Mega Man Unlimited Fan Game: Hold on to Your Heart Tank

It’s been quite a while since Capcom released an official Mega Man game; even its 25th anniversary gift to fans Street Fighter x Mega Man was mostly made by a fan. So forget about doing something right; it seems that if Mega Man fans want something done at all, they have to do it themselves. That’s what Philippe “MegaPhilX” Poulin and his friends are trying to accomplish with Mega Man Unlimited.

According to a Destructoid article from last year, MegaPhilX initially came up with Mega Man Unlimited just to join an animation contest sponsored by Capcom-Unity. When he decided to go ahead and make it a full game, he intended it to embody his ideas of what Mega Man 10 should be like, since the game had not yet been released at the time. MegaPhilX says that the design for Mega Man Unlimited was influenced by Mega Man 9 and 3.

MegaPhilX and five of his friends – Kevvviiinnn, ThunderThouin, Gabriel, Jocelyn and Jansim – have been working on the game for several years now and Mega Man Unlimited is finally in alpha stage. Let’s cut them some slack though, it’s not like programming this game is their full-time gig.

Here’s the latest trailer for the game:

And here’s its debut trailer, which MegaPhilX uploaded last year. It lays out the plot of the game and also shows gameplay footage:

MegaPhilX can’t say when they’ll be finished with the game, only that it will be released as a standalone PC app with support for both keyboards and game pads. Keep an eye on the Mega Man Unlimited website and Facebook page for updates on the game.

Champagne Cork Darth Vader: Let’s Toast to the Dark Side

The thing I love about the intersection of geekdom and art is that we end up with some really ingenious and non-traditional mediums for creativity. For example, what was once an innocent champagne cork has been transformed into the ultimate evil – Darth Vader.

DIYer SJ Roth took an ordinary cork and embellished it with markers, clay, fabric, foam rubber, and even a little LED lightsaber to create the cutest little Vader you’ll see today.

You can learn how to make your own Cork Vader over on Instructables. And while you’re over there, be sure to check out SJ’s Mario CorkyEzio Auditore Corky, and Iron Man Corky.

3D Printers Now Available via Staples: Print Me an Easy Button!

3D printing is a fantastic way to rapidly prototype something that you’re trying to design or develop for business or personal use. The problem is that 3D printers can be pretty expensive, and you can’t just walk into most retailers and buy one. That is all about to change with office supply retailer Staples announcing that it now has 3D printers available directly from its website. The company says that some Staples locations will also have 3D printers in their store by the end of June.

staples 3d

The printers that are available at Staples come from a company called 3D Systems. The printers are Cubify’s Cube 3D Printers and are available for $1299.99(USD).

The printers are ready to work right out of the box and support Wi-Fi for wireless printing. The printers will work on Windows or Mac computers and come with 25 free 3-D templates designed by professional artists. Additional templates are available online and designers can create their own templates to print from the printer. The Cube printer is able to print items up to 5.5 x 5.5 x 5.5″ and has cartridges available with 16 different colors. Staples is selling these ABS and PLA plastic cartridge refills for $49.99 each.

Q*Bert Playable Diorama: What the !@$%!^?

As iconic as Q*Bert was back in the 1980s, it was also one of the most difficult and frustrating arcade games I ever played. I never was able to master it, though I’ve done a little better playing it on MAME – without the fear of going broke feeding the machine with quarters. That said, I’m pretty sure I could beat this version of the game.

qbert diorama

What you’re looking at here is a 7-inch-tall handmade Q*Bert diorama, complete with wooden cubes and clay versions of Q*Bert and Coily the snake to play with. It also comes with a glass bead (jelly monster) and a couple of those colorful flying discs mounted by the sides of the cubes. Though they don’t actually fly.

Artist Evan Gothelf of Gothelf Bros. Studios handmakes these nifty retro dioramas, and sells them over on Etsy. They go for $45.99(USD) each, and you can choose from a couple of different color schemes. You can also order additional characters if you prefer to take your game board to a higher level.

It sure would be cool if they made a whole series of retro arcade dioramas.

Tenor Rupee Ocarina: Play it, Don’t Spend It

If you want a good Ocarina, it can cost you a lot of rupees, but this particular Ocarina happens to resemble a rupee. Pretty sweet. And no pots were smashed to unearth it.

Ocarina

This tenor Rupee ocarina has 6 holes and plays in the C-major key. It measures about 3-inches-long and has a range of 10 notes, including sharps and flats.

I know, it’s pretty cool. What you really want to know is, how much does it cost? That would be $22(USD) and it comes with a neck strap and a fingering chart to help you learn your favorite Zelda songs.

Just be careful you don’t spend it by accident.

Awesome Homemade Transformers Costume: Geek in Disguise

This beast is the latest creation from Marksprojects. He made this amazingly kick-ass “Bolt” costume inspired by the Transformers movies. This thing is completely insane. The way it lights up, the way it moves – he looks like a serious movie mech inside of it.

Transformers Costume
It doesn’t actually transform into anything, but who cares? The eyes and mouth parts even move, the mask slides up and down automatically, and it has some jetpack smoke effects too. If you want to play with it from the outside, the arms can be moved via remote control. Check it out in action…

Yeah, I know the video has no sound, but that doesn’t make the costume any less epic. Just add your own soundtrack. Or just try this.

I feel a great disturbance in the Force. It’s as if every Transformers fan has just peed in their pants.

Iron Man Chalkboard Art: Tony Stark? More Like Tony Chalk

How is your break room at work? Pretty sucky right? I bet it could use some art. And not that overpriced commercial stuff from some stuffy gallery, or worse yet, so stupid motivational posters. What your break room needs is something like this chalk drawing of Iron Man and Tony Stark looking through his HUD.

iron man chalkboard

This awesome chalk art was spotted by the father of 14-year-old Young-Avenger-Wiccan along with the note “Look at our chalkboard in the break room!”

It’s awesome that it is in a place where it can be appreciated. It’s also awesome that they happened to have a ton of chalk and an amazing artist on staff. Whoever drew this, come forth! You deserve all the credit in the world.

Avengers Cookies: Assemble (in My Tummy!)

I’m a sucker for sweets, so any time you combine my love for geeky stuff with my love for sugary stuff, you know you’re in trouble. For example, these Avengers inspired cookies are right up my alley.

iron man cookie

They were made by tumblr bakr Fanfectionary, and represent some of my favorite Avengers, including Tony Stark (with and without Iron Man armor), Black Widow, and Captain America.

She also made a Loki Cooki (I had to say it) in case the Avengers cookies get bored and need some evil to battle.

No word on when she’ll assemble a batch of Thor, Hulk or Nick Fury cookies.

Magikarp Swallows Nintendo DS, Sony PSP

If you’re a Pokémon fan, you probably are familiar with the Magikarp – or as is known in many circles, the Magicrap. Despite being arguably the most useless Pokémon, the orange fish is still one of the most popular characters in the series. So what better way to show your allegiance to the splashy Magikarp but to carry around your handheld gaming system inside of one.

magikarp case

Flea Circus Designs‘ interpretation of the Magikarp is definitely a bit more rectangular than we’re used to seeing, but they had to make it that way so it could stand a chance at holding onto a game system. It’s made from fleece and felt, and is big enough to hold onto a Nintendo DS, DS Lite, 3DS or a Sony PSP. It’ll also gobble up most cell phones and small digicams. Magikarp’s mouth is also lined with Velcro to make sure that it doesn’t accidentally spit your gadget out.

Cast your rod and reel in the Magikarp case over on Etsy for $25(USD).

Lord of the Rings Guitar Illustrated with Sharpies

In the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair… It was this guitar. My precious. Gollum took it away and it really ticked me off too because, look at all that amazing Sharpie-work.

lotr guitar 1

This Lord of the Rings guitar is amazingly detailed. And yes, that artwork is all done with various Sharpie permanent markers. It has depictions of Barad-dûr, Nazgûl, Minas Tirith, massive Oliphaunts and more. It was made by Vivian Xiao and took her about 25 hours to complete.

Vivian did an amazing job. Now I assume she will wander the countryside strumming while singing tales about The One Ring.
