Great White Shark Made from Junk: We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Garbage Truck

I was minding my own business, strolling through the hallways of the Chicago Mini Maker Faire this weekend, when I turned a corner and came across this…

junk shark 1

Yes, it’s a great white shark, assembled from plastic cups, bags, and other discarded items. In fact, this shark is 90% post-consumer waste. You can even look inside of it to see its shark guts – though they’re not exactly anatomically accurate.

junk shark 3

Lovingly named Toothless the Great White, it was made by Deanna LaSusa-Hotchner and a team of volunteers from Discover the Depths. Deanna brings her 15-foot-long junk shark to schools, park districts, libraries and other venues to help kids learn about the delicate underwater ecosystem.

I love how the other side of the shark is made of grey linoleum. It’s perfect for conveying the thick grey skin of an actual shark. It also turns out this isn’t the only creature that Discover the Depths lugs around. Apparently, they also have a 60-foot-long inflatable whale, called Harry the Humpback, which you can actually walk inside of.

These 3D Printed Mobiles Will Blow Your Mind

For a technology that’s still largely in its infancy, you can do some things with 3D printing that are pretty much impossible with any other technique. Take, for instance, these intricate 3D-printed mobiles.

3d printed mobile 1

Designed by kinetic sculptor Marco Mahler, along with mathematician Henry Segerman, these mobiles are unlike handmade mobiles you might have seen before.

3d printed mobile 2

Each one was designed using mathematical equations to generate shapes that range from organic to highly procedural in style. The most complex of the bunch is the Quaternary Tree (Level 6), which has a whopping 1,365 parts. Each model was then output using one of Shapeways’ industrial laser-sintering 3D printers.

Best of all, you can order a variety of these mobiles for yourself over at Shapeways. Since each one is made to order, it’ll take about 1 to 2 weeks to generate and then ship yours. Prices range from $10 (USD) for a small, simple mobile up to $600 for the most complex design.

It still blows my mind that a single 3D printing session can generate complex forms like these in which individual parts come out as separate, moveable objects.

Cross Stitched Pokédex: for Cataloging Textile Pokémon

Last year I called Linda’s impressive cross-stitch project the “textile Pokédex.” I was wrong. This cute bundle of thread made by Sprite Stitch member Lord Libidan is the actual textile Pokédex. Linda deserves to own a copy of this. It sure beats getting a cross-stitched diploma.

Lord Libidan says he based his creation on the generation 1 Pokédex and gave it “animé accurate colors.” It’s a shame it doesn’t have animé accurate functions.

Nintendo should consider releasing an actual Pokédex. Even if it’s just a glorified media player that only contained information on Pokémon, I’m pretty sure they’d sell millions.

Girls Won’t Be Able to Resist this Rainbow Resistor Bracelet

It’s been a while since I did any serious circuit board hacking, but back in the day I saw my share of electronic components. One of my favorite parts was always the resistor – not because of its rudimentary electrical properties – but because its value could always be identified through a convenient color-coding scheme. In fact, I think at some point I had actually memorized a resistor color chart. Of course, now my mind is feeble, and I couldn’t tell the difference between a 22 ohm and a 2200 ohm. While I don’t personally wear bracelets, I’m still highly compelled by this nifty bracelet made from colorful resistors.

resistor bracelet 1

Artist Megan Nissen of Techcycled carefully selects resistors and assembles these nifty “ladder” style bracelets which have a rainbow of resistor colors. While the bracelets are definitely geeky, they’re also elegant, with sparkly Swarovski crystals and finished with a nice silver toggle clasp to hold it on your wrist.

The Rainbow Resistor Bracelet sells for $125(USD) over on Etsy. While you’re over there, be sure to check out Techcycled complete collection of  jewelry fabricated from recycled electronic components and wires.

Resistance is futile. There, I said it.

Warhammer 40K Blood Angels Costume: Don’t Mess with the Space Marines

I’m not a fan of Warhammer 40,000 myself, but this Blood Angels Space Marine costume looks so awesome, I want to check it out and see what I have been missing. Youtuber Pilerud scratch built this Warhammer 40K Space Marine Blood Angel Tactical Sergeant, 7th company, 9th squad, costume himself.

He obviously loves Warhammer, having devoted 400 hours over 10 months to making this badass costume. The completed outfit weighs 25kg (~55 pounds) and stands about 215 cm tall (~7 feet). I am about 183 cm without armor. He used foam and hot glue and as well as other tricks to make it look more like the miniatures. Mech sounds are provided by ThinkGeek’s awesome little Mega Stomp Panic box. Check it out in action in the video below:

The cost? About €2500 (~$3206 USD) I love how everything moves as he is walking around. It’s all very fluid. Nice job!

3D Printed Google Glass Frame: No One Will Know the Difference

If Google Glass takes off, I think that it’s going to be a status symbol miles above any (current) gadget. The reason is obvious: the damned thing sits on your face, fully visible for everyone to see/want/hate. If you want to get on the hype train early – or if you want to try and build your own wearable computer – you can 3D print this unofficial 3D model of Google Glass’ frame.

The 3D model was made by Sunny Gao, shown above wearing the resulting 3D printed frame.

Gao uploaded the template as a Google SketchUp file; you can download it from his Baidu account if you wish. Now practice saying, “Okay Glass… damn it’s out of battery”, and you’re good to go.

Mars Curiosity Rover Wood Model: Curious Why I Don’t Have This on My Desk Yet

While most of us will never get to visit the red and dusty surface of Mars, we have been afforded the ability to get a first-hand view of the planet, courtesy of NASA’s Curiosity Rover. And while we’ll never get a chance to see the Curiosity itself up close and personal, you can now have your own mini-Rover on your desktop.

Designer Arnold Patrick Martin created this awesome model of the Curiosity Rover using 120 individual pieces cut not with a scroll saw. It’s made from 1/8″ MDF plywood, and measures about 10″ long. It ships in several easily assembled sections to ensure that it doesn’t get broken in shipment.

Best of all, you can get this without spending billions on a space program to launch you to Mars. All you need is $150(USD) and the ability to click this link.

Pixar Engagement Ring Boxes: Will You Animate Me?

Pixar fans who want to tie the knot really should have something like these awesome engagement ring boxes to help seal the deal. You want to make sure they say yes after all – and every little bit helps. You can’t ask a girl to marry based on just your dashing good looks and knowledge of every Star Trek episode, right?

3D-Printed Wedges Have an iPhone Case on Their Heels

3D printing is changing how people make and build things these days. From printed guns to gowns, the sky’s the limit when it comes to 3D printing. This, you can clearly see, with the shoes that Alan Nguyen of Freedom of Creation has come up with using 3D printing technology.

3D printed designer shoe

The iPhone Mashup Shoe features an overlapping strap with an intricate heel that has its very own iPhone case. You can slip your smartphone snugly into the case so you can carry it with you wherever you’re headed in the most unconventional way possible. Each shoe comes with its own iPhone case, so you can carry up to two phones at a time.

3D printed designer shoe1

While they look kind of cool, it’s not a very sensible design, since your phone will probably be worse for wear after a short while. But while the wedges won’t be so gentle on your iPhone, at least they’ll be kind to your feet.

The iPhone Mashup Shoe was exhibited last year at Milan Design Week and Maison et Objet Paris.

Nguyen explained: “They actually work. I heard they’re pretty comfortable but I haven’t tried them myself.”

Bioshock Infinite Songbird Gets Cute, Cuddly and Plush

The Songbird in BioShock Infinite is one intimidating character. So it was only a matter of time before somebody tried to tone it down a little bit and make him/her/it a bit more family-friendly.

plush bioshock songbird

While this version of the Songbird doesn’t have light-up eyes, it more than makes up for it by being soft and cuddly. It was made by Cherry Kiss with a body of hand-stitched microsuede, and has handmade clay buttons, and hand-painted details.

While it’s not as massive as the one in the game, this Songbird is still much bigger than the collectible version that comes with the Ultimate Songbird Edition, measuring in at 12-inches-tall, with a 20-inch wingspan.
