LEGO Big MaK Mech: I’m Lovin’ It

In the future, when the inevitable and literal fast food wars break out, we’ll all be too fat and unhealthy to fight for our chain of choice – which is why these fast food chains should start developing their own war machines. Here’s a free idea for McDonald’s, courtesy of Sean and Steph Mayo. Behold! The Big MaK!

lego big mak

The husband and wife LEGO enthusiasts made the Big MaK for Bricklink’s Creations for Charity (and it seems it’s already been bought). I hope the Mayos make more food-themed mechs. I imagine the Taco Bell mech will be able to combine with the Doritos mech to form a smaller but tougher robot, the KFC robot will be a robot sandwiched in between two other robots and the Pizza Hut robot will be stuffed with smaller robots.

MR-808 Naturalizes the TR-808 Synthesizer

Moritz Simon Geist has an unusual name. He’s also a electronic musician who has been getting bored with the production of electronic music, probably because the technology has reached a stage when you can call up practically any instrument with virtually no effort. So he decided to make a drum machine that plays samples in real-time, using actual drums. And robots.

mr 808 robot installation by moritz simon geist

Geist decided to emulate the legendary Roland TR-808, the drum machine that kickstarted the careers of many artists, despite – or is it because of? – the fact that it doesn’t sound like any real drum kit. The TR-808 uses analog circuits to create its sounds, but Geist’s installation replicates these sounds physically via percussion instruments, hence the name Mechanical Replica-808, or MR-808. The real kicker here is that Geist doesn’t play the instruments himself; he built robots that he triggers with the help of an Arduino microcontroller and Ableton, a music software. Then he housed the robots in an oversized case that resembles the TR-808.

Now that’s a high tech emulation of a low tech gadget. Check out Geist’s blog for more details on his creation.

Skittles Sorting Machine: Segregate the Rainbow

I love candy. Any color will do; candy is candy. But some of you entitled consumers seem to think only one color is good enough for you. Brian Egenriether seems to be one of these discriminating snackers, because he’s built a device that can sort Skittles according to color. Ah, first world problems.

skittles sorting machine by egenriether

This is actually the second version of egenriether’s machine. This newer one makes the color detection stage visible (when you open the machine) and has had more of its parts painted. The machine uses an RGB sensor to detect the color of the Skittles.

It’s obviously faster to sort the candy by hand, but that doesn’t make the device less remarkable. Egenriether said that if he made the machine sort faster, some of the Skittles ended up on their side below the sensor – as opposed to lying flat  – causing errors in detection. I like that it looks like an old appliance despite being made of parts from different objects, including a bird feeder and a telescope. No word if Egenriether is selling the device or if it can also sort other colored candy.

Kaleidoloop Sound Collector: for Wannabe Foley Artists

In case you haven’t noticed, everything is a remix. Good artists and inventors stock up on influences and material from other sources. If you’re a musician or if you want to make your own sound effects or if you just want something to listen to when you’re wasted, you can compile sounds wherever you go with the Kaleidoloop.

kaleidoloop sound collector

The Kaleidoloop was invented by Critter & Guitari, maker of the popular Pocket Piano synthesizer. The Kaleidoloop lets you record sounds and then manipulate those sounds on the fly. The sounds are recorded as .wav files on an SD card (the Kaleidoloop comes with a 256MB SD card). It also has a 3W speaker so you can listen and tweak the sounds you recorded on the go.

Here’s a trippy explanation of the Kaleidoloop:

You can order the Kaleidoloop directly from Critter & Guitari for $299 (USD). I wish they’d come up with a cheaper version; I’ll only use it to record my friends’ favorite expressions and a laugh track so we can pretend we’re in a sitcom.

Keyboard Contact Lens Case Helps You Find the Right Type of Lens

I tried to replace my corrective glasses with contact lenses, but after about a thousand and three tries of putting them on it just seemed silly to me to damage my eye further. But those of you who do wear contacts should find this geeky lens case to be quite convenient.

The Contact Keys Lens Case imitates the look of traditional keyboard keys, so you can still distinguish which lens goes in which eye even if your default eyesight is very blurry. You can order the case from GamaGO for just $5 (USD).

They should make one for gamers that has the “A” and “D” keys instead.

Mjölnir Bottle Opener Smites Thirst

The god of thunder is always up for a drink, so he’s offered up his hammer to anyone who wants to get hammered. Unlike the mythical crusher, you only need a modicum of strength to lift this Mjölnir.

Note that the lead picture on Fancy – shown below – is misleading, as it’s entirely different from the one that’s actually being sold. Thanks to Redditor bobdobbsjr’s sleuthing, we can assume that the bottle opener shown below appears to be a custom job – or at least a Photoshopped image – by Anthony Petrie, who appears to have modded a toy replica of Mjölnir.

The custom hammer is clearly better, but as far as I know it’s not for sale.

Perhaps only Anthony is worthy of wielding his bottle opener. The rest of us can order the smaller Mjölnir bottle opener from ThinkGeek for $18 (USD). Then get this whiskey if you want to go the extra mile.

Gaming Luggage Labels: Remembrance from Your Trips to Places that Don’t Exist

There are many reasons why people play videogames, but one of the most common motivations is the opportunity to escape from the realities of life and have a grand adventure. Illustrator A.J. Hateley came up with these videogame-themed luggage labels to celebrate our virtual journeys.

The stickers reference locations from some of the most popular videogames, from Pokémon to Fallout: New Vegas. Looking at each of them will surely flood your brain with memories of your digital trips.

That Fallout California sticker is the bomb, but nostalgia dictates that the Midgar one be my favorite. You can order the stickers from Red Bubble for $2.30 (USD) each. Buy 6 stickers and you’ll get a 50% discount.

Creeper Coffee Mug Is Oddly Square and Oddly Satisfying

Creepers always ruin your hard-earned progress in Minecraft, and it’s time to take revenge.  Don’t be a cotton-headed ninnymuggins, get the Creeper Coffee Mug, which has the face of your (least) favorite Minecraft monster printed on its side.  Whether you enjoy jumping up in fear whenever you look at your coffee mug or if you plant to take a sledgehammer to the thing, everyone at work will appreciate your sense of style, and it’s not because of the skinny tie your wearing.  “But everyone said they liked my skinny tie!”  They also said you looked like Jabba The Hutt when you dressed up as the green lantern last Halloween.

void0

As you can see, the Creeper mug isn’t your typical coffee mug, but it is your typical “captured a Creeper and DRILLED A HOLE THROUGH ITS SKULL TO CREATE A RESERVOIR FOR MY COFFEE.”  While that may be a little harsh at the moment, next time you strike diamond and then get destroyed by a Creeper, revisit your thinking and make another judgement.

You can pick up this wonderfully geeky coffee mug for about $21(USD) in about 3-4 weeks, but you can pre-order it now to ensure your satisfaction in the future.  Not everything involves instant gratification, you know, and patience is a bird-chew.  “Is it?  Is it a bird-chew?”  I believe it is, my friend, I believe it is.  Cleaned it off my windshield yesterday.

If you’re looking for some more Minecraft fun, check out the Periodic Table of Minecraft and the Real Life Minecraft Blocks if you’re cool enough.

Pokémon Etch-A-Sketch: Nintendo ES

When I was a kid, I never thought much of the Etch-A-Sketch. But a tool is only as good as the one using it. Did I just insult myself? I think I just praised Jane Labowitch, who calls herself Princess Etch-A-Sketch. And for good reason.

Now that’s Pokémon Black-and-White. Below are her other Pokémon Etch-A-Sketches:

I wonder how long it would take to animate one battle sequence on an Etch-A-Sketch. Check out Jane’s deviantART page for more of her work, including her awesome business card.
