The Walking Dead Cross-Stitched Page: Fabric Novel

The title already spoils it, but you have to see this to believe it. Sprite Stitch forum member Cross Stitch Ninja backs up his or her moniker with this jaw-dropping cross stitch piece. If you think cross-stitch is only good for pixel art, think again. Prepare to have your mind blown brain eaten.

I guess the letters kind of give it away, but other than that if I saw the image above with the unstitched borders cropped out I would’ve thought it was a ballpoint pen drawing.

Even Tony Moore, the artist who drew the original panel, was thoroughly impressed by what Cross Stitch Ninja did. You can see a higher resolution version of the piece as well as in progress shots on Cross Stitch Ninja’s Flickr page.

X-Cube 3D Printed Open Source Puzzle Cube: Rubikulous

Dane Christianson’s X-Cube is not the weirdest, most complex or most sophisticated puzzle cube I’ve ever seen. But Dane didn’t really want to make the world’s most difficult or intimidating take on the Rubik’s cube. His aim with the X-Cube was to make a fun and relatable product to raise people’s awareness about 3D printing.

x cube 3d printed open source puzzle cube by dane christianson

The X-Cube is made of 52 moving parts and 102 stickers, which Dane says leads to 125 decillion possible permutations.

For me, the most impressive part about the X-Cube is that it’s open source. You have to pledge at least $40 (USD) to its Kickstarter fundraiser to get a finished version as a reward, but you only need to pledge $1 to get the toy’s 3D files, which you can then use to print the toy yourself. Dean says he’s not worried about knockoffs; in fact, he says he’ll welcome them if it means more people will become aware of 3D printing.

Custom PlayStation 3s for Sony’s Friends: It Only Does Sweet Casemods

The very talented case modder Javier Riquelme customized several PlayStation 3 consoles for Sony, who in turn gave them as gifts to its partner developers and publishers. With the exception of what seems to be Javier’s trademark flourish, each console looks radically different and suited to its theme. This dude is for real.

As I said, each casemod is unique; if someone told me that the Borderlands-themed PS3 was made by someone from Gearbox Software while the Metal Gear Rising one was made by a cyborg ninja from Kojima’s lair I would have believed that. But Javier does like adding thick letters with LEDs that contrast nicely with the rest of the sweet art on the surface of the console.

All of these look awesome, but I want to shake Javier’s hand just for the Assassin’s Creed casemod. I don’t even like that franchise and I want the console. You can see more shots of Javier’s work on his Imgur gallery, on his Twitter page and on his Facebook page.

Borderlands Belt Buckles: Straptrap

You don’t need pants to play Borderlands – I haven’t played Borderlands 2 yet so I’m not sure about its pants requirements – but if you’re really into it you’ll want to wear eight pairs of pants just so you can rock these fan made belt buckles based on the game. They were made by Imgur member Jellyroger. I bet you’re the one who’s jelly now.

As you can see, Jellyroger based the designs on the arms manufacturers in the Borderlands games. He gave each company a unique and fitting design. The Jakobs one is my favorite. Check out the other buckles in the gallery:

Jellyroger and his friend Cubewithincube – they sound like they’d make for an awesome cartoon – are currently taking a heat check on the interest for the belts. If you want to buy the buckles, let them know either on Jellyroger’s Imgur page or on Cubewithincube’s Borderlands 2 forum thread.

Takara Tomy Transforming Robot Car Prototype: Brave Robotics in Disguise

Last year Kenji Ishida and his company Brave Robotics released 10 units of his awesome remote controlled car that can transform into a mecha. Unsurprisingly, all 10 units were bought, and there’s no word on when the company will release more. But you might not have to wait for Brave Robotics, because toy maker Takara Tomy is also working on a similar toy.

Before you accuse Takara Tomy of stealing Kenji Ishida’s work, lawyer down. Frankie of Hobby Media spotted Takara Tomy’s prototype at the 2013 Tokyo Toy Show, and apparently he also found out that Takara Tomy is collaborating with Brave Robotics. So we’re all good.

Frankie also said that he saw the toy transform, but he was asked not to film it as it was still a work in progress. Just to refresh your memory, here’s what Brave Robotics’ toy looks like in action:

I think I’ll save up for Ishida’s life-size transforming car.

Iron Man Arc Reactor Ring Will Keep Your Love Alive

…or you can use it to keep metal shards at bay, as your last resort to keep your finger alive. You will claim that endearing vulnerability for four movies. Then for some unfathomable reason you will retcon the arc reactor’s reason for existence, and you will do so in the most hurried way possible. Just… what?! Clearly, this ring is far more beautiful than the highly polished piece of crap that is Iron Man 3.

The arc reactor ring was made by Gino Arizmendi aka Pathetic Peripatetic. Gino was commissioned to make the ring by a fellow geek who had seen his unofficial TARDIS ring. To make the ring pop, Gino set blue topaz and diamond baguettes (Ho ho ho! Un baguette!) in white gold.

LEGO Mass Effect Normandy SR-2: My Favorite Toy on the Citadel

LEGO enthusiast Ben Caulkins made this sweet LEGO model of the Normandy SR-2, Commander Shepard’s flying base in Mass Effect 2. The ship is almost 4 ft. long and has a 19″ wingspan. It needs a Garrus minifig to calibrate its weapons.

I don’t know why I didn’t notice it until now, but the Normandy kind of looks like it has a Volus mask on. It’s not so apparent in Caulkin’s model though.

This Engine Probably Has an Extra 30 Horsepower

A couple of years ago we saw a pretty sweet Scion xB that was modded as an homage to 8-bit gaming. It would’ve been more awesome if it had this engine. It’s a Honda Civic B series engine made to look like a NES controller, complete with the Konami Code at the bottom.

What I really want to see is a car with a NES controller for a steering wheel – er, steering controller.

Lightsaber Knitting Needles: for Stitch Lords

A couple of weeks ago we saw a crochet hook that looks like a lightsaber. This DIY project on the other hand gives you a knitting implement that looks like a lightsaber, except this time it also lights up. Not that you’d want to knit in the dark.

Instructables member Random_Canadian came up with the design. He used small LED flashlights as the base. He replaced the white LEDs in the flashlights with red and green, but you can pick whatever color you want. He then used acrylic rods as needles, because the rods focus and extend the light from the LEDs.

Admiral Ackbar Magnitude Bust: Napoleon It’s a BonaTrap

Careful Star Wars fans! What you’re seeing, it’s a trap! For your money, that is. It’s the wise and bug-eyed Admiral Ackbar, decked in military uniform and a glorious mustache. This fine sculpture is based on a glorious painting by Steven Daily.
