Cell Cake: Dibs on the Nucleus

deviantART contributor/artist/bakologist Nicole William not only has two first names for a name, she’s also great at baking. Here’s a fondant cake she made for one of her biology classes three years ago. It’s a cross-section of an animal cell, complete with labels of its parts.

Mmmm… Giant edible animal cell.

I’m guessing whoever matched the label correctly got to eat the corresponding part.

Guy Masters Universe, Builds Giant Skeletor Action Figure Replica

If you are a He-Man fan who finds the 80′s action figures just a little too small, check this out. Oh and clear some floor space if you want to make one of these yourself. This is a giant replica of the Skeletor action figure, no doubt made by the power of Grayskull.

skeletor
This giant action figure was made by Diego D. Gonzalez of DDG Colecciones. I guess the standard action figure size wasn’t big enough. Skeletor even has his staff accessory, which has been super-sized as well.

Here are some images and video documenting the build…

Boy that stand being used to hold Skeletor up during construction doesn’t look too comfortable.

You can check out more images from the build here if you want to try making one for yourself. Good luck with all that.

Excelsior Starship Watch Concept: It’s Federation Time

Whether you’re a Trekkie, a Trekker, or just a Star Trek fan, you’ll love this watch design that’s inspired by a Federation starship.

Watch designer Peter Fletcher’s latest concept design arrives just in time for the release of Star Trek: Into Darkness, though I doubt it’ll be available to wear in time for the movie’s premiere in less than three weeks.

starship excelsior watch

The Excelsior watch features an analog dial which resembles the upper saucer of a Federation starship. Time is displayed on two rotating discs (one with hours, the other with minutes), which appear in a window at the back of the LED illuminated saucer.

The typeface on the dials has a decidedly science-fiction-y look to it, which could also be replaced with Klingon numbers for a more cryptic look. Since the watch features a simple analog dial mechanism, it shouldn’t be too difficult to produce either.

While the watch isn’t official Federation issue, I’d be proud to wear on the bridge of my own starship.

Peter has submitted his watch design to TokyoFlash for consideration, and I’m hopeful that it will eventually be produced.

Halo Game for the Atari 2600 Released in Cartridge Form: Combat Devolved

Back in 2010, Ed Fries – former Vice-President of Game Publishing in Microsoft and one of the co-creators of the Xbox – created a “demake” of Halo for the Atari 2600 called Halo 2600 (Fries also talked about how the project came about on the linked page). Previously Halo 2600 was playable on PCs using an emulator or via its Flash port, but now the game is out as a legit Atari 2600 cartridge.

Here’s some gameplay footage of Halo 2600 courtesy of YouTuber dsdude1107:

Atari Age worked with Fries to release a cartridge version of the game. The first batch of cartridges were sold in a limited run in 2010, but they seem to be back in stock. You can order them from Atari Age for $50 (USD) each.

That’s pretty expensive, but at least each cartridge comes with a glossy label, a box and even a full color 8-page manual, all of which feature art that are waaaay better than how the game itself looks. Seriously kids, if you think the videogame trailers are misleading, imagine the crushing disappointment some of us suffered back in the day.

Naoki Ono’s Awesome Canvas Furniture Portraits Double as Actual Furniture

What good is a portrait of a chair when your legs are weary and are in need of rest? Tons of good, apparently, if it happens to be one of the portraits by YOY. That’s because aside from being a striking piece of art, each painted seat doubles as an actual piece of furniture.

Canvas Wall Chair

Stare at it, marvel at its beauty, and then remove it from its frame, prop it against a wall, and take a seat.

Canvas Wall Chair1

‘Canvas’ was unveiled at Salon Satellite at Milan Design Week 2013 earlier this month, where the two-dimensional lightweight furniture is still on display. Obviously the chairs won’t be ideal for long periods of time, but I think they’ll be fine if you just need a moment or two of rest.

‘Canvas’ was designed by spatial designer Naoki Ono, who is the founder of Tokyo-based YOY design studio.

Custom Star Trek Transformer Action Figure: Enterprise, Roll Out!

Artist TJ Wilferd aka Unicron9 loves making custom action figures. Last year he boldly went and took Star Trek where the franchise hasn’t gone before – to the world of Transformers. He made an action figure that he calls Autobot E, a robot whose vehicle mode is the Starship Enterprise.

To take his creation to the next level, Wilferd even wrote a brief origin story for Autobot E. Capt. Picard and his crew were taking out the remnants of the Borg when they pick up a strange metal relic from one of the Borg’s ships. The relic then proceeds to take over the Enterprise and upgrades the ship. Eventually it directs the crew to Cybertron, which was being attacked by the Borg. A beatdown ensues and the adult Power Rangers win the day. I would love to see an animated short of that.

‘My Knitted Boyfriend’: At Least This Guy Won’t Open His Big Mouth

Being single can suck, especially when all of your friends already have plus one’s. Artist Noortje de Keijzer found a way around this not by joining online dating sites or by going on blind dates, but by knitting her own boyfriend.

Yes, you read that right: she knitted one.

Knitted Boyfriend

Obviously, she doesn’t have Geppetto’s power, so her knitted boyfriend isn’t alive. But since it’s actually a cushy bodysuit, any guy can wear it and make the suit come alive – or better yet, it can just be filled with stuffing if you’d prefer the strong and silent type.

Knitted Boyfriend1

So far, Noortje has knitted two boyfriends: Arthur, who was born knitted on September 14, 2009, has white skin, dark brown hair and black knickers; while Steve, born knitted on September 27, 2011, has dark brown skin, black hair and beige knickers.

How’s that for a kooky graduation project?

Playable Video Game Paintings Come to Life

I love a good art exhibit as much as the next guy, but sometimes it can get a little boring just staring at all the static paintings on the walls – never mind the humiliation of getting chastised by the museum security for standing to close to them, like what happened to me a MoMA a couple of months back.

for projection mapped video game

These unique paintings not only are more visually stimulating than most, but are interactive. Created by Brent Watanabe, For(){}; is an installation of paintings which let you play video games on them.

The acrylic paintings simply serve as projection surfaces for the retro-style games, while passersby can play a quirky, custom video game using an old-school NES controller. Brent used Flash and the Box2D physics engine to create the game. The gameplay is described as follows:

“There is no beginning or end to the game, just collecting and wandering, birthing and consuming, an arbitrary point system rising until your inevitable death and the birth of another generation. It is a game mechanism without the game. An addictive but essentially aimless experience.”

Check it out in action in the video below:

I don’t know about you, but I’d spend a lot more time at art galleries and museums if this was the kind of stuff hanging on the walls.

LEGO Evangelion Unit-01: You Can (Not) Top This

We’ve seen the father of this LEGO mech hybrid; now it’s time to meet its mother. It’s a scale model of Evangelion Unit-01 from the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. Eva Launch!

Japanese LEGO enthusiast Moko says it took him three years to complete this masterpiece. The figure stands nearly 4′ tall and weighs almost 21lbs. Its torso is just a tad too bulky, but honestly I didn’t think you could make something this slim and articulated using LEGO pieces. It even has proper joints! Plus the colors are spot on.

The Great Disney Princesses Slothy Crossover

‘Sloth’ is defined as a person having a ‘reluctance to work or make an effort.’ It could also be referring to the ‘slow-moving tropical American mammal that hangs upside down from tree branches.’

Seemingly combining these two definitions is artist Phillip Light with his unique series which crosses the great Disney Princesses over with the ever-lovable sloth. Of course, this statement is only valid if you make the assumption that the princesses do nothing but laze around their palaces all day while being waited upon on hand and foot.

Disney Sloth

Aside from the illustrations being extremely adorable, Philip has creatively dubbed each with a unique but distinctly slothy princess name. Take, for example, Snow Sloth.
