DVDs in a VHS Tape: A Present from the Past

CineFringe Film Festival is a small group based in Edinburgh dedicated to showcasing the work of independent filmmakers from around the world. They are free to enter, but they still need money to operate, which is why they turned to Kickstarter to raise funds for the next three years of their operations. To entice backers, they’re offering DVDs of the 2013 CineFringe Festival short films as rewards. They come in a very interesting packaging.

The short films of the festival are stored in two 8cm DVDs that are in turn stored in a VHS tape. The tape even has a retro paper case.

The tape has been decommissioned, but CineFringe will include a “re-commissioning kit” should you want to use the tape again.

Pledge at least £25 (~$39 USD) on Kickstarter to get this old-fashioned reward. If I were CineFringe they should go wild with their idea to get more backers. A higher pledge should get you the DVDs stored in a VHS tape stored in a Super 8 cartridge. An even higher pledge? Get the DVDs in a VHS tape in a Super 8 cartridge in a 16mm film canister. The highest pledge? How about a Blu-ray disc and digital copies of the films? And a foot massage.

These replica Spiritual Stones measure about four inches across and are cast from resin. They will look great used in your cosplay, or even just sitting on your desk. Heck, wear them with your regular clothing and see who can spot them for what they are.

These replicas are double-sided so they are completely three-dimensional. While the Goron Ruby and Zora Sapphire are identical on front and back, the Kokiri Emerald has a different pattern on the back.

You can get the set of three $150(USD) from Etsy shop The Legend of Cosplay. They also make miniatures in necklace form for just $30 each.

If Girls Were Internet Browsers

This isn’t the first time someone was inspired to design women’s fashion based on web browsers, and it probably won’t be the last.

Photographer Viktorija Pashuta wanted to combine fashion and technology and came up with this fashion editorial that’s called What If Girls Were Internet Browsers?

And combine them, she did. With the help of stylist Chalia Young, Viktorija brought her ideas and concepts to life. Apparently she wanted to bring out the functionality of each browser aside from just their colors and I think the models did a pretty good job at doing this.

For instance, Internet Explorer is flashy, Firefox sexy, Opera elegant, Chrome utilitarian and Safari – trendy/hip.

Detailed Batman Cowl Replica: Will the Real Adam West Please Stand up?

There’s cosplay and then there’s COSPLAY. If you’re serious about your costuming, and you’re into Batman, then you’ll want to start pinching your pennies now. Unless that is, you’re Bruce Wayne – then you can already afford to buy this stitch-perfect Batman cowl based on the one that Adam West wore in the 1960s TV series.

Each cowl is handmade by Williams Studio 2, and is as accurate as anything I’ve ever seen. It’s made from custom dyed Lastex, with a fiberglass shell, paint, foam, leather, and snaps to hold it in place. The pattern for this mask was made using a show-original cowl as a reference, and even the color of the eyebrow paint was Pantone-matched to the original.

Apparently, this thing is so perfect that Adam West himself owns one of these replicas. If you’d like one for yourself, you’re going to need to pony up $1,500(USD), but that’s chump change to Gotham’s number one billionaire, right? While you’re on a spending binge, why not grab an Adam West head to go with it?

Foodscapes: Complex Landscapes Constructed Entirely from Food

Think you have an infatuation with food?  Well, as always, you’ve been one-upped.  Carl Warner, artist and designer, is more of a foodie than you will ever be. He has used his computer graphics skills in combination with his physical “playing-with-food” abilities in order to construct some of the most marvelous landscapes that this planet has ever seen: foodscapes.  They make me want to close my eyes and dance with the night* for the rest of eternity, except for when I have to stop and go get more Cheetos.

Above, you can see the real life Candyland.  No, not the electronic duo, and not the wonderfully-crafted board game.  This is the real deal, folks.  There’s even a real candy-girl sitting at the bottom of that well and waiting to crawl up at you in a spider-like fashion!  (Movies… what have you done to me?)

Just think about how long it took for this man to create each of those little corn blocks, and then be amazed.  Also, think about how long it is going to take that no-legged mushroom to pull his little cart all the way along the Great Wall of China!  That’s true dedication – that’s all-natural brawn and determination.

If you would like to see more food landscapes, just head on over to Carl Warner’s website.  Otherwise, if you’re still hungry, you can always check out the iTray flying food tray and this delectable squid masterpiece.

Custom Optimus Prime Mask: Steampunks in Disguise

This awesome Optimus Prime steampunk mask is an amazing piece of art. You can wear it or just put it on a shelf. If you do wear it, it has a voice changer built in. This means awesome adult playtime coolness and fun. This mask makes Optimus a robot in disguise, who is in disguise again, with a steampunk makeover.

It may have started out as one of these cheap toy masks, but it’s pretty special now. I love the antiqued finish, and the bolt and rivet details are super nice.

Etsy seller CaptainBayley says that this mask is being offered for a limited time only. It is just $143.13(USD). That’s not a lot to ask, especially since this means that you can finally start that Steampunk Transformers movie you’ve been meaning to make.

Doctor Who Cake with Edible Characters

We’ve seen plenty of Doctor Who cakes over the years, but how many have edible characters standing around waiting to enter your mouth as they travel through time and space to your stomach?

Well, this cake has just that. Edible characters. There’s the Doctor, Rory, Amy, some Weeping Angels, Daleks and a Cyberman. Not to mention the centerpiece, a lovely, tasty TARDIS.

Girl Dressed as Doctor Who Takes on Giant Balloon Cthulhu

The headline pretty much says it all.

All I can say is thank God she’s got more than a sonic screwdriver.

Balloon Cthulhu was made by Tim Thurmond, aka The Balloon Sculptor. Check out the construction of this epic beast in the video clip below:

Wipe Your Rear Windshield with a Cat’s Tail

Normally I silently wish a moving violation on anyone I see cruising the streets of my town with stickers of any sort on their car. I harbor particular ill will for anyone with stick-figure families adorning their vehicle. However, I have found an interesting sticker that I wouldn’t mind seeing on someone’s car over at ThinkGeek.

grumpy cat1

The sticker is officially called the Moving Tail Kitty Car Decal. The name does a very nice job of describing exactly what the sticker is all about. You actually get two cat sticker bodies with one smiling and another that looks rather like Grumpy Cat.

You place the body of the kitty around the rear windshield wiper of your vehicle. You then take another sticker that matches the kitty and apply it to the windshield wiper itself. The idea is when the windshield wiper is running it looks like the kitty is wagging its tail.

Like a cat would ever be caught performing such a menial task.

You can pick the sticker kit up at ThinkGeek for $12.99 (USD).

This Game of Thrones Castle Isn’t Real, but It Should Be

The Game of Thrones opening credits are just begging to have someone build a real-world replica. Just imagine a wooden version of the keep at Winterfell as a model with moving pieces that you could buy. How awesome would that be? You could buy the buildings separately and put them all together.

game of thrones 3d model

Well, Max and Tijn Berends have made a wooden expandable castle shown in this video. Okay, not really. It’s not real. They made it look real by using Blender 3D to create a digital castle. It’s a neat trick.

Don’t get your hopes up that they will re-create the whole intro. This building took about three months to create by itself.

If you’d like to play with the model, animations and textures for yourself, you can grab the Blender 3D files here.
