Radio Cube 3: Go Home, Rubik, You’re Drunk.

I know there are people out there who can solve a Rubik’s Cube in seconds, but I’m not one of them. I eventually could work my way through the puzzle, but it takes me 10 or 15 minutes on a good day. This puzzle, on the other hand, I’m NEVER solving.

What you’re looking at is a fully scrambled version of the Radio Cube 3, a torturous puzzle based on icosahedral geometry. It starts out innocently enough, looking like a Rubik’s Cube with a personality disorder:

radio cube 3 2 620x460magnify

But a few twists and turns later, and it’s a brain-scrambling disaster.

This evil puzzle was created by Shapeways contributor Eitan, and is a cubic transformation of a puzzle called Radiolarian 3 by Jason Smith. Radio Cube 3 looks infinitely more difficult to solve in my opinion, but I’m sure somebody out there will figure out a way to solve it quickly. You’ll notice how Eitan only shows how to scramble the cube in the video, and there’s no indication that he knows how to solve it.

If you’d like to bend your mind, you can grab the main parts needed for it for $150(USD) over on Shapeways. Then you’ll need to pick up 20 flat-head M3 screws at least 12mm long, and a set of stickers. And a sledgehammer. And a trash can.

Hyrulean Leather Journals Are a Thing of Beauty

A plain old journal is not good enough for the video game fanatic. Especially after you have laid eyes on these amazing books. These mythical journals were inspired by the Legend of Zelda games and they get all of the details pitch perfect. Just look at that dyed leather and brass.

These journals come from MilleCuirs who has an amazing eye for design. The leather is embossed with the Hylian crest, and the Triforce symbol stands out in metal. The interior pages are even dyed by hand so they look aged and the interior covers are made from hand-marbled paper.

If you’re interested in having one made for yourself, head on over to MilleCuirs’ DeviantArt page for information on custom orders.

These are so awesome I wouldn’t want to write in mine. I’d just sit there and admire it.

Make This Smokin’ Pumpkin for Halloween

Fog is a big part of any good Halloween festivities. You have to have fog. It’s the stuff ghouls and ghosts rise out of. Well if you want to have a cool fog effect for your next halloween party and don’t want to pay a lot of money, you can make a fog machine out of a pumpkin.
smoking pumpkin 620x413magnify

You only need a few items like a pumpkin, glycerine, distilled water, an aluminium ashtray or bowl, some toothpicks, air-drying clay, transparent paper, florist’s wire, some tealights and some drawing pins. You’ll carve the pumpkin, make some teeth for it. Then just follow the rest of the steps over at instructables and before you know it, you’ll have your very own pumpkin fog machine.

The finished product shown here looks pretty cool. Pumpkins look more evil with fog coming out of their mouths.

Felted Mini Star Wars AT-AT (All Terrain-Adorable Transport)

Is this not the cutest little AT-AT you’ve ever seen? Why, this little guy would never march forward to the Imperial March theme and lay waste to Rebel forces. He just wouldn’t have it in him. All of the other AT-ATs talk about trampling the rebel scum, but this guy just wants to have peace and smell some flowers. Maybe make friends with a Tauntaun or two.

He is an outcast. He’s just not like the rest. And that makes him sad. Now you see why he has his head down. This adorable AT-AT comes from Etsy artist famished and is about 5″ long and 6″ high.

He would look good sitting on your desk or shelf. I mean, he’s gonna look sad no matter what I guess, but he is cute and will look good with your other collectibles and toys. You can grab him up for $85(USD). The seller has only made two in this style so when they are gone, that’s it.

All of the other AT-ATs (and General Veers) used to last and call him names. They wouldn’t let poor felty join in any AT-AT games.

PhotoCard App: Design Postcards on Your Phone, Then Send Them in the Mail

There’s just something about getting actual mail versus email. With the former, you get to touch it, manipulate it, and pin it on your wall or stick it on your fridge for good measure. With the latter, all you can do is look at it on your computer or mobile device, and print it out, if you want an actual physical copy.

The thing is, not everyone has the time to go out and mail an actual postcard, or fire up Photoshop or Illustrator to customize their own. So for that, there’s the PhotoCard app by Bill Atkinson, who happens to have been one of the members of the original Apple Macintosh team, and developed the popular Mac applications, Hypercard and MacPaint.

photocard 2 620x401magnify

The app features a neat and easy-to-use interface that lets users create and design their very own personalized postcards that will be printed out and sent via postal mail. Users can choose to upload their own images or use the ones in the app’s image library. They can then add their personal messages and “stickers” to the card and choose to have it printed and mailed (for a small fee, of course.) For those of you who prefer things digital, you can electronically send images for free.

PhotoCard can be downloaded for free from the iTunes App Store.

Princess Leia and Han Solo Declare Their Timeless Love with Clocks

When Han and Leia are forced to be away from each other, at least they will know that each of them truly loves the other thanks to this pair of clocks proclaiming that love. Han hangs his in the Millenium Falcon, while Leia hangs hers in whatever diplomatic offices she happens to reside in.

That pair is so cute. After all of these years, they are still saying that classic line to each other – despite one of them being a scoundrel and a scruffy little nerf herder. Only now they use clocks. If you and your mate are like Leia and Han, but forced to be apart, you will want these clocks as a constant reminder.

This pair of clocks comes from Etsy seller Objectindustrialart and will cost you $25.50(USD). Not bad for two clocks that remind you of your special other.

This Lion Sculpture Is Made out of Tires: I Said Tire Iron, Not Tire Lion!

This lion sculpture is made entirely out of old shredded tires by artist Yong Ho Ji and was spotted by Redditor m1keyth while at the Beyond Limits sculpture expo in Chatsworth, UK. All I can say is that lions look awesome made from tires. I’d love to see a dragon now too.

Who knew that tire art could look this good? We should be making tire sculptures everywhere just to stop them from going to the landfills. At least we know that if this lion ever comes to life, it is going to be able to get a firm grip on you with its claws, even in the rain.

I would hate to be the guy who has to Armor All this sucker. That would be an all day job.

You can check out numerous other awesome tire sculptures over on Yong Ho Ji’s website.

Fan Made Titanfall Titan Mech Action Figure: That Was Fast

Titanfall is an upcoming online multiplayer FPS for the Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. It seems to be one of the better launch titles for the Xbox One, putting an emphasis on agility and speed while rockin’ some sweet-looking mecha. A Japanese custom toy maker appears to have the same strengths. He managed to make a replica of the game’s giant robot, even though the game isn’t out yet.

I could very well be mistaken, but I’m guessing the toy maker uses the moniker nammkkyys. What I gleaned from his blog is that he based his replica on the publicly available trailers and images of Titanfall, as well as the large Titan bust that was shown at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. What makes his feat even more impressive is that he made it from scratch; it’s not a mod of an existing action figure. I think he took a few liberties here and there, but overall he did a great job. The action figure is about 9.5″ tall, which by the toy maker’s estimate makes it a 1/30 scale replica.

Check out nammkkyys’ blog for more images of the impressive Titan action figure. Be sure to check his previous posts to see his work in progress images; those will give you a better idea of his skill and dedication. Seeing as Respawn Entertainment i.e. Titanfall’s developer itself was the one who spread the word about nammkkyys’ work, I wouldn’t be surprised if he scores a free copy of the game for his work.

Scrap Metal Predator: Scrap Metal Aliens Don’t Stand a Chance

This awesome scrap metal Predator was made by Etsy artist zMaiusz of Vietnam. It looks pretty badass and even comes with its own shoulder cannon and removable knife.

predator art 620x847magnify

It is made from all kinds of bits of scrap metal including nuts, bolts, and a spark plug. I see a lot of screws too and some pieces of bike chain. It is all welded together with a lot of detail. This guy measures 11.4″ x 8.7″ x 4″ and weighs about 3 lbs.

There are several other cool scrap metal creations available in his shop besides this Predator. There are dragons and Aliens and other cool creations. This guy is only $63(USD), and he’d look great on your desk. At least until he activates his cloaking device and runs off.

DIY Star Wars Snowflake Patterns: Use the X-Acto, Luke.

We’ve seen several different Star Wars inspired paper snowflakes surface over the years. Some of them were laser cut and others were apparently done freehand. That meant unless you had a fancy laser cutting set up or were crafty in your own right, you probably weren’t going to make these cool snowflakes yourself. Some new Star Wars snowflakes have surfaced that are made from paper that you can make yourself.

star wars snowflakes boba fettmagnify

The designs include Boba Fett, Emporer Palpatine, Nien Nunb, and Rancor as well as the AT-AT snowflake, which is my favorite. The good news here is that the designer of the snowflakes, Anthony Herrera, has offered up some patterns that you can print out and cut yourself. Of course, the prospect of all the precision cutting work makes my wrists hurt just thinking about it.

Still, if you have a sharp knife and some time on your hands, you can create your own Star Wars snowflakes with these patterns. Check out the gallery to see several of the available snowflake patterns to choose from.
