Brutally Knitted Winter Masks for the Brutally Cold New Year

The weather will soon get ugly and the temperature could drop to brutal lows this winter. Reflect the ugliness of it all by donning these freaky winter masks by Brutal Knitting aka Tracy Widdess.

Brutal Knits8
You know how some things are so ugly that they end up looking pretty good? Well, I guess you can say that applies for these masks because they look absolutely freaky but they’re strangely all very appealing.

Expect people to give you funny looks or stare at you when you’ve got one of these masks on. But at least they won’t know who you really are, so if you spot someone you know, feel free to walk on by. You might actually end up freaking them out if you say “Hi!” anyhow.

Worf Hoodie: Don’t Let Klingons Catch You Wearing One

Confession: I’m wary of sharing anything related to Star Trek because I barely know anything about the franchise. It’s a franchise right? Right. But I do know that I’d rather wear a Worf hoodie instead of a Chewbacca hoodie. Notice how those two sound like they were named after dogs? Notice how I changed the subject because I didn’t have anything else to say?

Oh I know! If Worf ever needs to go under cover or keep a low profile, he can wear this hoodie so he can blend in. The hood will hide the ridges on his head. Oh wait.

Forgive me Warries Trekkies. You can order a Worf hoodie for $95 (USD) from Etsy seller Ewoks in Tutus. What? I did not make that up. I swear! Click the link!

Men’s Fish Tank Platform Shoes: Pimp My Heels

People are coming up with all sorts of weird shoes lately, but these men’s platform shoes with aquariums in the heels might actually be the most wacky of them all. Clearly inspired by I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, they’re definitely not something you’ll be wearing to work, unless the street is your office, that is.

The style itself looks like it came straight from the seventies with the wide heels and the laces. And while they look sort-of cool (again, in a bizarre way), I’m pretty sure only a handful of guys can actually wear these shoes and manage not to look like a fool.

They’d be great for disco-themed costume parties and pimp-cosplay, though.

They’re available over on Amazon for $44 to $88(USD) a pair, depending on the pattern and size. Not recommended for actual fish.

Flask Bangle Bracelet Lets You Wear Your Drink Around Your Wrists

Whether you need to stay hydrated or you’re just a drunk, you should have a flask. But if you find that carrying one is inconvenient, then you might want to wear one instead. We have the FlaskTie for the guys, and now the Flask Bangle for the ladies.

Flask Cocktail

These Flask Bangles were designed by none other than Cynthia Rowley. Those who fancy accessories like these and those who love the fact that it’s actually more than just a bracelet will love them. Unfortunately, the $225 fashion accessory is currently sold out (yes, it’s that popular) but you can sign up to get in-stock notifications.

Women who aren’t into huge, chunky accessories might want to skip this, though, and stick with actual flasks they can hold and carry instead.

DNA2Diamonds: Wear Your Dead Pets Around Your Neck

I could give you countless reasons why I love my dog. If I had to sum it all up, it would be because she loves me for who I am and forgives any small imperfections in the blink of an eye.

She has a maximum life span of 14 years, so that means I’ve got 13 more years with my canine best friend. That leaves me a lot of time to plan for what I’ll do when she finally goes. I’ve heard about pet cemeteries and pet cremation services, but the strangest pet-related end-game I’ve read about so far is DNA2Diamonds.

DNA2DiamondsDNA2Diamonds is a service that turns pet DNA into diamonds. The process involves taking a sample of the pet’s hair or ashes and putting it through a 70-day procedure that involves extremely high temperatures and pressures to create a gorgeous man-made diamond.

The process involves putting the carbon and a diamond seed crystal into a chamber with thick metal walls that heats it to more than 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit under about 800,000 pounds per square inch of pressure. After a number of days, a rough diamond emerges…

The rough gem then gets processed into the cut of your choice. Once it’s all ready, you can have it set into a pendant and wear your beloved pet around your neck for ages to come. It’s strange and creepy, yet fascinating at the same time.

It’s also expensive, with prices ranging from around $2,700 to $17,000(USD).

I/O Denim Jeans Add Perfect Pocket for Smartphones

Depending on what type of jeans you wear, I think most of us will agree that it can be uncomfortable having to carry your smartphone in the front pocket. Years ago, I had a pair of dress slacks that had a little pocket midway down the thigh that unzipped that you could poke a smartphone into. I thought that was a great invention.

phone jeans

A company called I/O Denim is running a Kickstarter campaign to create premium denim jeans that have very similar pocket on the leg designed to hold your smart phone for quick and easy access. Other than having that fancy little pocket above the knee for your smartphone, these are your basic denim jeans. The jeans are made in the USA, and unfortunately are far from cheap – costing roughly twice as much as a pair of your standard Levi’s – though they’re no more expensive than fancy designer brands.

The maker says that the First Edition jeans fall somewhere between skinny jeans and straight leg in the way they fit. I guess that means they won’t be too tight and they won’t be too loose. Initially, they’ll be available only in men’s sizes 32, 33, 34, and 36.

A pledge of $100(USD) will get you one of the first 50 pairs of I/O Jeans, saving $15 off of the regular price. The campaign is about 70% of the way to its goal and wraps up on 12/30/12, so if you want a pair, you should order them now.

Shark Cake Toppers: We’re Going to Need a Bigger Cupcake

How can you not love sharks? These awesome creatures are both feared and admired as some of natures most incredible creations. But it’s eat-or-be-eaten in the world of the shark, so maybe you should bite into them before they bite into you.

Thankfully, with these awesome 3-dimensional shark cupcake toppers, you can do just that. These detailed little sharks are the perfect dessert topper for that Jaws screening party you were planning now that it’s finally been released on Blu-ray.

Each one of these tasty little sharklets has been sculpted by Marison Mann of Sweet and Edible using fondant icing, and can be placed on top of your favorite cupcake or cake to complete your sea-themed get-together. Or if you’re like me, you might just eat them straight out of the box. That’s just how I roll. A set of 12 of these cute and cuddly ediblesharks will cost you $35(USD), while a set of 6 sells for $20. Laser beams sold separately.

And if you’re ready to top off a really big cake, be sure to check out the jumbo-sized shark cake topper, which appears to have many more big, pointy teeth.

Steampunk Arm Guard Has Working Bluetooth Keyboard: Typepunk

There’s just something so retro-futuristic about the idea of giant wrist-worn communicators. In the real world, we pretty much skipped right over these  contraptions and went straight to smartphones. So if you don’t have a Pip-Boy 3000 lying around, here’s the next best thing.

keyboard arm guard

What you’re looking at is a fully-functional wrist-worn Bluetooth keyboard. Its been done up in a sort of Steampunk leather and brass arm guard, which should offer both protection and computing on the go. From the pics, it actually looks like there are two variants of the keyboard floating around – one with square keys (which I prefer), and the other with little round ones.

keyboard arm guard 2

They were built by Thomas Willeford of Brute Force Studios, and appear to have gotten their start as those cheap little Bluetooth keyboards with the touchpad built in. But that’s where the similarities end. The leather and brass work is quite intricate, and that’s probably why these things are selling for $1200(USD) each.

Head on over to Etsy to check out more pics.

DIY Google Project Glass: I Am Locutus of Nerd!

Even though people haven’t been that hyped up about Google’s Project Glass of late, some technophiles still couldn’t wait and decided to hack together their own augmented reality eyewear. This particular design makes you look like some sort of space pirate.

space cyborg pirate google glass

Gregory McRoberts designed his augmented reality specs to look like an angry eyepatch. Apart from serving as a cool disguise for Halloween, it was designed as a aid for the visually impaired. Instead of an LCD screen to show information, the patch uses a simple set of glowing LEDs to translate temperature and distance information to the wearer, helping provide depth and safety cues to those without 3D vision.

space cyborg pirate google glass naked

A flashing green LED will blink faster or slower depending on whether an object is closer or farther away. Blue LEDs will shift to red if an object or a room is above 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Gregory also suggests that the device could be fitted with vibration motors to provide similar feedback to the totally blind.

Pantone Jewelry: What Color is Your Pendant?

Here’s a cool piece of jewelry for the graphic designer or creative person in your life. Each one of these nifty pendants features an individual Pantone color chip – an homage to print design that also makes a cool color accent piece.

pantone pendant

They’re made by Budapest artist Gitta Hadabas of Hadigi Design. The pendants are printed onto a special holographic paper, giving them a really cool shimmering effect while viewed from different angles. The paper is set under a round glass cabochon, and placed into an antique bronze setting.

They come in a variety of colors, and sell for approximately $21 (USD) over on Etsy. Keep in mind that price doesn’t include a chain, but then you can attach these to a necklace, bracelet or keychain of your choice.

What’s your favorite Pantone color? I was always a sucker for “High Risk Red.”
