Nike LunarENDOR Quickstrike Snowboard Boot: Lights on!

There have been only a few Nike shoes with LEDs, but these snowboard boots take the top prize, thanks to 30 LEDs implanted into the swoosh on each boot. You definitely won’t be invisible on your next night run down the slopes.

The Nike LunarENDOR Quickstrike Snowboard boot is powered by a built-in lithium ion battery, that’s controlled by a power button in the boot’s cuff. The boot comes with Lunarlon foam to improve the plushness of your ride. There’s a customizable flex line system, allowing you to choose between three levels of stiffness.

As you’d expect, all of this tech doesn’t come cheap. The regular LunarENDOR boots sell for $430(USD), so I can only imagine how much the Quickstrike LED model will sell for.

Dragons Made from Circuit Boards (aka Motherboard of Dragons)

I may be a nerd, but it just seems like circuit boards make everything better. They are all shiny and full of circuits. And when you make dragons from old circuit boards, they look pretty amazing. They probably breathe electricity rather than fire.

These cool dragons were made by Amanda aka TheblueKraken. Each dragon has been made into brooches, necklaces or business card holders that have gleaming (artificial) opals for eyes. She handcuts each circuit board, removes all of the extraneous elements, and then polishes and seals them in clear coat before assembling them with rivets.

I love how she used different circuit boards for the wings, adding some depth. And check out this design – it’s a red dragon necklace, made from a less common red circuit board and hesonite garnets.

These and other cool designs are available over at TheBlueKraken’s ArtFire shop.

I pity the knight who goes up against these dragons. Electricity and armor don’t mix.

Kisai Rorschach ePaper Watch: Blot O’clock

The Kisai Rorschach is the newest watch from Tokyoflash, maker of timepieces that are intentionally bad at presenting the time. The display looks similar to the ink blots used in the eponymous test, but it’s actually easy to decipher. The top right shows the hour and the bottom left shows the minutes. The other two symbols are just mirror images.

The watch has three difficulty modes. Why? Because Tokyoflash. From what I can tell changing the difficulty doesn’t change how you read the display, it just switches to hard-to-read symbols for the numbers. The date and alarm settings are also displayed in the same manner.

Because the watch uses an ePaper display, Tokyoflash added a power-saving sleep mode to the watch.  As you may know an ePaper or e-ink display does not consume power if it’s just showing a static image. So in sleep mode the watch will only display one symbol, which will be different depending on what day it is.

Tokyoflash even made a fan video to promote the watch, starring none other than The Watchmen‘s Rorschach. Is it still a fan video if you’re promoting a product? Hmmm.

I wish they didn’t use such a tacky font to print “Rorschach” on the display. Other than that I think it’s a neat design. You can order the watch from Tokyoflash for $179 (USD).

Lego Minifig Mittens Are Also Good for Robots

LEGO Minifig Hand Syndrome, or LMHS. It’s a common problem that afflicts many of us. It comes from playing with LEGO for too many hours straight. Your hand begins to cramp and before you know it, you have a LEGO minifig hand. But don’t worry. Despite your ability to grasp things like a robot, and your limited ability to do anything involving fingers, there is a glove for you.

These LEGO minifig mittens are perfect. They were made by Carissa, a crafter in Dallas. They are obviously inspired by the hands of LEGO minifigs. They will keep you warm and are also perfect for LEGO cosplay.

Don’t let LMHS slow you down. Wear these mittens. You can find the complete pattern here.

Voltron Deluxe Hoodie: And I’ll Form the Hood!

Defend the universe with this badass hoodie from 80s Tees, featuring three fifths of the Lion Force Voltron squad in their proper positions. The only thing I don’t like about it is that Keith’s Black Lion looks a bit depressed in this hoodie. A matching pair of Blue Lion and Yellow Lion sweatpants and slippers would probably cheer him up.

While you can’t disassemble the hoodie into three cuddly lions, the Black Lion’s jaw is detachable for practical purposes.

You can order the Voltron Deluxe Costume Hoodie from 80s Tees for $160 (USD). The store also has a version of the hoodie without the lion heads, although why you’d want that over this one is beyond me.

Game Boy Color Costume Actually Plays Game Boy Advance Games: Tricky Treat

Back in 2009 we saw a dude who went as a playable Game Boy for Halloween. This year YouTuber MikeHandidate went as an updated version: a Game Boy Color. Perhaps realizing how awkward it would be to have the handheld’s buttons on his body, he chose to place the controls on his hands. Oh wait.

game boy color costume by MikeHandidatemagnify

Even though it’s not very polished in terms of appearance, I’m still impressed with Mike’s costume. But eagle-eyed Nintendo fans will dock him a few points, and not because it looks like a fifth grader cut and pasted most of his costume. It’s because he chose to run a Game Boy Advance game – I think it’s Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen –  on his costume. Mike said it’s because the screen on his costume has a 16:10 aspect ratio, so he thought a Game Boy Advance game would look better on it compared to a stretched out Game Boy Color game.

Now that’s a handheld game console.

Alien Chestburster Macarons: Get in Me Belly (or Maybe Not)

One of the most memorable scenes in the history of science fiction has to be the John Hurt chestburster scene in the original Alien. It’s just the right blend of tension, suspense, and gross-out effects to be ranked up there at the top of list.

And while the crew of the Nostromo didn’t intentionally gestate aliens in their bellies, you now have the option to, thanks to these chestburster French macarons.

These delightfully nasty looking treats were made by Lou Lou P’s Delights, and while they look completely gross, they probably taste pretty awesome. That’s how the aliens lure you in to carrying their offspring, you see. While they look quite bloody, I bet that’s raspberry. Yum.

In addition to the chestburster, Lou Lou made some aliens in other states of their development, including facehugger and fully grown. Delightful.

Heavy Metal Fashion: Dresses Sculpted Using Magnets and Iron

Designers are constantly pushing the envelope when it comes to the materials they’re using for their designs. Artist Jolan Van der Wiel and designer Iris Van Herpen certainly did when they collaborated to create a collection of dresses made using iron and magnets.

iron dress 3 620x929magnify

The duo designed the pieces by using the material’s magnetic property, moving and shaping a composite of iron filings and molten plastic using a tool with very strong magnets embedded within.

The entire process is a lot more complicated than it sounds, and that fact is certainly backed by the results. The dresses don’t look that comfortable to wear, but each one is probably the only one of its kind in the entire world.

The dresses were unveiled recently at Dutch Design Week. What do you think?

California Driver Gets Traffic Ticket for Wearing Google Glass

A San Diego driver was cruising down the street recently wearing her Google Glass Explorer headset and was pulled over by the police. The woman, Cecilia Abadie, was primarily pulled over for going 80 in a 65mph zone, but the California Highway Patrol officer also issued her a citation for wearing the Google Glass device.

google glass ticketmagnify

The citation she was issued is typically given to drivers who could be distracted by a video or TV screen inside the vehicle. Google Glass is supposed to be a wearable device that makes it easy to stay connected to your smartphone for navigation and other needs while keeping your eyes on the world around you. So in theory, you’re less distracted using Google Glass than looking at the screen on your car’s nav unit.

Abadie says that while her Google Glasses were on her face, she wasn’t using them at the time she was pulled over. Abadie says that she will seek legal counsel to consider fighting that portion of the ticket.

This definitely brings to light the behaviors and laws which might need to adapt as wearable technology becomes more pervasive.
