Project Subway: Fast Food Fashion

Whoever said fashion and couture must be made from expensive and exotic textiles obviously haven’t laid their eyes on Subway’s newest creative marketing strategy: Project Subway. It spoofs the fashion designer reality TV show, Project Runway, and tasked contestants to come up with the best and most creative fashion designs using Subway sandwich wrappers, napkins and other packaging as their materials.

Four designers competed, and designer Danilo Gabrielli emerged victorious. It reportedly took Danilo 14 hours, spread over two weeks, to create the two Subway couture dresses that he submitted for the competition.

The campaign was launched by Subway in an attempt to encourage people to try one of their sandwiches during their September “SUBtember” footlong promotion. The cool part? Project Subway was actually a part of New York Fashion Week.

SOOT Electropack: Never Run out of Juice

Having lots of devices can be fun, but it’s a pain when you run out of juice. I’ve had to scramble to find a power plug more than once, and the external battery that I have usually doesn’t last that long. Lugging around a large battery in your backpack makes sense if you’re heading outdoors.

The SOOT Electropack is supposed to be able to power your devices for up to two weeks without having to plug it in. Now that’s what I call self-sufficiency. The bag is made up of three modular bags, which can be combined to suit your needs.

Each one contains a 10,000 mAh battery. The pack can charge up to four devices at once, from smartphones to tablets. A single battery pack can charge a typical smartphone up to seven times, or an iPad once. Get the version with an extra battery pack to double that for up to two weeks of capacity for your smartphone.

The SOOT Electropack has got 34L of storage, so you can still lug around a lot of gear while keeping your devices fully juiced up. It was launched as Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, which ends on October 17th. You’ll have to pledge at least $239(USD) with one battery pack. $279 will buy you a the version with the extra battery pack.

Star Wars Skinny Ties: The Hipsters Strike Back

I must confess something. One of the reasons I work for myself is so I never have to wear a tie to work again. Even if ties can be hip, I just can’t stand having that noose tied around my neck all day. But if I’m ever forced to wear one at a fancy dinner or meeting, I choose these.

star wars ties

What’s cool about these Star Wars-inspired skinny ties is that they’re really quite stylish. Some of the ties offer subtle embellishments of R2-D2 or C-3PO, while others replace polkadots with the Death Star, the Imperial seal, and an exploding Alderaan. I also like the little stormtroopers hidden in the Madras plaid.

Perhaps the most obviously geeky design is the black tie with Darth Vader on it. This tie means business. Wear it the next time you have serious negotiating to do, and the other party will relent immediately for fear you will use the Force Choke on them.

There’s no word on when you’ll be able to purchase these ties stateside, but they’re already available in Japan from Kotobukiya for ¥5,040 (~$51 USD) each. I only have one question: why no TIE fighter? That seems like an obvious choice.

Wearable Mosquito Nets Look Silly, But They’ll Keep the Bugs Away

Did you know that mosquitoes inject an anesthetic into your skin, so you won’t feel a thing when they finally take that bite? When that wears off, the itching and wave upon wave of annoyance begins. That aside, mosquitoes are carriers of a multitude of diseases, too.

If you’re not a huge fan of bug sprays and insect repellent lotions, then you might consider wearing a mosquito net instead.

It may look silly, but this might just be the answer to your insect and bug bite woes. You can wear this mosquito net over your clothes, and it’s extremely breathable, so you don’t have to worry about feeling all stuffy during the summer. The 1.2-mm netting looks fine, but rest assured they’ll still allow the breeze to pass through while block off mosquitoes, insects, and other bugs. If you’re wearing shorts, you also might want to invest in a pair of mosquito net pants to round out your outfit.

The Wearable Mosquito Net goes for $34.95(USD) while the Mosquito net Pants sell for $29.95 over at Hammacher Schlemmer for $29.95(USD).

Socks of Catan: A Game Is Afoot

People really seem to go crazy for the Settlers of Catan game. It is a fun game, but how big of a fan are you? Are you willing to wear socks with hexagonal land tiles printed all over them?

Well, if that makes you happy, that is a thing now. In partnership with the creators of Settlers of Catan, Betabrand has created socks designed to look like the board game. They are appropriately called “Socks of Catan.”

Pre-order them now from Betabrand for $14(USD) and they will ship this October. You don’t even have to trade in any sheep cards to get them.

Playstation Button Earrings: Lobe Combo!

These Playstation button earrings are perfect for the gamer girl who prefers Sony’s consoles over Microsoft’s. With this set of four earrings you can wear them in any button combination pair you want. Or if you have the extra piercings, wear all four at once.

I have to say though, if I saw these on a girl that I know, I would have a hard time not pushing those buttons and annoying her. Countless hours of Playstation gaming have conditioned me to want to press on those symbols and see what happens.

They would make a great gift. You can find them at resetbuttons Etsy shop for just $20(USD). Xbox and Wii fans, no need to feel left out. Resetbuttons has got you covered.

A Stud on a Stud: Ryan Gosling Earrings

Ryan Gosling’s a good actor. That and the fact that he looks better than average means he’s got legions of women and even men swooning over him. Ryan’s also has a huge presence on the Internet. He was the subject of a meme recently – remember the Ryan Gosling won’t eat his cereal meme?

Then there was the Chrome extension called “Hey Girl”, which basically replaces every image on a web page with one of Ryan Gosling when it’s installed. Back in the real world, Ryan is still as popular as ever. Why, he’s even inspired some people to create earrings featuring his mug with his trademark smirk on them.

The Ryan Gosling stud earrings are available from Fred Flare for $16(USD). They’re relatively simple, so if you’re not willing to fork over the cash, then I’m sure you can make your own easily.

If Batman Wore Scalemaille

Over the years Batman’s suit has ranged from a form-fitting nylon leotard to lightweight carbon composites. But if Batman dwelled in medieval times, I bet he’d have worn something like this.

scalemaille batman 1

This scalemaille armor Batsuit was handmade by Creations by Christopher. The body is made from almost 27,000 individual stainless steel rings, 4,500 large anodized aluminum scales, and another 3,000 small ones.

scalemaille batman 2

The armor weighs in at about 60 pounds, and includes not only the upper body, breastplate, pauldron and backplate, but it comes with a pair of matching Bat-bracers, and a cuisse to protect your lower body. The suit is rounded out with a fabric cape and boots, as well as a helmet with bat-like knife-ears – though Christopher didn’t make the helmet himself.

The whole getup was custom-made for a web series called Legends: The Dark Knight, and is now available for sale up on Etsy. Unless you’re Bruce Wayne, you’ll need to save up a few paychecks for this suit though – as it’s going for $9500(USD). Also, you need to be 6-feet-tall, weigh about 190 pounds, and have a 32″ waist. Though if you can afford another $1000 or so, Christopher will custom make one to your size.

Xevious T-Shirt: If Only It Offered Vertical Scrolling

Back in the day, Xevious was one of my favorite arcade games. It was one of the first-ever vertical-scrollers, and it offered great graphics for its time, a hypnotic soundtrack, and great gameplay. Now, you can celebrate fond memories of Namco’s arcade classic with this great full-print Xevious t-shirt.

xevious t shirt 1

The t-shirt is covered top-to-bottom with graphics from the 1983 arcade shooter. What I really love about the design is that it’s really cool all on its own, but those who know the game will know exactly what it’s all about.

xevious t shirt 2

Unfortunately, the Xevious t-shirts appear to have been so collectible that the price has escalated significantly over retail. But if you really want one, you can still find them over on Amazon Japan or eBay for anywhere from about $50 to $120 (USD). At least that’s still cheaper than an actual Xevious machine.
