Amazing Star Wars Art Records: The Empire Got its Grooves Back

When I was growing up, I must have listened to my Return of the Jedi album hundreds of times. And if I had dared to paint all over it my dad would have been pissed. Now that I have seen this awesome painted record and am no longer a child, (okay, that is debatable) I might just paint on mine too.

This Return of the Jedi painted montage is just awesome. It features Admiral Ackbar, the Rancor, an Ewok and Salacious Crumb – all painted on vinyl. This is the work of CyclopticSpider with and was done with watercolor paints of all things.  I would think watercolors would be hard to use with all of the grooves, but somehow he pulled it off. He also did Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back versions, in case Ewoks aren’t your thing.

Aluminum Signs Commemorate Star Wars Ships

You know how they have the building plaques on some ships to commemorate their construction? Every Star Trek ship has one on the bridge too. Well, even though the Star Wars ships never had these, you can buy them from Big Bay Toy Store.

star wars techplate
They’re printed on brushed aluminum, with a black box backing for hanging and a certificate of authenticity. It’s a great way to pretend that your office or living room is a Star Wars ship, even though it doesn’t look like one. Choose from the Millennium Falcon, the X-34 Landspeeder, or the T-65 X-Wing Starfighter.

star wars techplate1
Each plate is limited to 295 pieces and is available for pre-order now. They will cost you a crazy $264.99(USD) each, but they do look pretty awesome. Serious Star Wars fans will want at least one.

Puggle Stuffed Toys: Cuter than the Dog

deviantART member Callykarishokka makes very cute stuffed toys that she calls puggles. I’m not sure if she came up with the name herself or if this is a type of stuffed toy, but the name certainly fits the appearance of the toys. Most of the puggles belong in what she calls Puggleformers: adorable versions of Transformers.

The Autobot logo alone is killing me with cuteness. Cally has also made puggle versions of other geeky characters for her customers.

Sadly, Cally isn’t accepting commissions as of this writing. For now we’ll have to be content with ogling her puggles. Check out Cally’s deviantART page for more pictures.

Airfield LED Kit for Pinball Playfields: Flippin’ Awesome

Thanks to videogames, pinball has been relegated to a niche. But it still has its fans, some so addicted to the machines that they hang entire pinball playfields on their walls as decoration. Jeremy Williams and his friend invented Airfield, an LED kit that makes mounted or hung playfields come alive.

airfield pinball playfield led kit by jeremy williams

Airfield runs on a custom circuit board designed by Williams. It comes with 38 light cables – each with 2 LEDs at the end – plus all the materials you need to attach the board and cables to the rear of your playfield. Williams also commissioned an easy to use LED sequence program that you can find on his website. When you’re happy with the sequence you made, download it then install it to the Airfield via its microSD port (the Airfield kit already comes with a microSD card).

Skip to about 2:55 in the video below for another look at Airfield in action:

You can buy Airfield for $219 (USD) from Ledseq. I hope future models of the Airfield will have the option to add sound effects.

An Animated 8-Bit Re-telling of ‘Iron Man’ in 60 Seconds

Remember those 8-bit video games from yesteryear, with thier pixelized animation and primitive music and sound effects? Well, CineFix is taking inspiration from these vintage games for a new series called 8-Bit Cinema, where they’ll be retelling popular movies in sixty animated seconds of pure awesomeness.

8 Bit Iron Man

The series debuts with the original Iron Man movie. It skimps on the details but keeps all of the good stuff and retells Iron Man in a fun and compelling way – all in under a minute. You can check out the clip below:

Not only did they nail the major plot points of the movie, but it actually looks like a pretty fun game.

Air Frame Guarantees You a Window Seat

I don’t know about you, but when I travel, I always ask for a window seat. There’s just something about glancing out of the window and seeing the whole world (well, part of it anyway) extending in all directions. That’s the same feeling I get when I spend time with friends and family or when I see the photos that we took from our last get-together.

And what better frame to house those precious memories than with the Air Frame?

Air Frame

It obviously looks familiar, because it was made to look like an airplane window, only instead of being a window to the world, it’s a window to your best and most meaningful memories – assuming you’ve got them printed out in 8″x10″s.

Air Frame1

Tuck prized shots and family portraits into the Air Frame and glance out into the world that surrounds your heart when you need a break from the real world.

The Air Frame was designed by James Kim and retails for $59(USD) for one, or $119 for a set of three over at Generate, both of which are a whole lot cheaper than most airfares these days.

Pixel Art Skyline Prints: Bright Lights, 8-Bit Cities

Okay, I actually don’t know if you could have produced these images with an 8-bit system, or if you would have needed a 16-bit one, but I still love the way these retro styled cityscapes look, no matter how many bits they required.

8 bit chicago

These illustrations were created by Miles Donovan of The Daily Robot, and are currently available in Chicago, Boston and Seattle versions. They kind of remind me of the sort of thing I might have drawn with Deluxe Paint on my old Atari ST, but they were painstakingly drawn with Adobe Illustrator.

8 bit seattle

Each print measures 12-inches square, is printed on heavy cover stock and is signed by the artist. You can choose from the day time scenes shown here, or a sunset version if you’d prefer. Since they are all vector art, the images could possibly be enlarged too, though you’ll need to ask the artist if he can get them printed in bigger sizes.

3D Printed Cyvasse Set: a Game of Keeps and Mountains

Characters don’t just drink, do it and die in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels. They also play games, particularly a board game called Cyvasse. Now you can play it too, thanks to Thingiverse member A. Marston Croft and his friend Nate Stephens.

I have not read the books yet – don’t behead me! – but from what I gather, Martin has not yet laid out the rules of Cyvasse and the appearance of its pieces completely. So Croft took a few liberties here and there.

I’m sure you can forgive him if his work doesn’t live up to what you thought Cyvasse would be like, especially since Croft did all the work for you. Head to Thingiverse to download the 3D templates and the rules (pdf) for free.

Darth Malgus Cosplay: the Jaw-dropping Side of the Force

A couple of years ago we saw a Final Fantasy cosplay that looked like an action figure come to life. This Darth Malgus cosplay on the other hand doesn’t just look like a life-size toy. Even though the costume is based on the Sith lord from the Star Wars: the Old Republic MMORPG, this dude looks like he stepped out of a Star Wars movie. From the future.

darth malgus star wars costume by darth serberus

The artist behind (and inside) the costume is RPF member Darth Serberus. With the exception of the lightsaber prop, Darth Serberus designed and built the entire thing. He claims on YouTube that he has worked in the film industry for 20 years and now uses his skills for private commissions. The video below validates his claims:

Wow. I’m sure he’s a lot more imposing in person, especially since Darth Serberus is a ripped 6’6″ beast of a man. Head to Darth Serberus’ thread on RPF to read about how he made his costume, plus a bonus shot of him in a Bane costume.

Chandelier Turns Your Room into a Forest

Chandeliers add a certain flair to any room you put them in. They can be colorful or glittering with crystals, long or short, and wide or narrow, and fitted with lamps so they can aptly illuminate the room.

Forms of Nature is another chandelier, but it’s more of an art form since the light sculpture does more than just light things up when you turn it on.

Forms in Nature

Flicking that switch on will cast shadows of twisty and thorny vines and branches on your walls that looks the outline of a very creepy patch of woods. Kind of like the ones Red was running around in when she was running from her wolf of a grandmother.

Forms in Nature was created by Hilden & Diaz, which is a collaboration between artists Thyra Hilden and Pio Diaz.

Forms in Nature1

The light sculpture is described as resembling and being inspired by Darwinist Ernst Haeckel’s drawings and plots of nature. It is described by its creators as “artwork with a light source surrounded by a dense and unruly tree and root system created in minature sculpture. The forest is mirrored around it’s horizontal central axis and forms a circle 360 degrees around the light source and thereby leads one onto the notion of a real world versus an underworld.

Forms in Nature has been such a hit that Hilden & Diaz are currently working on launching a Kickstarter campaign to produce 100 pieces of the light sculpture.
