F1 Car Made from Hundreds of Hard Drives

This F1 race car is a bit unusual. It is made from hundreds and hundreds of hard drives and that makes it look pretty awesome. Can you believe that those curves all come from hard drive parts? It was created by Western Digital’s Rob Ryan in a stunning bit of promotional marketing.

The tires are the only things not made from a Western Digital drive. The wheel hubs are made from 10,000rpm drive motors in the front and 7200rpm motors in the rear. They actually spin, having been milled down in a CNC machine. The side panels are a cluster of server-friendly WD Red hard drive parts, while the actuators form the front wing of the car. The rear wing is a combination of WD Velociraptor and Scorpio actuators.

There are even a stack of disk motors in the middle of the car for the driver’s head. Behind that is the replica V12 engine, assembled from 12 Western Digital Scorpio notebook hard drives. Even the LEDs in the body were taken from WD My Passport external hard drives. This thing is quite a piece of work. The detail is just stunning. Best use of hard drives yet!

Giant LEGO Mario Mushrooms: L-up

LEGO enthusiast Dirk aka dm_meister built pumpkin-sized versions of the mushroom power-ups from the Mario games. There’s the red Super Mushroom, the blue Mini Mushroom and the green 1-up Mushroom. Each model is made of almost 3,000 bricks and weighs 10lb. And they have eyes… holy crap I just realized Mario eats living creatures.

Dirk said he’ll upload a more helpful video with CGI building instructions. Keep an eye on his YouTube channel for that one. Meanwhile, you can check out more of his MOCs on his Flickr page.

Classic Video Game Controller Ornaments: A taribaum A taribaum

Gamers, get into the spirit of the holidays with these tiny but detailed ornaments that look like controllers from video game consoles of yore. There’s an Atari 2600 joystick, a Sega Genesis gamepad, a NES gamepad and a PlayStation controller. There’s a part of me that can’t accept that the PlayStation is a “classic” now.

Skyrim Nord Bow Replica: Skyforge IRL

I just want to stare all day at this amazing Skyrim Nord bow. It looks so authentic and beautiful. According to the maker it isn’t functional yet, but that shouldn’t be too difficult. Once it actually shoots, it will take your your knee clean off. Then you can complain about it forever.
skyrim nord bowmagnify

It was created by “propmaker, artist, costumer, and all around fan of gaming, sci-fi, and miscellany” Carmen from Fev Studios. Carmen, you have some mad skills, but I gotta say…”You’ll shoot your eye out kid!” Just saying. Be careful. That thing looks deadly. Deadly awesome.

This bow is about 52″ long. Carmen is a true weaponsmith with a skill level that you can’t even put a number on. Seriously, she’s leveling up all the time. I’m fairly scared of her, seeing her handle this weapon. That armor is pretty sweet too.

Doctor Who Mobile Will Help Your Child Through Their Latest Regeneration

Timelords have it so easy. They can die a jillion times and come back as a different person, who is really the same person and each time they are already an adult. No need to physically grow up at all. Humans on the other hand, even if you believe in regeneration/reincarnation, have to go through the messy process of being born, teething, pooping and peeing all over yourself etc. It’s not fair.

Well, this TARDIS mobile can help your baby through this tough human regeneration time. Or maybe it will tick your child off by reminding him or her of how easy Timelords have it.

This mobile belongs to some friends of UTLVRev1312, who bought the mobile on Etsy, though they don’t say what artist made it. You’ll notice it’s got a plush Doctor, a TARDIS, and a Dalek, but there’s also a weeping angel dangling about off camera. Best to not let your baby blink.

Get this. The baby’s name is Amelia. Do you think her last name is Pond? It wouldn’t surprise me.

When you are a rebel fighting Imperials, flying an X-Wing or a snowspeeder is all good, but you need to know how to properly aim your blaster. This war isn’t all about fancy ships and lightsaber battles. There will be a lot of blaster fire and you better know how to shoot. These awesome Star Wars target posters should help.

These designs by Sneaky Studios feature Darth Vader, a Stormtrooper holding Leia hostage, Boba Fett, and a rancor. Judging by the movies, Stormtroopers never practiced much on the range. Use that to your advantage and also use these posters.

You Could Live Inside the World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock

Cuckoo clocks are pretty amazing. I’m always fascinated by the engineering inside of them. They keep pretty good time too. Plus, all authentic cuckoo clocks are made by hand, so each one is unique. It is a fine tradition of craftsmen that are super talented. And now we have the world’s largest cuckoo clock, which is as big as a house.

cuckoo clockmagnify

According to Guinness World Records, this is the biggest cuckoo clock in the world and it is in Triberg, Germany. Of course. It’s a traditional Black Forest cuckoo clock design scaled up 60 times the size of the original. This clock weighs six tons.

cuckoo clock1magnify

The cuckoo bird itself is 4.5 meters long and weighs 150 kilograms. Like the real thing, this clock is made of wood and was carved entirely hand. The cuckoo calls once every quarter hour and then chimes every hour.

Unless you really like Cuckoo clocks, the sound would probably drive you nuts if you heard it all day.

‘Ramen’ses Return Cake: Oodles of Noodles

Threadless is currently holding a contest called Threadcakes – in which bakers submit cake designs inspired by Threadless t-shirts. There are a bunch of awesome and amusing submissions, but my favorite so far has to be this cake.

ramen ses return cake 620x609magnify

The cake was inspired by Jerry Maninang’s ‘Ramen’ses Return t-shirt design. The cake not only captures the essence of the amusing t-shirt’s design, but takes it to a whole ‘nother level, IMHO. Also cake is better for you than noodles. Or so I’ve been told.

This intricate vanilla buttermilk cake was made by Jessica Allard, who deserves all the accolades in the world for her amazing noodle cake. Check out all of the work she had to go through in order to create this incredible edible sculpture.

Be sure to check out all of the other delicious submissions in the Threadcakes gallery. I give my second place prize to Death is Random. Though Tea at 2,000 Feet is pretty spectacular too.

LEGO Question Block Ornament: Super Secret Santa Bros.

Chris McVeigh is on a roll. Shortly after releasing his tiny LEGO consoles, the man who calls himself Powerpig has released another miniature LEGO trinket. This one’s aimed at Christmas-loving gamers. It’s a LEGO question block ornament. Sadly, it doesn’t have any room inside for a coin, or anything for that matter.

As with his other projects, Chris made a free pdf guide for building the question block ornament as well as a commercial ready-to-assemble LEGO kit. You can buy the kit from his shop for $17.50 (USD).
