul Matwiy.

Guy Builds the Greatest Video Game Weapon Arsenal Ever

This game room tells you many things at a glance. This gamer clearly loves Halo. He is rocking an Xbox 360. His game collection is neat and orderly. There are a bunch of game weapons on the wall. And he is almost certainly single. I don’t know any wife or girlfriend who would allow such an awesome room.

Prop builder Andrew Cook created an arsenal of replicas of guns and swords from Halo and Mass Effect to decorate his game room with. Clearly, Andrew takes his gaming very seriously. It would be kind of intimidating entering this room to play with him.

The weapons are made primarily from lightweight EPS styrofoam, and no, Andrew won’t sell them to you. But if you want to see how he builds them, you can check out some videos of how the guns were made here. Check out the massive Halo 4 Forerunner Binary Rifle here:

Impressive work, Andrew!

Walking Dead Michonne and Pets Drinking Glasses: Let’s Drink to the Zombie Apocalypse

When you’ve been fighting off hundreds of zombies, the Governor, and his flunkies all day long, you can build up a wicked thirst. What better way to quench what ails you than with these drinking glasses, etched with images of Michonne and her two zombie pets.

michonne pets drinking glasses

Made by Etsy seller Zombie Gifts and Stuff – who sells, well, zombie gifts and stuff – these 18 oz. glasses have a cool, smoky finish to them, with an image of Michonne on one, and her two armless companions on the others. Of course, since they’re just silhouettes you can’t tell that she’s broken their jaws off. But trust us, these zombies won’t try to bite you, and will only serve to help you sneak through the horde unnoticed.

The full set of three glasses will set you back just $20.99(USD) over on Etsy. Just don’t get any funny ideas and start swiping at the pets with a katana – unless you want a bunch of broken glass on your hands.

TARDIS Cube: Doctor Rubik

Over the years, I’ve seen my fair share of unusual Rubik’s Cubes, as well as plenty of TARDIS goodies. But I can honestly say this is the first time I’ve seen a TARDIS Rubik’s Cube.

tardis rubiks cube 1

Ok, it’s not official Rubik’s-branded merch, nor is it a cube, but it’s still a TARDIS and it is a puzzle game. At the end of the day, it’s not even a very complicated puzzle, with a grid of just 2 x 2 x 4 blocks. Though when you start moving all of the pieces around, it does seem to get bigger on the inside, so it’s got that going for it.

This Tardis Cube was designed by Shapeways contributor Gus, and is available as a 3D printed model for about $51 (USD). Though it doesn’t come in color – you have to order it in white and then dye it and apply some labels yourself. Maybe someday Gus will design a full-color version, now that 3D printing tech is fully capable of doing that. On the other hand, you could use this model to make your own TARDIS in any color you’d like. How about a golden TARDIS? Or a hot pink one? You could even decorate the cubes in the colors of a traditional Rubik’s Cube.

3Doodler Racks up over $2 Million

You might remember last month when we talked a bit about the 3Doodler pen. This is a device that reminds me of a combination of a 3D printer and a hot glue gun. The 3Doodler uses strips of plastic to allow the user to build 3D objects only limited by their imagination.

3doodler worlds first 3d printing pen by wobbleworks

The project got off to a thunderous start blowing out its Kickstarter goal of $30,000 in only a few hours. The first time we wrote about the product, it had raised about $600,000. Now with only a few weeks passed the project has over 23,000 backers and has raised over $2,060,000.

The most impressive part is that the project still has 19 days to go. The project is set to fund on March 25 and sadly, if you didn’t get in early, you are probably looking at about a year from now before you get your hands on the 3Doodler. This is one of the coolest products I’ve ever seen turn up on Kickstarter, so it could be worth the wait.

The First and Last Tribble to Ever Join Starfleet

Starfleet is open to almost all lifeforms who are capable of completing the academy’s courses – apparently even Tribbles. This is the only Tribble to ever join Starfleet and there are many good reasons for that. Becoming an officer is filled with trials and tribb-u-lations. You see what I did there?

tribble
First, the way Tribbles multiply, if you get one Tribble officer on a ship and sail from port, you will come back with thousands. Then there’s the whole stepping on them thing. That’s why they don’t often join Starfleet. The only one that ever did got sent on an away mission was immediately eaten by a giant cat and then coughed back up.

This guy was made by Michal Wright-Ward and was a contribution to a Star Trek-themed art show at QPOP in Los Angeles. You can see some of the other contributions to the show here, but this is the funniest, in my opinion.

The Executive Keyboard Belongs in The Hudsucker Proxy

I’ve always thought that the computer keyboards you can buy at most stores are pretty dull. I’m really surprised that there aren’t more really custom keyboards available given the fact that each person really has their own style. Me, I’ve always been a fan of the Art Deco styles of the 1920s through 1940s, so this keyboard is perfect for me.

executive keyboard 1

The Executive Keyboard was custom made by Richard “Datamancer” Nagy, and it is quite a lovely build. It’s got a sleek black and silver theme, along with round keys reminiscent of mechanical typewriters from days gone by. Though these keys are made with modern day mechanical switches, rated for millions of presses each.

No detail was spared in the construction of this keyboard, from the black leatherette background behind the keys to the perfectly retro-styled typeface on the keys themselves.

Of course, all of these good looks and elegant craftsmanship come at a price – the Executive Keyboard sells for $750(USD) – making it truly for executive geeks only.

Star Wars Nesting Dolls: May the Force Be with You. And You. And You. and You. And You.

These are the dolls you’re looking for. Graphic designer, illustrator and disciple of the Russian side of the Force Andy Stattmiller made nesting dolls of the characters in Star Wars IV: A New Hope. Just the main ones though. Otherwise some of the dolls would be insanely small.

Andy made the dolls out of wood and acrylic paint. The dolls are separated into two groups of seven dolls each: the good guys and the bad guys. The largest dolls are 8″ tall while the smallest ones are just 0.75″.
