Cloud Machine: Make Your Own Weather

There’s something magical about being able to control the weather, especially if there’s a way to improve it. Personally, I’d like to have some sort of device in my backyard so I can make sure that it won’t rain when I barbecue in the summer. While that might not be something you can buy today, it is feasible to tweak weather conditions in small areas.

cloud machine weather modification

Media artist Karolina Sobecka developed a machine for weather modification, after she was inspired by the idea of artificially generated climate change. The Cloud Machine is made up of gear that’s sent up into the atmosphere, attached to a weather balloon. Once it reaches the right altitude, it disperses ‘cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), heat, and water vapor. Moisture in the air condenses into fog droplets around the CCN, creating small clouds.

The goal of this was to create brighter, more reflective clouds that will better shield the Earth’s surface from the Sun’s radiation, partially counteracting global warming in the immediate vicinity. While I’m not sure about the science behind that concept, it’s still cool that you can make your own weather.

Give Drones the Slip in Adam Harvey’s Stealth Wear

The ready availability and widespread usage of surveillance technology is enough to drive most level-headed people paranoid. Drones, hidden and visible security cameras, sensors, communications tracing systems… they’re all around us and at any given moment, they could be used to track your whereabouts and monitor your every move.

People have been protesting these technologies for use, with news that various government organizations employ them on a regular basis. No one has been more vocal about them than designer Adam Harvey, who made his stand clear through his newest fashion collection called ‘Stealth Wear.’

stealth wearThe pieces in his collection stay true to his message, with one them being dubbed as the ‘anti-drone hoodie’, which is crafted from a metalized material that makes it impossible for drones to detect your thermal image with their sensors. Then there’s the ‘XX-shirt’, which I presume protects against X-rays since it’s supposed to “protect your heart from X-ray radiation.”

Harvey explains: “Military technology is coming home from the war. These pieces are designed to live with it, to cope with it–to live in a world where surveillance is happening all the time.”

I think it’s an awesome thing that he’s doing with ‘Stealth Wear.’ What do you think?

Millennium Falcon Mac and PC Computer in One

Wanna make the Kessel Run in record time, while surfing the internet at the same time? You’d better use this Millenium Falcon computer then. It was the grand prize winner in last year’s Deconstruct for GOOD event sponsored by Good Magazine and Vizio.
Millenium Falcon pc and Mac
This Millennium Falcon has both a PC and a MAC inside. When you and your Wookiee co-pilot can’t agree on an operating system, use both. Builder Ken Swallow removed the insides of a model ship and replaced them with a Mac Titanium G4 motherboard and a MSI ATX motherboard (PC) while keeping the original sound effects from the toy intact.

He added fans, lights and power switches for both computers. So you have a full Windows 7 PC and MAC OSX 10.5.8 system, with Linksys wireless, an Apple airport card and more – all inside of a spaceship. Hyperspace on over to Etsy to get more specs, or buy it for $2,800(USD). If you can’t afford that, you can always borrow some credits from Jabba.

Darth Vader Samurai: Turning Japanese

Darth Vader is still one of the greatest villains in the history of entertainment. But did you know that his helmet was inspired by the helmets of Japanese Samurai warriors? Well you do now. In tribute to the Dark Lord’s Japanese roots, toy maker Avatar666 created this awesome little guy.

This custom Munny toy perfectly mashes up Vader with his Samurai inspiration, with a shiny little helmet, adorned with warrior details and dual-wielding blue lightsabers. Thought I really want them to be lightkatanas. And red.

This particular toy has already been sold, but you can email avatar666 if you’d like to custom order one for yourself.

Lomography Smartphone Film Scanner Hits Kickstarter

My mother has boxes of old 35mm film from my youth tucked away in closets and the attic. Most of those pictures we have probably never looked at because the prints were lost long ago. If you have a bunch of old 35mm film around, a new product is on Kickstarter which will help you get these images into your smartphone in digital form.

lomo film scanner

The Lomography Smartphone Film Scanner is a device which lets you feed through 35mm film through and a backlight. That backlight makes the images glow and then you use a smartphone, such as the iPhone and an app to take a digital photo of the 35mm film. The film scanner works with any 35mm film and also works with 35mm analog movie film. It’s also a perfect companion to the LomoKino 35mm moviemaker.

The film scanner is relatively inexpensive, and at this point a pledge of $60(USD) or more will get you one of the first of the devices manufactured. For around $100, you can get a bundle which includes both the scanner and a cheap 35mm camera. The project was seeking $50,000 and so far has raised over $99,000 with 18 days to go. The expected delivery date is March of 2013.

Disney Promote Wreck-It Ralph in London with 8-bit Lane

Wreck-It Ralph has been released in a lot of places worldwide, my country of residence included, and I really found it entertaining and enjoyable. If you like video games at the very least and played a couple of games when they were still all pixelly and in 8-bit form, then chances are you’ll like the movie, too.

The film doesn’t come out in the UK until February 8, 2013, so Disney is going the extra mile – or is it the extra lane? – to promote the movie by setting up 8-bit Lane in London.

8Bit LondonIt’s basically a street art exhibit where, if you look closely, you’ll spot a few things that aren’t as they should be. For example, water flowing out of a pipe looks suspiciously pixelated. Two pigeons on a pipe also get treated to some 8-bit action.

All of the sculptures on 8-bit Lane were created by Aden Hynes, who is Disney’s film production sculptor. Check out more of the exhibit in the gallery below.

Star Wars AT-ST Trophy Heads Fit for a Rebel’s Man Cave

Last week we saw mockups featuring taxidermy heads of Star Wars creatures. These AT-ST trophy heads on the other hand are real. Well, they’re not real real, but realer than the Photoshopped images. I’m not saying the images don’t exist, but dammit you know what I mean.

The trophy heads were made by YouTuber Trilda from Star Wars toys that he bought on eBay. He made two AT-ST heads, one from the Battle of Hoth and one from the pivotal battle at Endor.

You can check out larger images of the trophy heads on Trilda’s website (they’re under the Vintage Taxidermy link); head to his YouTube channel for videos. He says in the description of his videos that he’s willing to sell his creations, but I’m not sure if they’re still available and for how much.

Amazing BMO Adventure Time Birthday Cake Has a Colorful Surprise on the Inside

The multifunctional BMO crosses over with Nyan Cat in this spectacular birthday cake that was baked for somebody named Pen. I’m sure those who were were in attendance at Pen’s birthday party had an awesome time that was made even more awesome, thanks to the mere presence of this fantabulous, multi-layered and multi-colored cake.

Adventure Time CakeThe image was posted on Reddit, where users were quick to analyze how the BMO cake was made.

In case you were wondering yourself, here’s how, according to user static80085:

  1. Separate the batters out and individually dye them with food colouring like so.
  2. Prepare 6 shallow, square cake pans (size is dependent on your cake size).
  3. For each cake pan, pour all of the colors in the color scheme you’d like at the middle of the cake pan (e.g. pour the red in first, then the yellow, then the green, etc.). Example would be here.
  4. Bake and assemble!

This cake is just pure win.

Seaweed Chewbacca: Under the Kashyyyk Sea

There’s a little known species of Wookiee that is often seen walking out of the ocean, known as Seaweed Wookiees. Okay, that’s a lie, but it would be cool to have ocean dwelling Wookiees that attacked folks on land. For now, all we have is this image from friends of redditor entreprenerds, who assembled this seaweed critter on a beach in Queensland.

chewbacca seaweed
It’s pretty cool and I never would have thought that seaweed would have made such good Wookiee fur. And yes, nerds, we are aware that his bandolier is on the wrong shoulder. I must be a super nerd myself, because it was the first thing that I noticed. If it bothers you that much, just do a horizontal transform in Photoshop and you’ll be fine.

It kind of looks like a Chewbacca scarecrow – which I would also like to see. Maybe this guy can help out with my request.

Website Turns Dirty Pics into ‘Safe For Work’ Images (SFW?)

It didn’t take long to realize that one thing most guys have in common – regardless of their age, status, nationality, or occupation – is a universal love for porn. It sounds pretty gross, but I’ll just chalk that desire up to hormones and to the fact that that’s just how they were made.

So for the guys out there who feel like they aren’t getting their regular fill of the stuff (and for the women who like it, too), here’s some good news: you can now check out some adult content at work, thanks to PornSFW.com, which features women (and some men) in various poses that are actually safe for work!

How is that even possible? Here’s how:

Porn SFW8

See what they did there? It’s pretty hilarious, mostly because of the paint overlays. This is probably the first (and only time) I’ll find porn funny. The site hosts a collection of images similar to the one above, showing women in the usual porn poses that have been modified to make them viewable for people of all ages, anytime, anywhere.

Granted, you’ll have to use your imagination if you’re actually using the site at work to, well, you know. But for the rest of us, it’s just some unusual fun to be had from a very unlikely source.
