Pianocade: Super Mega Synthesizer Arcade Controller Combo

The Pianocade is the embodiment of chiptune music. It’s a synthesizer that looks and works like an arcade controller, down to the analog joystick and token buttons.

But the Pianocade’s gamer theme isn’t just skin deep. It’s open source, hacker-friendly synthesizer board is based on the NES and Game Boy sound hardware, so it makes the monophonic pings and blips out of the box. Here’s a demo of the Pianocade’s features:

And here’s the Pianocade being used by Shaun Hatton aka Megashaun to play live:

Portmanteau Devices is selling one- and two-octave variants of the Pianocade; the former costs about $250 (USD) and the latter is about $350. You can also pre-order just the electronics for about $100.

Portmanteau Devices said that they will try to make the Pianocade also work as a USB game controller out of the box, but that’s not their priority right now. They did say that they might release a firmware update later on if they can’t do it by the time the device is released. Perhaps one of you clever hackers will even do the job for them.

Stargate SG-1 Death Glider Made from LEGO

I’m huge fan of Stargate both on the big screen and the TV series that ran for so long. In fact, my first date with my future wife years ago was to see Stargate on the big screen. We watched each season of the TV show and even watched the spinoff series as well. I particularly liked Stargate Atlantis.

Combining my love of Stargate and LEGO, a guy going by Kevin Walter has created this replica of the Death Glider from the Stargate SG-1 television series using the ubiquitous building blocks. Kevin used gray and beige bricks for the design and the finished product looks really cool. I particularly like the way he pulled off the canopy.

I also like the way he created the canons that pop open before they fire. Sadly, there are no plans offered so you can build your own version of this flying aircraft, but you can check out more pics of the ship over on Flickr.

Stephen King’s The Dark Tower Shot Down at Warner Bros.

Stephen King is one of the most celebrated modern authors in the world. He has a huge number of books, movies, and TV shows to his credit. King is typically thought of as a horror writer, but some of my favorite stories King has ever written don’t necessarily fit the traditional horror genre.

dark tower

Some of my favorite books from King are The Dark Tower series that follows gunslinger Roland Deschain. This series of books has been optioned for a movie and a TV show tie in, but fans of the franchise will be saddened to hear that things are looking bad for The Dark Tower right now. Warner Bros. has officially passed on developing an adaptation of the book series for the big screen and for TV.

Sadly, Warner Bros. taking a pass comes after Universal Pictures passed on it last year. The curious thing is that the project had a serious names attached to it, with Ron Howard attached to direct at least the first part of the series and set to oversee the entire project. Russell Crowe was also said to be interested in playing the gunslinger. The project would have had a movie trilogy with a limited run TV shows that would tie content between the three movies. I’ll add this project right next to the Halo live-action movie on my list of the best movies that never were.

Starship Enterprise RC Plane: Boldly Go Zip Around the Park

Here’s your chance to be the Picard, Kirk or Janeway of your own USS Enterprise. It’s not a high tech starship, just a small remote-controlled plane, but let’s face it: if you suddenly found yourself on the NCC-1701-D, you and everyone in your crew might as well be wearing red shirts.

The plane was designed by RC enthusiast Dennis aka SGTalon. It’s made from foam and a glued-on skin. Dennis sells kits with all the ship’s parts and skin, but you’ll have to supply the other parts such as the rods and motor, and of course put them all together. The video below is a review of the kit courtesy of YouTuber joehandsome99. You can skip to about 3:05 to see it fly:

You can order the USS Enterprise RC kit from SGTalon for $22-$87 (USD). Not a Trekkie? Dennis also sells Cylon Raider and Imperial Destroyer kits.

Weerol is the Toy that Grows with Your Child

Raising kids these days is expensive. Aside from the basics, like food and clothing, there’s also the “extra” expenses like toys. Based on what you’ve probably heard from you friends, kids outgrow toys almost as fast as they outgrow their clothes. So how about a ‘toy’ of sorts that grows with your child? Something like the Weerol.

Weerol0The Weerol is a modern, re-configurable, customizable, natural, active toy platform that you can disassemble and put back together into something your child would need (or be able to use), according to his or her age.

Weerol1

Constructed from renewable birch laminate and BPA free thermoplastic rubber treads, the Weerol has been designed to convert easily between different configurations while still remaining safe and sturdy.

It’s available in three lively prints, and also comes in a plain version, in case you want to customize, decorate, or paint over it yourself.

Weerol is currently up for funding on Kickstarter, where a minimum pledge of $79(USD) will get you one of your very own Weerol kit.

Alien Darth Vader Helmet: Ripley, Believe it or Not!

If Darth Vader were a Xenomorph, man, that would be one heck of a scary movie. Scarier than all of the Alien movies combined. Behold the evilness right here before your very eyes. Thomas Spanos from the ‘As You Wish Project‘ created this mashup of Lord Vader and a Xenomorph into one cool helmet.

hrg trooperIt even features Vader’s lightsaber as the secondary alien mouth. It’s called the HRG Trooper, named after artist H.R.Giger who designed the original Alien. It is terrifying and awesome.

If Ripley saw this thing she would have just run out of an airlock. You can’t fight something this awesome and insane. You just can’t win against Vader as an alien.

Anatomical Portraits Go Beyond Skin Deep

I’m sure you’ve seen anatomical models of the different human systems when you took biology in high school. There’s the good, old skeletal system and of course, the muscular system.

Maybe Koen Hauser had these lessons in mind when he came up with his recent series, because they’re creative, different, and probably all anatomically correct.

Anatomy Portrait

Dubbed the ‘Modische Atlas der Anatomie’ or the ‘Fashionable Atlas of Anatomy’ when translated, the series features digital manipulations that literally strip the skin off of the models to reveal the organs and muscles underneath.

The images exude contrasting elements, with models posing in a relaxed manner while their bones and tendons are revealed in the same image.

Anatomy Portrait1

Even more impressive is the fact that he came up with this series and published it over a decade ago.

With this series, Koen was able to masterfully and artistically combine both science and art into one neat package.

Pokémon Generation 1 Cross-Stitched: Textile Pokédex

Linda aka Eponases wants to be the very best Pokémon stitcher, like no one ever was. So she took the original Pokémon and cross-stitched ‘em all in one piece of cloth.

Linda based her project on a pattern uploaded by a user named Servotron on the Sprite Stitch forums. She says the materials she used only amounted to about $80 (USD). I’m sure there are fans there who’d be willing to pay a lot more than that for the finished product, specially when they find out that it took Linda nearly 8 months to finish it. Here’s Linda with her work:

Here’s a stop motion time lapse video that Linda made to document her impressive achievement.

Replay Arcade Machine Will Cost You More Than a Token

Arcade machines are a part of a generation gone by. With arcade centers closing left and right, a lot of nostalgic gamers have taken to building or buying their own machine for home use. I’m sure many arcade fans would want to preserve the loud and garish old school look of the machines, but if you’re looking for something more subtle check out the Replay Arcade.

The Replay Arcade is a one-off machine made by London-based Tom Goodfellow. According to Tom, the machine is equipped with a JAMMA circuit board (similar to this one) that has 60 games built-in, as well as “arcade industry standard joystick and buttons.” I’m not up to date on arcade standards, but who are we to doubt the words of a Goodfellow? But it’s most outstanding quality is the cabinet’s retro and minimalist design.

R2-D2 Beverage Dispenser Serves the Drinks You Are Looking for

This little droid may not look like much, but he’s fulled to the brim. With booze. Or whatever other beverage you choose. This R2 unit has electronic Super Soaker parts inside and here, he is filled with blue gatorade.
r2 drink dispenser
Due to the unfortunate placement of his spigot, it actually looks like the little droid is relieving himself right into your cup. That’s a great image to consider while you are drinking up. Inside is the Super Soaker pump and a water bottle to store liquid. R2′s body was one of those big protein drink mix containers. Its creators explain “After spraying it white and masking off the entire thing with blue painter’s tape, the shapes for the blue designs were cut out and painted. Half of a foam sphere from the hobby shop was used to form the dome.”

Pretty cool, but I’m glad we never saw R2 relieve himself in the movies. I didn’t know droids peed blue, though, so you learn something new every day.
