AT-AT Made from Huggies Diaper Boxes: The Empire is Super Absorbent

Being a man, I’ve never been a stay-at-home mom. I imagine it can get pretty crazy, and at times boring and lonely. When the kids aren’t screaming and pooping all over the place, you are still cleaning up after all of that screaming and pooping. It’s enough to drive you crazy. It’s probably good to have a hobby. Like say, building AT-ATs out of diaper boxes.

huggies at at
That’s what stay-at-home mom, Kelly did in her spare time. She had a ton of Huggies boxes just laying around so she just did her amazingly crafty thang and whipped up this AT-AT that is super absorbent and stronger than the other leading brands.

From the looks of this thing, Kelly is super talented. I don’t remember my mom ever doing anything cool like that. While Kelly was creating this, her kids were probably in the corner throwing a (Boba) Fit… I hear you groaning.

LEGO Portal Set: Vote for It. For Science.

Remember the fan made LEGO Portal 2 figures? Remember how your insides hurt for days from wanting those toys so bad? Round up that desire and channel it into one mouse click. A group of fans have submitted a proposal to LEGO for three sets based on the hit puzzle game.

lego portal 2 cuusoo

The concept was submitted by Team Jigsaw, four LEGO enthusiasts who banded together in 2011 to compete in LEGO competitions. Now they need our help to make their concept come true. Although after you see what they have in mind I bet you’ll need no convincing. The three sets are GLaDOS’ Chamber, a Modular Testing Chamber and a Puzzle Board Game. All the major characters are represented here: Chell, Wheatley, the Companion Cube, the turrets and of course the adorable and murderous GLaDOS. And the potato.

lego portal 2 cuusoo 8 150x150

As with all LEGO pieces, you can mix and match these sets with each other, not to mention other LEGO sets, like the Minecraft set. But before that can happen, you and about 8,800 other people need to vote for the concept on LEGO Cuusoo. Go on, make your dreams come true.

Slave Leia Flash Drive is Chained to your Data

Mimoco has been offering Star Wars themed flash drives for a long time now. In fact, the latest batch of five themed flash drives is the eighth series to come from the company. I happen to think this series has what might be the coolest of all the Star Wars Mimobot flash drives the company has ever offered.

leia drive

Any male geek out there who is a fan of Star Wars probably remembers one specific scene from Return of the Jedi and that would be the scene where Princess Leia is clad in a gold bikini and chained to Jabba the Hutt.

slave leia mimobot

Mimoco is offering that Slave Leia flash drive complete with a chain around her neck and a bikini top. Granted the curved nature of the flash drive makes slave Leia a bit more portly than she was back in the 80s.

The series also includes a Jabba the Hutt flash drive, Admiral Ackbar flash drive (It’s a trap!), and Luke Skywalker Jedi drive. While that Princess Leia flash drive is most appealing to me, anyone intent on collecting these Mimobots want to keep an eye out at San Diego Comic-Con for a very limited edition Biker Scout drive. Only 1000 of those will be made and they will only be available at Comic-Con. The drives are available in 8 GB to 64 GB capacities here.

Classic Sci-Fi Scenes Get the LEGO Treatment

Official LEGO Star Wars sets have been around since 1999, but what our other geek needs? Where is our Blade Runner? Or TRON? Why is there no Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy set? LEGO, you are missing out on all of my money. Thankfully, The Living Brick’s “Mi-Fi“ Contest fulfills some of these dreams.

All the entries are in for the “Mi-Fi” contest, and the results are very very awesome. In addition to new scenes from Star Wars, there are LEGO-fied versions of TRON, The Matrix, Back to the Future, Avatar and many more! There’s even a tribute to Spaceballs.

Minecraft TARDIS: Blockier on the Everywhere

YouTuber UnlimitedMind42′s Doctor Who Minecraft machinima is so awesome you might not mind if the Twelfth Doctor was Dr. Steve. It’s all here – a TARDIS that’s actually bigger on the inside, time travel and a blocky David Tennant.

minecraft tardis

At first it seems that the Doctor is only traveling through space and not through time, but be patient. Who am I kidding – patience is a nonexistent virtue on the Internet. Skip to 3:00 in the video to see the proof that he is indeed traveling through time.

UnlimitedMind42 should have used the Weeping Angels mod for an additional reference. Again, this is not a mod, just a fun video, but you can get the textures that UnlimitedMind42 made – including the David Tennant skin – here.

Doctor Who TARDIS Quilt Surprisingly Not Made from the Fabric of Time

If you are a Doctor Who fan and are getting married, I hope you have a friend like graverobbergirl who created this TARDIS-themed quilt for her friend’s wedding present. She is a very good friend, indeed.
Tardis quilt
It features an swirling TARDIS surrounded by a whole mess of Daleks. Plus there’s a star field border on the outside. This queen-sized quilt measures 92″ x 92″ and is done in a pieced Irish Chain pattern. It was hand-quilted and machine-quilted, along with hand-applique and hand-embroidery.

The lucky couple will sleep just fine at night with this quilt keeping them warm. No doubt they will dream of Daleks and adventures on far away worlds. He will be the Doctor and she the companion. May they be happy for many years.

3D Mario Time Lapse Art Creation Captured on Video

Like most gamers that grew up in the 80s, I’m a big fan of Super Mario Bros. This is one of the most iconic games from my youth, right up there along with Pac-Man. In tribute to Mario, an artist named Chris Carlson has created a truly epic piece of 3D chalk artwork.

3d mario

It’s amazing to me that the image he draws is made with plain old chalk, yet looks completely three-dimensional. Carlson and his friend shot a time-lapse video to give you an idea how he creates the 3D art. It’s very impressive how he pulls it off starting with a flat perspective grid used to draw all the blocks for the pixel art Mario. He also uses a large metal ruler and copious amounts of chalk.

You need to watch the video for yourself to see how he pulls it off.  The video even has the familiar Super Mario theme song in the background, ensuring that it will be stuck in your head all day. I wonder how long it took Chris to create the image – it’s hard to tell since it’s a time-lapse video.

iPad Controls LED Wall Art

Sure, you can put some art on your wall, but how about putting up some LED wall art that’s controlled via your iPad? That’s exactly what Greg Friedland did and I have to say that the results are pretty cool. It’s definitely a nice way of filling up an empty wall in an apartment.

greg friedland aurora led wall art

Greg Friedland’s Aurora LED wall started out as an idea to put some art on a 6′×12′ wall in his living room. He created a grid of 544 LEDs that’s capable of 16 million colors, attached to a 4′×8′ wood board. The LEDs are controlled by a microcontroller, which in turn is controlled by a program running on a laptop. This software on his PC connects to an iPad, which allows interaction with the moving patterns. That seems like a lot of steps but I guess there’s no good way to control it directly from the iPad yet. There are also built-in modes that respond to music.

It’s something that I wouldn’t mind having on my empty living room wall. To find out how to make yours, check out Greg’s instructions here.

Superhero Tutus: Get Girls Ready for Batman Ballet

These superhero tutus are pretty adorable and will instantly turn your little girl into a member of the Junior Justice League or Anklebiting Avengers – and that is pretty awesome, because it gets more little girls interested in superheros. Let’s face it, comic books don’t always write women characters all that well, so maybe these tutus will inspire a new generation of female comic book writers several years from now.

These come from the Goody Goody Tutus Etsy store. There are tutus for Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, Superman and many more. You name it, they have it. They are just amazingly cute.

Now, everyone buy these for their kid and we can put on the most amazing superhero ballet ever. Team Tutu assemble!

Nendo Rootote Bag: For Puppet Shows on the Go

Some multi-purpose things have a lot of alternate uses, and pretty good ones, too, like the shopping bag that doubles as a helmet. Then there’s Nendo’s Rootote Bag, which has a more novel second use, apart from being a bag, it’s also a puppet show.

puppet bag 1
These bags with puppets, with puppets like kangaroos, bears, humans, and dinosaurs, are a concept design by Oki Sato. Unexpectedly, there are many uses that an adult might have with an integrated puppet. For one, it’s instant entertainment for the kids and will keep them quiet, at least for a little while.

Another use for it, although pretty unconventional, is as a glove–so when you spot something you’d rather not touch, well, you can just stick your hand in the puppet and use it as you would a glove (but make sure to wash it thoroughly afterwards.)

If you’re sold on the idea, then you might have to wait a while because they’re not being commercially produced yet.
