Pokémon X/Y Automatic Shiny Finder: Monster Miner

Pokémon X & Y have lots of hard to find monsters, from highly conditional evolutions to the legendaries that you can only catch after finishing the game’s story. But the most coveted type of Pokémon, the rarest of the rare, are the shiny Pokémon – alternate colors of the game’s creatures. Allegedly you only have a 1-in-8,192 chance of encountering one in battle. That’s why Redditor dekuNukem hacked his 3DS to do the dirty work for him.

pokemon x y automatic shiny finder by dekuNukemmagnify

dekuNukem’s hack was made for battles started via fishing; I don’t know if it can be modified for the more conventional grass-hunting method. In simple terms, the hacked 3DS automatically casts the fishing rod and enters into battle on its own. If the encountered Pokémon is ordinary, the hack automatically runs away from the battle and repeats the process. But if it hits pay dirt, it emits a buzz to alert dekuNukem. You can read a full explanation in his video, or you can skip to 1:08 to see it in action:

If you think you can build your own Shiny-farming 3DS, download dekuNukem’s code here. Here’s another code you should get: my friend code is 1048-8685-2995. Remember me when you catch those shinies!

Touch Board Turns Touch Into Sound (and More): Synthetic Synesthesia

Last month I talked about Bare Conductive’s Electric Paint Pen, which can be used to make simple or hidden circuits. Thanks to the company’s newest product, you can use the pen to make more complex and fun devices. Bare Conductive’s Touch Board turns anything conductive – including the Electric Paint and your body – into a trigger for its built-in mp3 player or MIDI device.

touch board by bare conductive 620x413magnify

The simplest way to use the Touch Board is to load an MP3 file to a microSD card and load the card to the board. Then you just connect a conductive material and a Li-Po battery to the board. Now all you need to do is touch the conductive material and the Touch Board will play the MP3 file.

The Touch Board also has a distance sensor, which means you can set it so that you don’t even have to touch your sensor to trigger the Touch Board.

Combine it with the Electric Paint and some creativity and you can make neat stuff like a cardboard boombox, a talking wall, a cookie thief alarm and more. But that’s not all. The Touch Board is also compatible with Arduino Shields, so you can extend its functionality beyond just triggering sounds. Anything that an Arduino Shield can do, you can turn into a distance- or touch-activated action.

Pledge at least  £45 (~$72 USD) on Kickstarter to get a Touch Board as a reward. Bare Conductive will even throw in a microSD card and an Electric Paint Pen with your Touch Board unit.

Verve Sensor Kit Emulates Mouse & Keyboard: The World is Your Controller

One of last year’s most successful Kickstarter-funded projects was the MaKey MaKey, a device that allowed you to input keyboard commands to a computer using everyday objects. A new USB device called the Verve is similar to the MaKey MaKey, but it’s more versatile. Using a variety of sensors, the Verve lets you trigger mouse and keyboard input using real-world actions or events.

verve keyboard mouse emulator sensor kitmagnify

The Verve consists of a central console and seven types of sensors that plug into the console. It also has a companion program that has both Windows and OS X versions. The program is used to map the input from a sensor to a mouse or keyboard key, as well as to set the threshold – i.e. the intensity of the input – to which the mapped key will be triggered. For instance, you can use attach the motion sensor to a sword and make your videogame character attack when you swing the sword. Or you can leave the motion sensor by your cubicle and make your computer show your desktop when someone passes by. Because you’re not hiding anything there.

Pledge at least $99 (USD) on Kickstarter to get a Verve kit as a reward. The kit will come with one of each sensor along with all the cables you need. I’m a bit conflicted with the potential of the Verve. On one hand, the variety of sensors means it encourages a creative and diverse array of input options. On the other hand, the one-to-one correspondence of a sensor to a key makes it quite cumbersome to setup anything beyond a simple command.

The MaKey MaKey is so easy to use because it gave you several inputs just by plugging in one board. The Verve gives you seven sensors, but each sensor can only be mapped to one key. What modern software uses just one key? From what I understand it also does not support key combinations (e.g. ctrl+X). And what if you want to use more than one unit of a particular sensor? It’s amazing how cheap and user-friendly sensors have become, but I’m not sure if the Verve will be a legitimately useful product or a mere curio.

Xenomorph Folding Brass Knuckles: Faceburster

Etsy seller Kilroy’s Attic makes folding brass knuckles designed to look like the Xenomorph from the Alien movies. I wouldn’t want to face a terrifying space creature that thinks I’m an incubator with just a melee weapon, much less one that only works at point blank range. It’s really beautiful though.

It starts out as a ring, but unfold it and you get full-length knuckles.

One drawback to its design is that you can’t switch it between its two sizes in a single motion. You need to remove the alien’s head to lock the unfolded knuckles into place. Also, it’s not actually made from brass – it’s constructed from pressure-cast dyed resin, with sturdy strands of test line to keep the hinges working.

You can order the knuckles from Kilroy’s Attic for $55 (USD).

Star Trek: The Next Generation Uniform Hoodies: Starfleece

Declare your allegiance to the Starfleet without wearing Spandex with ThinkGeek’s officially-licensed Star Trek: The Next Generation uniform hoodies. They have all three colors: red for command, gold for operations and blue for sciences. I guess the Enterprise had no need for plumbers and cooks. Or technologies.

The hood on each sweater has piping that matches the sweater’s color coding. When the hood is down, the piping makes it look like the sweater has a shallow v-neck, similar to the actual uniforms worn by Captain Picard and his crew.

Ghostbusters Ecto-1 Push Car is Paranormal

When Cory Newton-Smith made her son Cooper’s DeLorean push car last Halloween, she said that she would love to make epic costumes for her son every year. Fortunately for us, Cory and her husband Jeremy stuck to that promise. This year they dressed up Cooper as a Ghostbuster for Halloween. Naturally his push car had to go as Ecto-1.

Cory modified Cooper’s push car using “cardboard boxes repurposed from their recent move, spare electronics from an old vehicle, salsa cups from Mexican take-out, empty pop bottles, LEDs from the local electronics store, and some paint and tape.” Cory also bought felt replicas of the Proton Pack and Ghost Trap from Etsy shop owner Jezebel Rose. Cooper’s dad Jeremy also stepped up his game from last year. He installed LED lights and Bluetooth speakers that they can use to play the Ghostbusters theme and sound effects from a Windows Phone app.

Mega Man Bosses Bead Portraits: Rock’s Gallery

You don’t get to 10 Mega Man games without making a few enemies. 80 of them to be specific. Patrick Merrifield reminds us just how difficult the Blue Bomber’s life is with his massive masterpiece. Patrick made bead portraits of each of the Robot Masters that Rock faced in the classic Mega Man series.

Patrick said it took him over 90 hours and more than 67,000 beads to put the collection together. I don’t think I’ve ever arranged a thousand of anything. And yes, it is a collection of portraits, not one big wall, so you can split them however you want. You can’t buy them separately though. Here’s a closer look at one of the portraits.

Turn into Pay Man and buy the collection from Patrick’s Etsy shop for $1,000 (USD).

Pokémon X/Y Creature Map: Catchtography

Redditor Bobdor made a very useful map that lists the Pokémon available in Pokémon X/Y based on where you can catch them. Instead of selling or even asking donations for the map, Bobdor chose to share it with all of us for free. That’s the spirit of Kalos at work. Depending on what you want to get from the games, the map could either be a minor or a major spoiler. I think it’s an essential cheat sheet, much like the type chart.

Aside from organizing the creatures by locale, Bobdor also included a list of Pokémon that you can only obtain through evolution or Friend Safari. The only major omission in Bobdor’s map is the list of unobtainable Pokémon that you can only have in Pokémon X/Y if you already got them in previous Pokémon games, but again Bobdor has done more than enough.

Ready to catch ‘em all? You can download Bobdor’s map as a PNG file or as a PDF file. Redditor Thorium also setup an online version of the map if for some reason you don’t want to keep a copy of it. Forget about Goomy, Honedge and Hawlucha; we should be making Bobdor memes and fan art.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Metallic Flake Nintendo 64 Casemod: Twilight Prince

Link isn’t known for being flashy or even stylish, but fans still associate him and his series with bling, thanks to Nintendo’s tradition of releasing gold cartridges and systems for The Legend of Zelda games. The talented console modder Zoki64 and his customer steal that trick from Nintendo and then some by making a sparkly Ocarina of Time-themed Nintendo 64.

Zoki64 gave the console a metal flake finish, causing it to twinkle in direct light like an angsty vampire.

Back to the Future DeLorean Kid’s Push Car: 1.21 Gigaawwww

Other kids might be ashamed to ride next to the kid in the Normandy stroller, but not baby Cooper. Thanks to his mom Cooper has a flying DeLorean push car, and it didn’t take a ton of power to make. Just some cardboard, tape, paint, EL strips and of course a tiny red puffy vest.

Cooper’s mom and Instructables member Cory4281 made the car last year for Halloween. She attached the DeLorean’s parts on top of a Step2 push car. I love the small details in the car, like the cutouts. But the best part has to be how Cory4281 made it so the actual car’s wheels are now hidden, making it look like Cooper has a floating ride.
