Homemade Soapbox Starship Enterprise: To Boldly Go on Grocery Runs

I’m not sure how this flew under the radar for so long, but for the premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness, Rob Wixey showed up in this awesome soapbox Starship Enterprise.

Rob built it in his backyard in two months time. Well, he had some help from three friends. Probably named Kirk, Spock and McCoy. He built it for the Red Bull Soapbox race that will take place at London’s Alexandra Palace on Sunday, July 14.

This thing is two meters long with steel framework welded to a bike that is cut in half with inverted handlebars. That makes steering easier. It was shaped with plywood and polystyrene and coated in fiberglass, then painted. I wish I had this in my driveway – I’d use it to go on some five-hour missions to explore strange new neighborhoods, to seek out new fast food restaurants and new coffee shops.

Starry Night TARDIS Embroidery: Time and Relative Dimension in Sewing

Many fans really love the Doctor Who episode Vincent and The Doctor. People love a good historical story anyway and the episode was neat. It had the Doctor and Vincent van Gogh fighting monsters along with Amy Pond and even a special painting of Starry Night that featured the TARDIS.

This embroidered version of the Starry TARDIS was a gift to jfer007 from Greys Princess over on craftster.org. This gift giving was part of a larger craft swap in the community, but this is probably the best item of the bunch.

starry night tardis

I would so hang this on my wall. Its creator did a great job reproducing Van Gogh’s work with a TARDIS in it. I’m gonna have to get into that swap. Do you think I could get something cool if I gave them a TARDIS made out out Popsicle sticks?

Amazing Space Scene Spray Painted on Floor: I Feel the Galaxy Move Under My Feet

Do you love space? I mean, really love space? Then live in it and paint a space scene on your floor like this guy did. This just might be the coolest graffiti art installation I have seen in a long time. The floor of this house has been spray-painted to look like a galaxy.

Flooring is now the final frontier. It was created by a French team called Graffiti Decoration who specializes in making spaces look more spectacular than when they arrived. I would have to get some matching starship furniture to go with this floor.

It looks awesome, but where’s the remote? Oh, it’s in that nebula there. Damnit, where are my keys?

Tasty or Tasteless? Meat Handbags and Shoes

Fashion comes in many forms and styles. Sometimes you can see yourself wearing or using it, while other times it’ll just leave you wondering why the designer created it in the first place. When it comes to the pieces in “Burden of Excess” created by artist Andrea Hasler, I find myself gravitating towards the latter. What about you?

It’s basically a set of handbags, footwear, and accessories that look like they were crafted from raw meat.

Meat Handbag

For obvious reasons, they remind me of Lady Gaga.

The big difference is that Andrea didn’t use real meat with her creations. She used a special wax instead that resembles the appearance of meat, although the texture would most likely be different. This makes sense, since everything would spoil in a matter of hours had she used actual meat.

You might be wondering why such an unusual series is dubbed as “Burdens of Excess.” That can be easily explained by Andrea’s goal and motivation behind the collection, which was supposedly about making a statement against consumerism. I personally don’t see the connection, but maybe you can.

Would you wear this stuff? Nah, I didn’t think so, either.

This Engine Probably Has an Extra 30 Horsepower

A couple of years ago we saw a pretty sweet Scion xB that was modded as an homage to 8-bit gaming. It would’ve been more awesome if it had this engine. It’s a Honda Civic B series engine made to look like a NES controller, complete with the Konami Code at the bottom.

What I really want to see is a car with a NES controller for a steering wheel – er, steering controller.

Lightsaber Knitting Needles: for Stitch Lords

A couple of weeks ago we saw a crochet hook that looks like a lightsaber. This DIY project on the other hand gives you a knitting implement that looks like a lightsaber, except this time it also lights up. Not that you’d want to knit in the dark.

Instructables member Random_Canadian came up with the design. He used small LED flashlights as the base. He replaced the white LEDs in the flashlights with red and green, but you can pick whatever color you want. He then used acrylic rods as needles, because the rods focus and extend the light from the LEDs.

Geometric Origami Lamps: Folding Light

Many years ago – it seems like a lifetime – I used to be a theatrical lighting designer. Even though I’m not in the business any more, I’m always on the lookout for cool lighting fixtures. While digging through the recesses of Etsy, I came across a unique series of lamps from artist Roger Gano of Golden Heart Illuminations.

My personal favorite is his red and gold Dream Weaver origami table lamp shown here. The fixture has two main components. The globe is handmade from 120 interlocking origami components, constructed from translucent parchment paper held together with shoji paper and Japanese Nori glue. The base of the lamp is constructed from veneered MDF formed into a wavelike shape, and then strung with thread. The spines of the lamp are textured with sand and eight coats of acrylic paint, infused with iridescent mica particles. The finished lamp base is reminiscent of the structural composition of a suspension bridge.

It’s really a spectacular design, and definitely something your friends won’t already have in their homes. The lamp shown here is selling for $365(USD), but Golden Heart Illuminations has many other lamps, including ceiling floor and table lamps ranging in price from $55 all the way up to $825.
