Tank Vader: The Ultimate Power in the Universe

Darth Vader. He’s one of the best parts of the original Star Wars saga. What if you could turn him into a badass Sith tank and let him loose on your enemy?
Vader tank
That would be amazing. Tank Vader would just decimate whole armies and lay waste to everything in it’s path. The Vader tank is the work of Gabriel Dishaw. It is a miniature tank with the head of the Lord of the Sith riding atop it, much like Danny Trejo’s head on that turtle in Breaking Bad.

Vader tank1
It is made from all kinds of recycled parts: a toy tank, computers, typewriters, adding machines, airplane parts and vintage model pieces.

You can buy Tank Vader from Gabriel’s site for $1000(USD). Sadly my pockets are empty or else I would consider it. It just looks amazing!

Starship Enterprise Rug: Feet, the Final Frontier

I just finished a five-year mission to explore strange new worlds, and boy are my feet tired. There’s no better spot to transport your tired toes than to the surface of a Starship Enterprise rug.

starship enterprise rug 1

This Star Trek inspired rug features a large image of the original NCC-1701 as viewed from above. While it doesn’t run on dilithium crystals, that should help cut down on operating costs. It measures 71.5″ x 39.4″, is made from polyester, and has a non-skid back to keep it sliding around your floor and making you fly across your room at Warp 10.

So gather up your Federation Credits, hop in the transporter, and have Scotty beam you over to ThinkGeek – where you can pick up the NCC-1701 rug for $69.99(USD).

Make a Pinhole Camera from Concrete

While one could definitely argue that the lo-fi images you can capture with a pinhole camera are an acquired taste, it’s still pretty cool that you can capture images on film with such a simple mechanism. Now, thanks to one creative Instructables contributor, you can make your own pinhole camera from an unconventional material – concrete.

concrete camera

Photography enthusiast Amuu has devised a plan to create a camera using a block of concrete, with a hole cut in it and a wooden shutter. The process requires the creation of a mold using laminated foam boards, then pouring concrete into it to cast the body of the camera.

concrete camera mold

The inside of the concrete box is then painted black to minimize light reflections. The pinhole itself is made by punching a hole in a soda can and gluing it into an opening in the concrete (though it would be cool if you could drill a tiny pinhole through the concrete itself). A couple of small wood knobs are used to wind the film, and a plywood flap is used to open the shutter and let light through to the film.

Check out the image gallery below for a few examples of images that Ammu captured with her concrete pinhole camera:

pinhole 1 300x250
pinhole 3 300x250

Yes, they’re definitely fuzzy, distorted and gritty, but that’s what you want out of a pinhole camera, isn’t it?

Han Solo in Carbonite Fridge: An Ice Box for Tattooine

With this awesome Han Solo in carbonite fridge, Jabba can just reach inside and grab a cold brew or a chilled toad to enjoy while he watches his private dancers. It definitely beats just hanging some frozen dude on your wall.
Hanasonic Fridge

The problem of course is that, that little psycho Salacious Crumb will steal all of your popsicles and then cackle about it at your feet all day. Oh well. Obviously, this model of fridge comes from “Hanasonic”.

So when will we be able to buy our own Han Solo in carbonite fridge? Somebody needs to get to work on that now. I have a lot of nerd dollars just waiting to be spent.

3D Printed Skateboard: Print to Kickflip

3D printing has come a long way, and it’s going to go even further, when everyone can easily purchase an affordable and fast 3D printer for their homes. We’ve seen lots of intriguing items output using 3D printing tech, and now a Dutch artist created this 3D printed skateboard.

3d printed skateboard competition

Sam Abbott’s twin-tipped skateboard design was a bit too large for the 3D printer of 3DprintUK and their competition, but they managed to print it in 3 sections. The deck was assembled and joined together with numerous connector pins. The board is textured quite nicely on its underside, and there are plenty of cool details, which will make any skateboarder lust after it.

I wonder when I’ll be able to whip up something like this on a 3D printer at home. Hopefully pretty soon!

Han Solo Carbonite Ring: Jabba the Jeweler

I bet Jabba the Hutt is kicking himself right about now for failing in his diet. There is no way he could get this awesome Han Solo in Carbonite ring on even his little finger. I guess he could have one of his slaves wear it for him.
han solo carbonite ring
This ring displays a miniature Han Solo frozen in carbonite – one of the most classic moments in movie or sci-fi history. This is a design that was sketched out by Paul Bierker, a jeweler who is obviously a geek as well. I know this because he also made this.

It’s the perfect engagement ring for any Hutt who is in love and also wants to keep his trophies close by.

Attack on Titan Tea Strainer & Mug Will Eat Your Tea Bags

Japanese hobby shop ACG will be releasing this hilarious tea strainer and mug combo featuring the Colossal Titan from the popular manga and animé series Shingeki no Kyojin aka Attack on Titan aka the Game of Thrones of cartoons. Because when you’re in Attack on Titan, you die or you die.

I’m not sure how the tea strainer works. Does the tiny Colossal Titan have a compartment for tea bags or tea leaves? Or are you just going to tie the bag around it? All I know is that we should be grateful that it’s not the Armored Titan in there, because the mug isn’t going to last long against that bad dude.

Manga Generator Puts You in the Comics

As much as I think the Kinect is a cool device, I have to say I don’t play many Xbox 360 games that use it. However, this interactive concept being shown off in Japan is something I’d definitely want to try.

manga generator

Developed by the Shirai Lab at the Kanagawa Institute of Technology, Manga Generator lets you strike poses and automatically puts you into the panels of a Manga comic.

You can either jump into a pre-written story or have the Kinect sensor and custom software algorithms determine your body positions and select the appropriate backgrounds and props. When you’re done creating your personal Manga, you can print it out for posterity.

There’s no word on if or when Manga Generator will be released to the public, but one YouTube commenter said it best “BRB GOING TO JAPAN.”

MissingNYC: The Big Apple in a Bottle

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

If you used to live in the Big Apple or have an affinity for the city that never sleeps, then I have no doubt that you’ll find MissingNYC interesting. But if you don’t, then you’ll most likely think of it as junk.

New York City Nostalgia In A BottleMissingNYC was cooked up by two students from Parsons, the New School of Design in New York. It’s essentially a jar filled with random mementos of the city.

MissingNYC encapsulates a favorite neighborhood, park or landmark making it an authentic part of New York City. A token, a time capsule, a piece of trash, however you may see it, never letting go is our mission. Wherever life may take you, you’ll always have New York.

New York City Nostalgia In A Bottle1

How did Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ song describe the city again? A “concrete jungle where dreams are made” – and I’m pretty sure many out there would agree.

No two bottles are ever alike, since they are put together only after you place an order. A note listing down what’s in the bottle along with the date and the location where the items were picked up is included with the bottle.

MissingNYC is being sold on Etsy for $35(USD).

3D-Printed Animal Heads: Wireframe Wildlife

While I’m sure some of you out there really enjoy hunting, it’s not really for me. Now don’t get me wrong – I can eat meat, wear leather and shoot guns with the best of them. I just don’t really have the stomach for the hands-on killing part. So while real hunters might like animal head trophies lining their walls, I much prefer these more humane wall trophies.

3d animal head trophy 1

These 3D-printed animal heads were designed by DotSan, and come in a variety of wild animal forms, including tigers, elephants, deer, rhinos and zebras. Each one is based on an abstract 3D model of the animal’s head, deconstructed down to just its wireframe.

3d animal head trophy 3

And if you’d rather go with something even cuddlier, you could always opt for one of DotSan’s 3D-printed kitties.

3d printed kitties

The animals can be had in sizes ranging from under 3-inches-tall for around $15 to $20(USD) all the way up to a massive 20-inch-tall deer for over $1700. The mid-sized versions are the best deal, with prices around $20 to $30 for an 6-inch-tall critters and just under $40 for a 11-inch-tall sculpture. The 4-inch-tall kittehs sell for about $16 each.

You can check out DotSan’s full menagerie of 3D-printed animals over on Shapeways.
