Papercraft Minecraft Terrains: Wallcraft

3D printing is perfect for making Minecraft products. But that doesn’t mean you can’t use your ol’ 2D printer to bring your in-game creations to the real world. Laboratory 424 has made templates of Minecraft blocks that you can print, fold and then mount using adhesive foam.  papercraft minecraft terrain 4

Yep, each block in the picture above was printed, folded and attached individually. But this should be a cakewalk compared to the stuff you’ve built in the game right?

Head to Laboratory 424 for the full how-to and links to the templates and other materials. I suggest you start small, not because it’s difficult but because the cost for the adhesive foam blocks will add up quick.

Zelda Triforce Necklace: Gold Pendant of Courage (and Power and Wisdom)

Add this simple but beautiful chain and pendant set to your Legend of Zelda jewelry collection. It’s made of hand-polished brass with 18k gold plating. Flashy, but it’s also an appropriate likeness for something that’s also known as the Golden Power.

There’s also a stainless steel version for humble heroes.

Final Fantasy VII Finally Gets Remade… In LittleBigPlanet 2

Still waiting for a PS3 port of Final Fantasy VII? Wait some more. Because this is not it. It’s the next best thing though: a remake of the entire game on LittleBigPlanet 2, that includes “all conversations, sound tracks, characters, bosses, and enemies.”

final fantasy vii littlebigplanet 2 remake

The geeky feat was made by one Jamie Colliver, who spent a total of 6 months making the 20 levels needed to remake the PlayStation classic. Jamie even managed to mimic the materia and limit break system. He didn’t have to mimic the costumes though, thanks to the official Final Fantasy VII costume pack. Below is the first of 6 videos showing Colliver playing through the levels.

Bravo. The rest of the videos are on Jamie’s YouTube page. Someone give him an Elgato Game Capture or something so we can see the levels the way they were meant to be seen. Meanwhile those of you who have LBP 2 can look at and play the levels for yourselves. Just look for Jamie’s PSN ID “BRRPPPPPPPPPPPPP” (that’s 13 P’s).

TARDIS Trash Can: for Doctor Oscar the Grouch

Looking for a trash can that’ll take your garbage to another time and space? Or how about one that’s way bigger on the inside? This trash can’t do any of that. That’s what your imagination is for.

To help you make up stories about the adventures of your leftover food and scratch paper, the trash can has a police light that turns on when you open the lid. It will then play the dematerializing sound effect when the lid closes.

Proof that it’s not bigger on the inside:

What this trash can can do is make a lot of your money disappear, never to be seen again. ThinkGeek is selling it for a whopping $90 (USD).

Mega Man Hoodie Has an Ace Up Its Sleeve

…and by ace I mean a Mega Buster. This rockin’ Rockman (aka Mega Man) hoodie is a collaboration between Capcom and Japanese apparel company Punk Drunkers. It has lots of references to the blue bomber, but its main trick is its left sleeve, which when rolled up reveals a textile replica of Mega Man’s staple weapon.

The hood obviously resembles Mega Man’s helmet, the pockets are a nod to the Energy Tank and there’s a stitching of pixelated Mega Man at the back.

You can pre-order the hoodie from Punk Drunkers for ¥14,700 (approx. $190 (USD)); they’ll start shipping this October. I’m not sure if they’ll accept international orders, but if not there are still ways around that.

Kinect Hack Helps Disabled Mom Send Email

Chad Ruble’s mom has aphasia, a condition she acquired because of a stroke that she had 12 years ago. Like many other people with aphasia, Chad’s mom has a hard time reading and writing, so she can’t use email the way the rest of us do. But with the help of Chad and a Microsoft Kinect, she can now send simple emails.

kinect email hack by chad ruble

Chad made a “visual dashboard” that shows a range of emoticons as well as signal bars to help her mom indicate the intensity of those emotions, e.g. there’s an icon for happiness, and the signal bars let her specify how happy she is.

He then used a Kinect and a program he based on open source code to track his mom’s hand as well as to generate and send the email.

It’s okay. I cried a bit too. Wipe your tears and head to Chad’s blog for more details on his hack. I wonder if the dashboard would be easier to use via a touchscreen device.

Book Scarves: Wear the Greatest Stories Ever Told… Around Your Neck

Stories are more than just mere words on paper. They have the power to carry you off to faraway lands while making you care for characters as if they were your friends in real life. Stories can also serve as your temporary escape from the real world whenever you need to take a break from real life.

Given the power of said books, I think it’s just appropriate to pay homage to them at least once in a while. That’s exactly what Tori Iannario did by coming up with this series of Wrap Up With A Good Book scarves.

Book Scarves1
They’re basically lightweight scarves with text from some of the most renowned works in the literary world screenprinted on them, like Pride and PrejudicePersuasionJane Eyre, and Tale of Two Cities.

Book Scarves

They’re a great gift for the librarian or English lit major in your life – though they might be a little difficult to read when they’re wearing one. The story scarves are available on Tori’s storiarts Etsy shop for $39.99(USD) each.

Old Apple Mouse Gets a (Blue)tooth Transplant

Unless you frequently game on your PC or you have extraordinarily strong fingers, chances are your old computer mice still work. The folks at The Unconventional Hacker have figured out a way to transfer more modern guts to an old wired mouse, turning it into a wireless Bluetooth mouse.

The Unconventional Hacker sacrificed a cheap Bluetooth mouse to revive a 1986 Apple Desktop Bus mouse, but as Lifehacker noted, there’s a good chance you can do this with other mice as well. Basically you need to transfer the motherboard of the newer mouse into your older mouse. This might require a bit of improvisation on your part, but that’s what tinkerers live for. You gotta work hard for the privilege of using a one-button mouse again.

Artist Turns Geeky Characters into Fat Cats

Etsy is a great place to find wonderful handmade crafts, and every once in a while I come across something I can honestly say I’ve not seen before. What we have here is some of our favorite sci-fi, movie and video game characters – all transformed into fat cats by Kathleen over at Fat Cat Crafts.

boba fett fat catt

Oh, and these aren’t just any overweight felines, no. The cats of Fat Cat Crafts all function as pincushions, so if you’re into sewing, you can keep your spare needles and pins in them. (Or if you just want to put a voodoo curse on your cat.) My favorite has to be the highly-detailed Boba Fett fat cat (Boba Fatt?), complete with jet pack, though I do like the sound of  ”Shat Fat Cat” rolling off of my tongue too…

Among Kathleen’s other handmade creations are Han Solo, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Mario, Luigi, Doctor Who, Obi Wan Kenobi and Indiana Jones (complete with pipe-cleaner whip) – all in fat cat form.

Nintendo Risk Might as Well Be Called Nintendo Reward

A labor of love 7 years in the making, this heavily customized, Nintendo-themed variant of Risk was made by – drum roll please – redditor NintendoRisk. Instead of our countries and continents, the territories are places from various classic Nintendo games, including the Kanto region, Hyrule, Eagleland, Dinosaur Island and more. It also has aerial territories such as Zebes and the Great Fox ship.

nintendo risk board game

The art looks really good, not just the stuff on the board, but on the cards – there are 100 Hero and 42 Territory cards – as well. NintendoRisk said that all of the artwork is in high resolution. The board for example is about 20,000 pixels wide and its digital copy is about 700MB.

My only suggestion would be to add a border graphic of some sort on the board. I’m sure NintendoRisk can fill it up with Nintendo’s vast cache of characters and icons.
