LEGO Stephen Hawking Kit: A Small Replica of Man

Here’s something you don’t see every day: a tiny LEGO sculpture of the world famous physicist and author Stephen Hawking, complete with his wheelchair and computer. I bet there’s a Higgs boson in there too, we just can’t detect it.

Its creator, The Living Brick, calls the replica The Standard Model, after the particle physics theory of the same name. I may not have understood what I just said, but The Living Brick made sure that even I can assemble Dr. Hawking, because he included a booklet of instructions with each kit. Actually no I’m pretty sure I’ll end up losing half of the pieces.

You can order the kit from Amazon for just $40 (USD). Got LEGO? Head to Eurobricks and there you’ll find the building blocks of Dr. Hawking.

Atari 2600 Portable is Woodier than its Ancestor

We’ve featured our fair share of portable Atari 2600 mods, but I don’t think any of those can hold a candle to this one. Speaking of candles, the future owner of this one of a kind handheld should keep it away from even the tiniest of flames, because its case is made entirely out of wood.

The mod was made by eBay seller retro_mood. Inside the varnished wooden case is a 3.5″ TFT screen, a 700mAh battery that should last up to 3 hours per charge, two player controls – one of which was made out of a PlayStation analog stick – and the guts of an NTSC Atari 2600 console. Retro_mood also added digital volume and brightness controls as well as composite video and mono audio outputs. Perhaps most importantly for a handheld, this Atari 2600 has a pause button! Its weight – 600g (approx. 1.3lbs) – borders on iPad territory though, so minus points for portability there.

Ultimately though, retro_mood intends this handheld to reside not in the deep pockets of a collector. He’s selling it for a cool $1,240 (USD) on eBay. Money doesn’t grow on trees, but neither do wooden cases.

The C3POscar Actually Exists: And the Jedi Academy Award Goes to…

When I first saw this illustration made by Rodrigo Ferreira I wondered why no one ever thought of it before. It turns out someone at LucasFilm did put two and two together, because the company actually gives away C3POscar trophies. How awesome is that Rodrigo?

Filmmaker Brad Bird – the man who helmed The Iron Giant and The Incredibles, among other things – tweeted the above picture on Mar 1, 2013. This is one droid that LucasFilm employees are looking for; Bird said that the C3POscar is only given to those who have served the company for 20 years. The one in Bird’s picture belongs to a LucasFilm veteran named Paul Matwiy.

LED Ampli-tie: Daft Punk Formal

Have you seen those t-shirts that have a built-in equalizer? They look cool in theory, but they’re not really awesome up close. Most of them have this awkward-looking large cardboard in the middle where the LEDs shine through. Then there’s the fact that you have to carry around a battery pouch. This necktie variant is a lot cooler.

adafruit led ampli tie

Becky Stern of Adafruit calls her creation the LED Ampli-tie. This particular tie runs on Adafruit’s FLORA, an Arduino-compatible board. The Flora detects ambient noise via a small microphone hidden behind the tie’s knot. Adafruit already wrote the program that will make the 16 Flora RGB LEDs react to the noise. The best part? The Ampli-tie runs on the FLORA’s battery.

Check out Becky’s post on Adafruit’s website for the full walkthrough.

Game Boy Color External Hard Drive: 8 Trillion Bit Handheld

The Game Boy Color can only store a few megabytes of data in its memory, but these carcasses of the handheld contain nothing but a 1TB hard drive. They can probably store all of the games that have ever been released for all of Nintendo’s handhelds and still have some room left for your homework.

Jason Roach sells these colorful external hard drives on his Etsy shop 8-Bit Memory. He usually fits them with a 1TB USB 3.0 Western Digital hard drive, but he says you can also ask for a 500GB drive. He can also look for other colors if you don’t want the ones he’s offering. If you want to go older school, then get the Game Boy hard drive. It also has a 1TB USB 3.0 hard drive. All of the hard drives are powered via USB so you won’t need an adapter for them.

I Choose You T-Shirt: Pokémon Meets Hokusai, is Super Effective

Japanese artist Hokusai probably sought to honor the power of the sea when he made The Great Wave off Kanagawa. But with a simple cut and paste, KyozoKicks managed to make Blastoise the bad ass part of this famous woodblock print.

Legends say that this is the final form of the bib they call The Wee Spittle off of Drooling Baby. The t-shirt is available from KyozoKicks’ online store for $23 (USD).

Roll20 Online Tabletop Will Be a Critical Hit with Game Masters

It’s been at least a decade since I last played a tabletop RPG, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there are programs out there that augment players’ pens and papers with mice and keyboards. But here’s one that seems very easy to use. It’s called Roll20, a highly customizable web-based virtual tabletop.

roll20 online virtual tabletop

I think the best way to describe Roll20 is that it’s an image editor for dungeon masters with a video chat app added on to it. If that sounds intimidating, don’t be. Its tools are mostly straightforward and employ commonly used commands like copy, paste and drag-and-drop. It also has a built-in search engine for assets, so you can go in empty-handed, look for characters, maps and even soundtracks, then setup your play area, all from within the app. It also has a dice-rolling feature that can even show a 3D dice onscreen to all of your party members. Don’t have any tabletop playmates? Don’t worry – Roll20 lets you join public games! How awesome is that? Watch the overview to get a better idea of what you can do with Roll20:

The best thing about Roll20 is that it’s free. The group behind it makes money by selling premium assets like character art and maps, which is entirely optional especially if your DM is awesome enough to make custom art for your adventures. Sign up at the Roll20 website and start building the adventure of your dreams. And your friends’ nightmares.

Fan-Made LEGO Hogwarts Castle is Riddikulus

The famous Hogwarts Castle from the Harry Potter series already has an official LEGO playset, but I’m sure that even J.K. Rowling herself would rather play with this sprawling replica made by Alice Finch. It would be notable enough for its sheer size, but what takes it to the next level is its decked out interior.

lego hogwarts harry potter castle by alice finch

Whereas the official LEGO Hogwarts set is made of 1,920 pieces, Alice used about 400,000 bricks to build her Hogwarts. I can’t even count to 400,000. I always get lost when I get to the tens. In an interview with The Brothers Brick, Alice said she worked on the replica for a total of one year, spread out over an 18-month period. Aside from the books and movies, Alice also visited the Harry Potter studio in London to get a better idea of the school’s interior.

Alice’s Hogwarts won Best in Show and People’s Choice at last year’s BrickCon. It’s easy to see why. Seriously go check out Alice’s Flickr page for more pictures of her masterpiece. I could spend hours appreciating the details of her work and I’m not even a Harry Potter fan.

Legend of Zelda Hylian Shield Backpack: Schoolward Shield

Just as the Hylian Shield – in its many incarnations – has protected Link from countless projectiles and attacks, so will this backpack protect your books, Nintendo handhelds and any stray rupees you find.

Etsy seller Ivana Roso aka pepolina said she sewed the individual parts by hand, then put the backpack together using a sewing machine. She didn’t say what materials she used, although looking at it I think it’s made of synthetic leather.

Emulator Runs x86 Windows Apps on Windows RT Devices: A Window to the Full Windows

I think that one of Microsoft’s biggest mistakes in recent years is Windows RT, and by extension the Surface RT. I’m not saying Windows RT devices are useless. It’s just that seen in the context of their release, they are products that can confuse and scare off potential Windows 8 users. Microsoft might be better off supporting this hack that lets full Windows programs run on Windows RT.

windows x86 emulator for windows rt by mamaichi

Xda-developers forum member mamaich is currently developing a program that enables Windows RT devices to run applications that were originally intended to run on the desktop version of Windows. In other words, it’s going to turn a Surface RT into a Surface Pro (with weaker hardware). Mamaich is aware and clearly states that even in its finished state, the program isn’t a cure-all. It won’t be able to launch some desktop applications simply because there are many hardware and software limitations in Windows RT devices. We do know that it can launch Heroes of Might and Magic 3, though.

Head to mamaich’s thread on the xda-developers forum to download or find out more about the program. Mamaich lays out the intricacies of the program in this particular post. This isn’t for the faint of heart though; the program is in beta and it requires you to jailbreak your Windows RT device.
