Pac Seat is the Best Seat in the House, Unless You’re a Ghost

This Pac-Man chair named the Pac Seat would look perfect in my living room. I’m a sucker for retro Pac-Man stuff. This seat, designed by Bruno Marques is great. I love the clean and simple design. Plus, when you are seated, it looks like Pac-Man is eating you.
pac seat
Anyone can sit on this chair safely, unless you are a ghost. If you are a ghost, this Pac-Man seat will eat you and then probably belch. Also, I don’t advise sitting on one if you are a cherry, strawberry, orange, apple, melon, bell, key or a Galaxian spaceship.

Bruno designed this chair for kids, but let’s be honest, this is for us geeks who are old enough to have played the game back in the 80′s. Give me some ghost tables now, and I would be completely happy.

Captain Americake (and the Cakevengers)

Fans of Captain America will immediately recognize the superhero in this photo as he pops his head out of this deliciously geeky cake. Though his projectile-shaped head reminds me a little bit of Bullet Bill from the Mario games.

But Captain America isn’t the only baked Avenger in this room. No, sirree. Iron Man, Hulk and Thor are ready to be devoured by the masses as well. These whimsical Avengers cakes were posted (and made?) by CakeCentral contributor Vera76 and were made for one very lucky child’s birthday party. Why didn’t my parents ever make me stuff like this when I was growing up?

Some Guy is Building His Own Drivable Cylon Raider, Surprisingly Not Baltar

I love vintage Battlestar Galactica as much as I love the more recent version. And I do have a soft spot for old-school Cylons, so I find it awesome that Eugene Haggerty from Clearwater, Florida is building a half-scale, drivable replica of the original Cylon Raider.
cylon raider
He started construction in October of last year and the goal is to have it ready by Galacticon 3 this May in Houston, Texas. Eugene estimates that he has about 150 hours of build time to go on this project. He has already spent $10,000(USD) on the project and he thinks that the total cost will exceed $20,000. After Galacticon, he may even take it to Dragon*Con 2013 and other conventions, too.

Man, I would love to see this Cylon Raider driving down the street. If you want to donate to the project, just click here for more details. This thing should look amazing when Eugene is finished.

The Ethiopian Caterpillar – Robot Bug of the 19th Century

I’m always mesmerized by the intricate craftsmanship found in antique automatons. I think it’s something about the fact that people could build robotics without any electrical or electronic components that is truly amazing. One of the more incredible automatons to pop onto my radar screen of late is this mechanical caterpillar that dates back to 1820.

ethiopian caterpillar

The Vers de Sois caterpillar was apparently created by Swiss clockmaker Henri Maillardet nearly 200 years ago. This detailed, jewel-encrusted caterpillar can actually crawl across a flat surface when wound up. Check it out in action:

Sure, it’s a bit noisy, but still impressive, no? Well, all of this incredible miniature automation doesn’t come cheap though. The Vers de Sois caterpillar recently sold at auction for over $415,000(USD). I think I’ll stick with my HexBugs for now.

Classic Macintosh Pen Holder: The Mac is Mightier than the Pen

It’s been nearly 30 years since the original Macintosh hit the scene, so that definitely makes me feel old. But despite being ancient technology, I still love the little computer that smiled at you when you powered it on, and frowned when it crashed. And while I’m currently working on a 2011 iMac with a 27-inch screen, I’ve finally found a way to keep a classic Macintosh on my desktop.

macintosh pen holder

Thanks to Technabob friend, artist, and all around good guy Metin Seven, we can now have a happy Mac to hold on to our pens! It measures about 2.6″ x 2.6″ x 3.3″, and is perfect for holding onto all of your pens, pencils, X-Actos and other long and pointy desktop objects. Thanks to the miracles of 3D printing tech, you can get your grubby little mitts on this classic Mac pen holder for about $53(USD).

Just don’t try cramming a 3.5″ MacPaint disk into that tiny drive slot. It’ll take way more than a paper clip to get it out of there if you wedge one in there.

Autodesk 123D Creature 3D Character Design App: from Your iPad to Your Pad

In case you’ve forgotten the power and versatility of today’s mobile devices, Autodesk’s 123D Creature app will be one hell of a reminder. The app has all you need to create your own 3D character, from building a skeleton to sculpting and painting and even ordering a 3D print of your creation. Now you can create alien genitalia monsters wherever you are.

Watch the demo to get a better idea of what you can do with the app:

How awesome it that? Seriously. It’s like reverse Skylanders. Can you imagine showing this to a kid who loves to doodle and draw monsters? You’ll vaporize his very soul with this revelation. Good luck explaining that to his parents. Unfortunately for Android users, Autodesk 123D Creature is only available for the iPad. Get it from the iTunes App Store (link opens iTunes) for $1.99 (USD).

Chocolate Bruce Willis Die Hard Sculpture: Yummy-Ki-Yay!

This chocolate sculpture of Bruce Willis was made for a press conference in Japan for the release of A Good Day To Die Hard. It looks even more like Bruce Willis than Joseph Gordon-Levitt did in Looper. It’s a good day to bite hard on this delicious sculpture.

Only the Japanese could take a pointless movie sequel and use it as a good excuse to make a life-sized chocolate treat. Who else is going to do it? No one! Thank you, kind people of Japan.

Come out to Japan… Check your own likeness in chocolate… Have a few bites. Little did John McClane know that Japanese terrorists had turned the heat up in the building, threatening to melt the sculpture unless they got 640 million dollars in bearer bonds.

Vacuum Tube Flash Drives Combine Old School, New School Tech

I’ve already got more flash drives than I know what to do with, but every once in a while I’ll see some that I need to add to my seemingly endless collection anyway. With these cool flash drives made out of old vacuum tubes, you’ll be able to send your data back in time.

red vacuum tube flash drive

They’re made by Latvian steampunk artist Slava Tech, and use old Pentode tubes as containers for USB flash memory. The coolest part is how they glow from the red, green or blue LED inside. It would be really cool if he made one with an orange LED for a more authentic look, though the red one is pretty close.

blue vacuum tube flash drive

Each one is based on a high quality SanDisk flash drive, set into an old Russian vacuum tube from the 1980s, and accented with copper details.

green vacuum tube flash drive

Prices for the vacuum tube flash drives range from $69 to $79(USD), and they’re currently available in either 8GB or 16GB storage options.

GnomeZ: Zombie Garden Gnomes Invade Your Lawn

Zombies are all the rage these days, so it’s no wonder that the undead want to spend some more time out in the open. And what better way for your zombies to get out more but for them to watch over your garden?

gnomez zombie gnome 1

GnomeZ is a new line of handmade and hand-painted resin zombie garden gnomes. The first in the series is Todd Grumble, a 10-inch-tall zombie definitely looks a little pissed off – probably because there are other zombie kids hanging and ripping apart the living on his front lawn.

gnomez zombie gnome 2

You can get your hands on your very own Todd Grumble zombie garden gnome at GnomeZ for €69.00 (~$95 USD), and even comes with his own Brain Consumption Permit issued by the Federal Bureau of Zombification. As if you needed a permit to eat brains.

Throne of Nerds: A Song of USB and QWERTY

The iron throne is made up of many many sharp swords, but what would a throne look like in a nerd kingdom? Well, it would probably look something like this Throne of Nerds, covered with keyboards everywhere.

throne of nerds 1

Image: Cheryl DeWolfe

This throne will not cut those who sit upon it. If anything the keys will provide some minimal cushioning for your backside. It was made by Mike DeWolfe, a computer programmer from Canada.

throne of nerds 2

He warped the keyboards and even scorched almost all of the ESC keys to symbolize how impossible it can be escape suffering and blackness. Mike sounds like a cheery guy. I’m not living in his nerd kingdom. The only key that is left undamaged is the ESC key on the highest positioned keyboard.

In back, the keyboard cables have been arranged like human hair that is roughly braided, but not really. It is a tangle. This shows how good plans and order can degenerate into chaos. Or it’s just a cool chair made out of old keyboards. You decide.
