3D Printed Legend of Zelda Items: Hyrule Foundry

A die-hard Legend of Zelda fan saw the wisdom in using the power of 3D printing to bring the game’s items to life. He also has the courage to sell the items despite the looming threat of Nintendo’s octorok lawyers. He calls his endeavor the Hyrule Foundry. I like to call it the Nintendo 3DP.

The potions are still being finalized and the arrows are in the wrong color, but otherwise the Hyrule Foundry features all 32 items from the classic adventure game, from the Wooden Sword to the Ladder to the Book of Magic. A bonus consequence of the Hyrule Foundry is that we now have an exchange rate for Rupees. One Rupee is $12 (USD). But for some reason two Rupees are worth $18. Hmmm. Hylian math is weird.

You can read more about the Hyrule Foundry on its official blog. If you can’t go alone without these items any longer, you can buy them at the Hyrule Foundry shop on Shapeways. They’re quite expensive though – the cheapest one is $4 for two arrows; the entire set sells for $320(USD).

Video Game Gourmet T-Shirt: Edibles in Electronic Entertainment

Video games are gleefully free from the shackles of realism, but in order to establish a rapport with us they sometimes borrow from our world. Take food for instance. Games use them as restorative items, as power ups, as lies. The Gourmet t-shirt features some of the most popular food items in games.

The design was made by deviantARTIST/virtual chef/man of many names Mark Nelson aka SparkMark aka TheCuraga aka donutplains. Dude, consolidate your brand.

You can buy the t-shirt from Red Bubble for about $25(USD). If you want to save $8 and change, order the t-shirt on TeePublic. TeePublic will sell it for $20 if 30 orders are received before June 7, 2013. Head to Nelson’s deviantART page to know if you named all the items correctly.

Eidos Sensory Augmentation Device Concepts: Anti-ADHD

We already have devices that augment two our sight and hearing. But a group of Innovation Design Engineering students at the Royal College of Art built a couple of devices that provide a new level of augmentation. One is a headset that applies special effects to what you’re seeing in real time, while the other one is a mask that works like noise canceling headphones. No Typhoon explosives though.

eidos sensory augmentation devices by tim bouckley et al

Tim Bouckley, Millie Clive-Smith, Mi Eun Kim and Yuta Sugawara call their project Eidos. The idea is not just to help us focus on sights or sounds that we consider important, but also to provide totally new ways of seeing and hearing.

The headset for example can apply a long-exposure effect on moving objects – a bit like seeing in four dimensions. The mask on the other hand not only blocks out all sound except for the one you want to hear, it broadcasts the sound through your inner ear. The students claim that this makes it seem like the sound is being sent directly inside your head – a bit like being a schizophrenic.

Obviously the devices in their current state are silly and impractical – the cool use cases shown in the video are all hypothetical and conceptual. Still, wouldn’t be amazing if future sunglasses and hearing aids had these capabilities? I mean I didn’t ask for these, but when they arrive I can see old man Bert buying Eidoses. Eidii. Eidoes. Edeese. Eidosia.

Street Legal Batman Tumbler Replica Rises

The Gumball 3000 is an international rally for rich people who own exotic supercars. It’s a chance to show off and let their expensive toys roar. But this year’s race will feature one car that’s surely more exotic than even the newest Lambo. It’s a life-size replica of the Tumbler from Nolan’s Batman films.

The car was commissioned by a group of gearheads from Saudi Arabia who call themselves Team Galag. According to Yahoo! Autos, the replica has a 400hp engine, goes up to 100mph and cost $1.6 million (USD) to build. A Wayne-level budget; I guess that adds to the authenticity. Autoblog says that the car was made by Parker Brothers Concepts, who are no strangers to building wacky one-off vehicles for the rich and famous.

Steampunk Nintendo Controller Coffee Table: NESSSS

Here’s a coffee table that would go well with the steampunk NES. It was made by Charles Lushear of Bohemian Workbench using found items. I wouldn’t disagree if you think it’s more junkyard than steampunk, but either way it’s an impressive piece.

The cedar wood tabletop used to be part of a fence, the A and B buttons are antique clock movements and the Start and Select buttons are vintage rifle magazines. But the most intriguing part is the directional pad.

Apparently that piece of metal is a Katanga cross or a handa, a copper cross that was used as a form of currency in the Democratic Republic of Congo from the 19th to the 20th century. Katanga Katanga cross, y’all.

Lushear is selling it on his Etsy shop for $2,600 (USD). That’s a lot of Katanga crosses.

PaRappa the Toaster: Kick! Punch! Toast!

PaRappa the Rapper is one of the quirkiest games ever made. So it’s only appropriate for it to have an unusual merchandise. eBay seller xdeath_5 is auctioning off what he claims is a rare PaRappa the Rapper official Space Age Printing toaster.

I don’t exactly get how it works, but it has these metal “printing slides”…

… that seem to be stored in a slot in the back of the toaster. I assume that the metal bits can be slid into the toaster to create images on your bread.

xdeath_5 claims that the toaster still works, just that it’s missing one printing slide and “the pictures don’t appear well on wheat bread.” I guess you just gotta believe that it works. Bid at least $100.99 (USD) on eBay to get a chance to take this rad little toaster home. The auction ends in about 2 days as of this writing, so chop chop!

Mana Bar Necklace Can be Equipped by All Classes

Last year we saw Critical Hit Collectibles’ glow-in-the-dark Life Bar necklace. The Etsy shop is now selling a necklace containing the other half of the RPG staple. When you wear this, I hope you have a fun time explaining to non-gamers that your name isn’t “Mana.”

The pendant glows in the dark as well:

Critical Hit Collectibles can also make “partially depleted” versions of both the Mana Bar and Life Bar necklaces. One is almost full while the other is almost empty.

Cast the Browser spell and head to Critical Hit Collectibles’ Etsy shop to order the Mana Bar necklace for $16 (USD).

Mega Man Unlimited Fan Game: Hold on to Your Heart Tank

It’s been quite a while since Capcom released an official Mega Man game; even its 25th anniversary gift to fans Street Fighter x Mega Man was mostly made by a fan. So forget about doing something right; it seems that if Mega Man fans want something done at all, they have to do it themselves. That’s what Philippe “MegaPhilX” Poulin and his friends are trying to accomplish with Mega Man Unlimited.

mega man unlimited by megaphilx

According to a Destructoid article from last year, MegaPhilX initially came up with Mega Man Unlimited just to join an animation contest sponsored by Capcom-Unity. When he decided to go ahead and make it a full game, he intended it to embody his ideas of what Mega Man 10 should be like, since the game had not yet been released at the time. MegaPhilX says that the design for Mega Man Unlimited was influenced by Mega Man 9 and 3.

MegaPhilX and five of his friends – Kevvviiinnn, ThunderThouin, Gabriel, Jocelyn and Jansim – have been working on the game for several years now and Mega Man Unlimited is finally in alpha stage. Let’s cut them some slack though, it’s not like programming this game is their full-time gig.

Here’s the latest trailer for the game:

And here’s its debut trailer, which MegaPhilX uploaded last year. It lays out the plot of the game and also shows gameplay footage:

MegaPhilX can’t say when they’ll be finished with the game, only that it will be released as a standalone PC app with support for both keyboards and game pads. Keep an eye on the Mega Man Unlimited website and Facebook page for updates on the game.

Durovis Dive Head-Mounted Display Uses Android Smartphone: Oculus Thrift

A few units of the much hyped Oculus Rift 3D headset are now in the hands of developers and testers. But Stefan Welker wants you to know that if you have a modern Android smartphone, you already have half of a 3D head-mounted display. Welker and his colleagues are working on releasing the Durovis Dive, an open source 3D gaming system that works with Android smarphones.

durovis dive 3d gaming headset via android smartphone

The current prototype of the Durovis Dive uses a 3D-printed case and a pair of lenses jacked from cheap binoculars. The head-tracking software taps into the smartphone’s accelerometer, compass and gyroscope. Currently the only game that works for it is a modified version of Quake 2, but as Welker mentions in the video other games can be tweaked to work with the Durovis Dive.

The consumer version of the Durovis Dive should be released by August 2013, but Welker already posted the software (including the modded Quake 2) and instructions to make your own on the Durovis Dive website.

DIY Money Shredding Alarm Clock: Wake up or Go Broke

A couple of years ago we saw a concept for a diabolical alarm clock. The idea was that a desperate late sleeper would willingly place a banknote on the clock, knowing that the clock will shred the money if he doesn’t wake up when the alarm goes off. And now the concept has been turned into reality, by a tinkerer named – I am not making this up – Rich Olson.

money shredding alarm clock by rich olson

Rich made the clock using a SparkFun ClockIt and a USB-powered paper shredder. Rich is quite merciless too – the clock waits less than 10 seconds after the preset time before it starts shredding your money:

Note that destroying money is illegal in many countries. So if you’re going to make your own shredding alarm clock, why not tape your pinky finger to it instead? That’ll be way more effective at waking you up. Just kidding.
