ASCII Street View: Look at the Matrix

Here’s a fun and trippy hack made by programmer Peter Nitsch. Nitsch’s website converts feed from Google’s Street View to ASCII art in real time. You can also search for locations, just like in the vanilla web app. And yep, it has a “green mode.”

Here’s a closer look at that shot:

And here’s the Matrix mode:

You really should see it for yourself. Nitsch recommends using Chrome or Firefox 8 and above. The characters change as the view slowly pans. It’s like looking at the world from the point of view of a computer.

MIRAGE Substitutional Reality System: One Step Closer to Total Recall

This “substitutional reality system” was developed by the Japanese Laboratory for Adaptive Intelligence at the RIKEN Brain Science Institute. It was created to fuse performance art with perceived reality for its wearer. While it’s doesn’t produce the sort of directly implanted memories seen in Total Recall, the visual and audio portions are immersive enough to trick your mind anyhow.

The headgear is supposed to seamlessly meld the live video with recordings from the past as well as performances from dancers. Sounds groovy. It combines fiction and reality, making them indecipherable from each other. It’s definitely an interesting conundrum, not being able to tell if what you’re seeing is in fact real, just a recording or a hybrid of both.

The MIRAGE is a unique take on augmented reality, though I’m sure under the right circumstances, it could be used to brainwash people. You still want to try it out?

Return Of The Jedi LEGO Chess Set: Ewok to Walker 2, Check!

We’ve seen Star Wars chess sets before and we’ve seen some LEGO chess sets as well, but this one combines both and is a real work of art. It’s the third in a series of LEGO chess sets designed by Brandon Griffith. Each commemorates the three original Star Wars movies. You know, the good ones. At least two of them.

For the Return of the Jedi chess set, you can play as either the Imperials or the Rebels. Of course, the bad guys are always more fun. Brandon really did a great job of thinking out of the detail and building some clever pieces, with lots of detail.

Lego chess set 1
The Endor theme of the board is really nice, especially the Ewok and Scout Stormtroopers as pawns. Though you’ve got to wonder about the Emperor as King and Darth Vader as Queen on the Empire side of the board.

If all chess sets were this cool, I might be bothered to actually play the game. Great work Brandon.

The Dark Knight Weds

When true Batman fans decide to tie the knot, they don’t do it in half-measures. Check out these classy, stunning gold and black wedding ideas. If you want to have a classy Batman wedding, there are some good ideas here, collected by the guys over at When Geeks Wed.
batman wedding ideas
You’ve got your invitations with gold batarangs, your black wedding dress with gold utility belt like belt etc. It’s all gold and black using the Batman costume from the movies as inspiration. The Batsignal could be used to signal the bride and groom to walk down the aisle. And I would also suggest that the ring bearer look like Jim Gordon or Robin.

Hopefully we will see some couples use some of these ideas and throw an awesome Batman-themed wedding (and send us some pics.)

Kuratas Mech: Real or Fake, It’s Still Awesome

I’m going to start saying that I’m taking this with a huge grain of salt. This robot looks very realistic, yet has a somewhat cheesy and viral attempt feel to it at the same time. Watch the video for yourself and see what you think. The video is supposed to be a how-to video from a company called Suidobashi Heavy Industry.

kuratas robot

The video goes over how to ride a robot called the Kuratas. The 13-foot-tall wheeled robot is clearly a nod at the Mechwarrior series of video games and any number of Japanese animated shows. In the video, you can see petite Japanese woman climbing into the chest cockpit cavity of the robot and going over the controls, including a remote smartphone-operated mode.

The controls look easy-to-use and seem realistic. You’ll note on the left arm there are twin multi-barreled cannons. How scary would it be as a soldier on about film to have one of these massive robots come walking up? The video claims the top speed of the bot, which has a torso and two arms but rolls on wheels, is 10 km/h. The bot uses a diesel engine and can be driven in high or low modes. The missile launcher appears to be packed with water bottles and will “from time to time” hit its target.

If this is just a fake viral video, it’s extremely well done. If it’s real, we could soon have mechs walking the streets of Tokyo.

Avengers Matryoshka Dolls: Stack and Assemble!

With over a billion dollars at the box office, The Avengers are having a banner year, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you wanted some Avengers themed collectibles for your desk, right? How about some awesome Avengers Matryoshka (Russian stacking dolls)?

avengers matryoshka 1

This set of Avengers stacking dolls was made by Australian artist Irene Hwang of BoBo Babushka. Each one is hand painted, and the set includes eight stacking Avengers ranging from the 9″ tall Incredible Hulk to the 3/4″ Loki. I know, Loki is a bad guy, but she made him so tiny it’s almost like he’s not even there.

The set also includes Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Nick Fury – complete with tiny eyepatch. The full set is available over on Etsy for $200 (USD), and you can check out more detailed images over on BoBo BaBushka’s Blog. Be sure to check out her Etsy shop for all kinds of other cool Matryoshka, including Kiss, The Flight of the Conchords, The Big Bang Theory, and Reno 911.

Toilet Paper Tube X-Wing Fighter: Wipe After Every Battle

If your family eats a lot of fiber, you too can have a rebel fleet with a complete armada of X-Wing fighters made out of toilet paper tubes. This squadron’s company motto is “Wipe your butt, then wipe out the Empire.” “Do your duty for the fleet.” Okay, enough bathroom humor.
tp X Wing Fighter
This is a cool project to turn your discarded toilet paper tubes into something useful and geeky. I didn’t come across any instructions, but if you just look at the images at homemademagic you can see how easy it is to create your own X-Wing. In addition to the T.P. rolls, you’ll probably need some paper towel tubes, cardboard and tape as well.

The X-Wing pilot shirt is of course required if you are going to be flying these things in both hands and making X-Wing noises. Even though many of us will look like Jek Porkins doing it. Okay guys, start using up more T.P. and make yourself a rebel fighter now!

TonSchreins Turn iPad and iPod nano into Shrines

I’ve always thought that hardcore Apple fans were so serious about their dedication to the brand that it’s almost like a religion to them. So when I saw these shrines made for the iPad and iPod nano, I thought they were very appropriate.

tonschrein ipad 1

The ornate TonSchrein for iPad and iPod nano were created by Georg Dinkel, and they clearly elevate these gadgets to a level of fanaticism not seen before.

tonschrein ipad 2

The intricate details of the two shrines were made using polymer clay, and the iPad version houses a 2.1 sound system, while the iPod nano version is just a two-speaker mono setup.

tonschrein ipad 4

While the iPad version would work well as a mantle clock, the iPod nano version seems even more ridiculous to me, adding substantial heft to Apple’s diminutive music player, as it hides behind the doors of the shrine.

You can check out more photos of the TonSchreins over on Dinkel’s website.

The Xbox 360 Bra Perfect for Button Mashers

After the TMNT and Pokemon bras, now comes the Xbox 360 controller bra. It’s the prefect way to make your boyfriend stop fiddling with his Xbox 360 and start playing with your buttons instead.

Each Xbox 360 controller bra is handpainted with permanent paints. It’s definitely an interesting bra, especially since the full details can only be seen once you get comfortable in your underwear. It could also be worn to a sexy geek costume party. You’ll definitely be ogled by geeks a plenty in this bra!

Unfortunately, for now, this bra is sold out and the seller requires 5 weeks to deliver a final garment. I’m sure geekettes everywhere will be lining up to get theirs. It sells for $35 to $45 from SceeneShoes.

R2-D2 Guitar Perfect for Your Anakin and the Astromechs Band

This is one fine droid guitar. Look at that amazing detailing. This custom built R2 guitar by Doug is simply amazing. Why can’t we buy stuff like this in guitar shops?
r2 d2 guitar
This is exactly the droid guitar that you are looking for. The next time those lame dancers start dancing around in Jabba’s palace to that lame music, they should pull this guitar out and get to rocking instead.

The body is custom cut from 2 pieces of poplar wood. Most of the guitar guts were from a used Ibanez he found of Craigslist. Those droid details? They are all hand painted with acrylic paint. Doug, why are you not making custom guitars for a living?
