GestureWorks Gameplay Lets You Make Touch Controls for PC Games: DIY Mobile Ports

The touch-friendly interface of Windows 8 led to the rise of portable computers with touchscreens. Those that run Windows 8 often have decent specs, enough to run modern PC games. The problem is that almost none of these games are optimized for touchscreens. GestureWorks wants to help solve that problem with Gameplay, a Windows 8 app that lets you make virtual controllers for PC games.

Yep, that’s Skyrim on a touchscreen. GestureWorks Gameplay has a simple drag and drop interface. You can make d-pads, joysticks and buttons of different sizes and colors, then map them to mouse buttons or keyboard keys. It also lets you map gestures, so you don’t have to fill up your screen with buttons.

As shown in the video, another convenient feature of GestureWorks Gameplay is that you can share controllers with other people. This means you may not even have to create a virtual gamepad; just download someone else’s configuration and you’re good to go.

Penny Arcade’s Mike Krahulik loves this app and uses it on his Surface Pro. I’d rather use physical controllers to play games, but as an iPad owner I know how convenient it is to play games on the go or in bed. GestureWorks Gameplay seems like a decent compromise for Windows 8 gamers. The app will launch on November of this year, but you can try and enter the open beta by registering on its website.

Fan Made Titanfall Titan Mech Action Figure: That Was Fast

Titanfall is an upcoming online multiplayer FPS for the Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. It seems to be one of the better launch titles for the Xbox One, putting an emphasis on agility and speed while rockin’ some sweet-looking mecha. A Japanese custom toy maker appears to have the same strengths. He managed to make a replica of the game’s giant robot, even though the game isn’t out yet.

I could very well be mistaken, but I’m guessing the toy maker uses the moniker nammkkyys. What I gleaned from his blog is that he based his replica on the publicly available trailers and images of Titanfall, as well as the large Titan bust that was shown at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. What makes his feat even more impressive is that he made it from scratch; it’s not a mod of an existing action figure. I think he took a few liberties here and there, but overall he did a great job. The action figure is about 9.5″ tall, which by the toy maker’s estimate makes it a 1/30 scale replica.

Check out nammkkyys’ blog for more images of the impressive Titan action figure. Be sure to check his previous posts to see his work in progress images; those will give you a better idea of his skill and dedication. Seeing as Respawn Entertainment i.e. Titanfall’s developer itself was the one who spread the word about nammkkyys’ work, I wouldn’t be surprised if he scores a free copy of the game for his work.

Mass Effect Reversible Hoodies: Player Choice

Remember the awesome fan-designed Mass Effect hoodies that BioWare was going to turn into real clothing? These are not those hoodies. But they’re still worth checking out because they’re reversible, which means you’re getting two designs for the price of one.

Etsy seller RetropopsugarUK makes these unofficial hoodies. Just send her your measurements and pick two from Garrus, Thane, Tali, Mordin or Miranda to be used as the designs for your hoodie. You read that right, there’s no Shepard design. I think a Grunt and Wrex combo hoodie would’ve been great too. Perhaps if business takes off RetropopsugarUK will add more designs.

castAR Augmented Reality Glasses: Wonderful Projections

With gadgets like the Oculus Rift and Google Glass, it’s looking like the future of displays is going to be a war for space on our faces. Here’s one more promising invention that may make you wish you had several pairs of eyes and foreheads. castAR glasses can not only beam stereographic 3D to your eyes a la Oculus Rift, they can also project 3D video to the real world.

castAR is the invention of Technical Illusions, a company setup by former Valve employees Jeri Ellsworth and Rick Johnson. The two are videogame industry veterans with decades of software and hardware expertise between them. Their device can display hologram-like videos and images in 3D using two micro-projectors and a retro-reflective sheet.

castar augmented reality glasses 3 620x347magnify

Aside from acting as a display, the sheet is also required for motion tracking. A camera in the middle of the glasses tracks infrared markers on the sheet to deduce the wearer’s head position and orientation. The wearer’s perspective is properly adjusted as he moves around the sheet, as if you were looking at a physical object from different angles.

The wand shown several times in the video is a controller designed to work with the glasses. It has buttons, a trigger and a joystick, and it can also track its own position. As you saw in the video the controller is used to interact with the projected images, increasing the illusion that there really is something in front of you.

What I find most exciting are the RFID add-ons. You can get an RFID tracking grid that can track RFID tags. The tags can do anything from summoning a figurine into the game – similar to Skylanders – or displaying stats. But there’s also an add-on with called an RFID Base. The base is essentially a tiny computer that can control other hardware. For example, as Technical Illusions mentions in its Kickstarter page, you could have an RFID Base with red LEDs and a tiny smoke machine. Stick a dragon figurine on top of that base and your game can trigger the base to become a glowing, smoke-belching monster. If that doesn’t make you support castAR I don’t know what will.

Pledge at least $189 (USD) on Kickstarter to get the castAR glasses plus the retro-reflective sheet.

Executive Decision Maker Pro Kit: for Wishy-washy Makers

Here’s a fun project that can be scaled depending on your skill level with electronics. Like the Magic 8-ball, the Executive Decision Maker Pro lets you outsource your fate to a gadget, which is just as clueless as you are but is at least more decisive.

Press the Decide button and the EDM Pro will flash either Yes or No for four seconds; press the Reset button to clear the answer right away if you need to answer another question. You can also hold the Reset button and keep pressing the Decide button for rapid fire answers.

If you took one look at the EDM Pro and you already know pretty much how it works, then all you need to do is to get the design files from Vagrearg’s website. But if you need a bit of help, you should get Vagrearg’s ready to assemble EDM Pro kit for $57.50 (USD). The kit has all the parts you need but has an unassembled circuit board. If you’re a beginner, you should pay extra for the LED mounting guide and the assembled board.  If you’re a Physics nut, get this EDM instead.

Nintendo DS Turned into Tiny Arcade Cabinet: 1DS

We’ve seen a full-sized arcade cabinet hacked to control a Nintendo DS. Redditor button-masher decided to cram the handheld into a tiny arcade cabinet instead. Then he went to great lengths to make it look like a real arcade cabinet, adding tiny joysticks and buttons, a marquee and even a couple of coin slots.

tiny arcade cabinet nintendo ds by button masher 620x823magnify

The joystick and buttons are wired to the DS’ circuit board. The upper screen of the DS serves as the cabinet’s monitor, while its lower half is crammed inside. Even though the cabinet’s banner bears Galaga’s logo, the cabinet can actually play any DS game. Or at least, any DS game that can be controlled with a joystick and two buttons. But I think button-masher’s good with his cartridges: Namco Museum and Konami Classics Arcade Hits.

There are probably cheaper or easier ways to make a tiny arcade cabinet, but if you have a spare or unused Nintendo DS this is a great way to repurpose the aging handheld. Head to Imgur to see more pictures of button-masher’s mod.

Plotagon Turns Words into Movies: Typecast

Writing a decent story is hard enough, but taking that story and turning it into a watchable film is even more complicated. But new software called Plotagon aims to turn anyone into a one-man movie-making machine. It uses a simple menu-based interface that helps you build a script, which turns into a computer-animated video as you’re writing it. Is it perfect? Nope. Far from it. It looks really fun though.

plotagon movie making software 620x360magnify

As you can see in the image above, Plotagon is divided into two parts: on the left is where you’ll write your manuscript, and on the right is a video player that shows you what your movie looks like. You don’t need to know the proper format for a manuscript or even have a deep vocabulary, because Plotagon cheats.

Since it would take an insanely complex program to read your mind or even parse your paragraph and figure out what you’re describing, Plotagon instead has a bank of scenes, characters, actions and more. As you pick out each element, it appears on your manuscript and is visualized in the video player almost instantaneously. It’s a bit like playing The Sims.

plotagon movie making software 2 620x386magnify

The only thing you can’t pick from Plotagon’s stock is the dialogue, which your digital actors will speak in silly synthesized voices. I don’t know if it supports other languages besides English though.

Plotagon is currently in beta, and is available for both Windows and OS X. You can download a free trial version on its official website, where you can also see a few short films made with the program. Plotagon will make money from its store, which will sell more characters, settings, etc. Imagine a Marvel character pack or a Star Wars location bundle. In fact, Stan Lee is going to make four new superheroes just for Plotagon. Imagine sharing co-creating duties with Stan the Man himself!

Mega Stomp Battle Motion-Activated Sound Effects: Faux Foley

Kids love to play fight. Just give them a few seconds of idle time and their minds will transform them into all sorts of characters. Soon enough you’ll hear them making sound effects for their movements and weapons. But the problem with being their own foley artist is that they can’t pew pew pew and spew killer lines at the same time. The Mega Stomp Battle can help with that.

mega stomp battle sound effects by thinkgeekmagnify

The Mega Stomp Battle is composed of a small box and a wand that emit sound effects when you walk, wave the wand or push the wand’s trigger. It has 10 sound banks or character types, such as a knight, a giant monster or a pirate. Each sound bank has at least six sounds for different types of movements like walking, attacking and more.

Someone on YouTube said we should watch the video on mute. I disagree. The guys in the video look stupid even with the sound on. But you might not care about how you look once you’ve tried living a life with sound effects. You can order Mega Stomp Battle from ThinkGeek for $40 (USD).

MultiMod Consoles Modular Workstation Kit: IKEA for Geeks

Tinkerers, hackers, makers, geeks – whatever you call them, craftsmen who specialize in electronics and software want to customize their work environment. It manifests in lots of ways: custom-built computers, hardware mods and software hacks. But unless they’re also good at carpentry, they may find it hard to personalize their furniture or workstation. That’s where the Kickstarter project called MultiMod kit comes in.

multimod modular workstation kit fitzkits by cody wilmer 620x434magnify

The kits are based on two simple parts: PVC-coated steel poles and clamp joints. The idea is that you can combine any number of poles and joints to satisfy your needs. Add accessories like countertops, casters and hooks and you can build anything from a small tray to a portable 3D printer stand to a multi-monitor battlestation, as shown in the images above and below. Like LEGO, you can easily dismantle and reuse the parts, which means their usefulness is mainly limited by your needs and imagination.

multimod modular workstation kit fitzkits by cody wilmer 2 620x463magnify

MultiMod is actually a bundled version of parts that you can buy piece by piece under the name Fitz Kits. Honestly I don’t why Cody Wilmer and his partners took to Kickstarter for MultiMods when they already have Fitz Kits setup. That doesn’t make their invention any less useful though.

multimod modular workstation kit fitzkits by cody wilmer 3 620x463magnify

Pledge at least $75 (USD) on Kickstarter to get a MultiMod kit. The Battlestation kit in the images above can be yours if you pledge at least $95. You can also have a look at the Fitz Kits shop if you don’t need a lot of poles and joints at once.

LEGO BMO Raspberry Pi Computer is Red Hot Like Pizza Supper

LEGO enthusiast Michael Thomas made this awesome LEGO replica of  Adventure Time’s BMO. But wait! BMO is computer! Michael also put a Raspberry Pi inside BMO, as well as a 2.5″ screen. That means he can actually use his BMO to play video games, just like Finn and Jake do with the cartoon BMO.
