Switch Bench: Turn It off Before You Leave

The Switch Bench is probably the funnest, quirkiest bench that I’ve seen in years. At first glance, you’ll see that the bench stays true to its name since it looks like a gigantic switch, like the ones you can commonly find on household appliances and voltage regulators.

But the switch (which pretty much comprises the entire bench) isn’t just there for show, because it actually works.

Switch BenchThe fun begins when the sun sets. If you happen to come across the bench and, well, want to sit on it, then push the giant switch to the ‘on’ position to illuminate the whole thing. When you’re ready to go, just flip it back to the ‘off’ position and go your merry way.

Because of its design, seating is pretty much limited to a maximum of two, but I doubt anyone would mind because of its sheer ingenuity.

The Switch Bench was designed and created by HIK Ontwerpers.

Minecraft 1:1500 Scale Earth Map: Yo Dawg…

Forget about Second Life or Sims. Planet Minecraft member lentebriesje is currently working on a series of 1:1500 Minecraft maps that are based on our own planet. So you can play on Earth while playing on Earth.

Lentebriesje is using WorldPainter – a free and open-source program that makes it easier to create Minecraft maps – as well as a global relief model of Earth made by the National Geophysical Data Center for more accurate topography. Lentebriesje made the maps as building platforms; he’ll leave the man-made structures up to other players to recreate (or not!). Also there’s nothing to mine in this mini-Earth but stone.

Head to Planet Minecraft to download the maps, which are separated by continents. As I said the maps are still in progress; Asia isn’t even there yet.

Rip Van Winkle Knit Beard: Start Saving up for Next Decembeard

It’s funny how these days it’s so easy to go buy yourself a beard if you don’t have the patience to grow one. But if you’d like a really long beard – and I mean a REALLY long beard, then you’re out of luck. Until now.

rip van winkle knit beard

Yes, thanks to artist Alexa Allamano of Foamy Wader, you can now own a knit beard inspired by the nearly endless facial hair of Rip Van Winkle – which is way better than the facial hair on Robert Van Winkle. This handknit beard measures a whopping 28-feet-long, which means you’ll need to wrap it around like a bunch of scarves when you want to walk around.

For some reason, it actually reminds me of some sort of giant snake when it’s lying there on the ground, so I’m not so sure I’d want it around my neck for fear that it would strangle me to death when I least expect it.

If you don’t have the time to take a 100-year sleep and grow your own megabeard, then head on over to Etsy, where the first $500(USD) will be granted the wish of an instant beard – and the warmest scarf ever.

Metal Gear Bento Box for Snake Eaters

There’s a lot you can do with your food. Eating it is one of them. Playing around with textures and using it for art is another. We’ve seen a couple of awesome bento boxes featuring popular characters and pop culture themes, like Super MarioEvil Dead and even Bioshock.

Another one to add to the list is this awesome-looking Metal Gear-inspired meal, served up inside Sony’s new PS3 bento box.

Metal Gear BentoIt was specially commissioned to commemorate the game’s twenty-fifth anniversary. It’s kind of hard to believe that the faces of the featured characters are actually made from mashed potatoes!

Tapioca was apparently used to achieve their unique eye colors, while green onions were used for the characters’ hair and beards. Now this is food art at its best.

Record Made from Ice Plays (Until it Melts)

I’ve actually been in a couple of ice hotels, and I know that the frozen stuff is a very interesting material, but I’ve never heard anyone using ice to make a record. This froze 7-inch promotional record was released by indie band Shout Out Louds.

ice record shout out louds

This single is Shout Out Louds’ latest and the first off their new upcoming full-length album. The ice record was created in collaboration with ad agency TBWA Stockholm, and required a lot of experimentation to get it right.

The limited-edition package (just 10 were made) includes a specialized silicone ice mold that allows for quick removal out of the freezer and will allow you to listen to the tunes for a lot longer, and includes a bottle of distilled water to avoid bubbles in the tracks.

The record can be played on a regular turntable, and the audio quality will rapidly diminish as the ice starts to melt – especially from the friction of the needle on the surface.

Justice League of America Defaced Bills: in Good We Trust

In the comics, the bad guys are always pretty obvious. In the real world, they look just like you and I. In the real world they run banks and pull scams on Wall Street. They work in our government. They get rich at the expense of others as they grow fat and laugh, while people starve on the street. Their name is greed and they are the vilest form of scum and villainy you will find. We need the Justice League to save our economy!
justice league
The team is on it thanks to artist Aslan Malik from Berlin, Germany. He put these cool ‘legal’ notes together to fight economic injustice in the world. There is Hamilton as Batman, Jackson as Wonder Woman, Ben Franklin as the Green Lantern, Lincoln as the Flash and Ulysses S. Grant as Superman.

He did a great job on these. If real money was this cool, people would still be spending cash instead of using their debit cards.

Gingerbread Star Trek Communicator: Eat Me up, Scotty!

Scotty. One to beam up. And hurry up, I’m hungry. I don’t want to eat my communicator and end up stranded on this alien planet. Yep, this is a gingerbread version of a standard-issue Starfleet communicator from Star Trek.

gingerbread communicator

It comes from the author of Trek food blog Food Replicator. Indeed, there is a whole blog devoted to Star Trek food. Big surprise, nerds like nerd food. The gingerbread communicator actually sounds pretty easy to make if you want one for yourself. To make it, he cut out the pattern pieces on thick card paper and used them to cut out the cookie pieces. He then used royal icing for all the decorations and to glue the pieces together.

I especially like the detail on the speaker grill. It’s obviously delicious. Judging by William Shatner’s girth these days, I’m betting he ate a few of these in between takes.

Atari 2600 VCS: Video Cake System

I have fond memories of the original Atari 2600. It was my first gaming platform. Not sure how many hours I sat playing games with it, but it led to a lifelong love of video games. If I had the talent, I would make a cake in honor of this console. But I don’t have to, because The Pink Cake Box already made an Atari 2600 cake for one man’s 40th birthday party.

atari cake
Rafael’s wife had this cake made for him and that makes her one super awesome wife. What we have here is an edible console, joysticks and two cartridges. The cartridges are Pacman and Vanguard, which I must imagine taste much better than E.T. or Pepsi Invaders.

Check out the video of the cake above. It makes me want to play this old console again. Also makes me hungry.

Sure, this isn’t the only Atari 2600 cake ever made, but it could be the best one yet.

Rhinestone Pokémon Bra: Gotta Catch All ‘Em Boobies

Go figure that this isn’t actually the first time we’ve featured a Pokémon bra here on Technabob, but this is most definitely the sparkliest Pokémon bra we’ve had on the site. And since you guys probably can’t resist a good pair of Pokéballs Pokéboobs, now’s as good a time as any to feature this sexy/geeky underthing.

pokemon bra

This shimmering Pokémon bra was made by Claire of Neon Wonderland, and is covered in literally hundreds of colorful rhinestones. They’re available in any cup size and padding level you’d like – but only the basic Poké Ball design. Maybe if you’re nice to Claire, you can convince her to make a Sport Ball sports bra. They sell for $70(USD) over on Etsy.

Space Invaders Invade Snowy Mountainside

What are crop circles trying to tell us? I have no idea, but I know that this HUGE Space Invaders art that takes up a whole mountainside can only mean one thing. The aliens are finally invading. And this is likely a signal for their human collaborators.
space invaders art

Remember when you used to make words or shapes in the snow by stamping your boot tracks or lying in the snow? Well, you never created anything halfway as cool as this. Sorry. This just blows your stupid snow angels away. Simon Beck is a snow art boot tracking pro. I mean that pro part. This guy walked and walked and walked, creating each little pattern piece until he created these incredible gigantic Space Invaders on the side of a mountain.

space invaders art1
What the hell did you do today? Did you make aliens on the side of a mountain? With your feet? That aliens can see from space?
