TomTom Runner and TomTom Multi-Sport GPS Watches

TomTom Runner and TomTom Multi Sport GPS Watches
Back in January 2011, TomTom partnered with Nike to launch the Nike+ SportWatch GPS at CES. Today, the Netherlands-based company is releasing its own GPS watch lineup, and the first products are the TomTom Runner and the TomTom Multi-Sport.

The recent advances in wireless and sensors, in connection with the components and app development price drop, have enabled the democratization of wearable technology. The recent launches of the popular Jawbone Up and the Nike+ Fuelband are good examples of this trend which is becoming mainstream.

With the in-cars GPS receivers market going down, due to the efficiency of the smartphones in that area, TomTom had to find new revenue streams in the consumer market.

TomTom paid an extra attention to what sport-enthusiasts want to monitor when they run, bike or swim without interrupting their workout.

Harvard Students Plan To Use 3D Printing To Help The Blind “See” Art

Harvard Students Plan To Use 3D Printing To Help The Blind See ArtWhile there are blind painters who are able to create masterpieces, have you ever wondered about the rest of the blind or visually impaired population and how they appreciate art? Considering that they cannot see, and since most paintings have a “no touching” policy, it would be almost impossible, right? Well looking to change that and allow the blind to enjoy pieces of art just like everyone else, a group of Harvard students have embarked on a project called “Midas Touch”, which essentially takes advantage of 3D printing to allow the blind to “see” pieces of art.

The concept behind Midas Touch is simple – regular flat images, such as Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night, are printed in 3D with layers of texture on top of it to help the blind or visually impaired “see”, or rather feel, the art. It should be noted that this is purely theoretical at this point and that the team is currently working on prototypes to prove that their idea has merit. After all, braille has been designed to allow the blind to read, so couldn’t something similar be done for art as well? The team is currently trying overcome some hurdles, one of which involves color, as in how do they translate color into a feeling. Pretty cool stuff and we can’t wait to see where they can take it.

Twitter ‘Home’ Like App Is A Possibility

Twitter Home Like App Is A Possibility

Only recently Facebook announced Home, its latest software offering for Android. Its a custom skin that sits on top of the core Android OS, without making any changes to the underlying OS, Home presents its users a new way to interact with their friends as well as their smartphones. So many people have been asking whether Twitter will follow suit? Will it ever release an app that offers functionality similar to that of Home? Well it certainly is a possibility.

Michael Sippey, the vice president of product at Twitter, said that there were a lot of things that the company was looking at in Android as well as across all of their applications so as to make it easier for users to discover tweets. He says that he does want to see tweets on the lock screen and on the home screen. It remains to be seen whether Twitter will also indulge in creating a skin for Android devices like Facebook did, or whether it will partner up with a manufacturer to release a feature smartphone? Only time will tell.

WhatsApp CEO Says They Have More Users Than Twitter

After Facebook and its 1 billion plus users, Twitter is perhaps the most widely used social network. Back in December Twitter announced that it had more than 200 million monthly users. Today at a conference WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum revealed that the popular cross platform messaging service has more users than Twitter. Confirming that they had more users than Twitter, Jan however did not reveal any specific figures which will obviously be over 200 million. He also revealed that WhatsApp handles some 12 billion outbound messages and 8 billion in bound messages every single day.

Recently we were hearing rumors that Google was willing to acquire the service for up to $1 billion, these rumors were quickly shot down by Neeraj Arora, the business development head at WhatsApp. Today Jan touched on this subject as well, saying that they wanted to build a sustainable and independent company, to build a business and that acquisition is not really a viable exit strategy for them. While Twitter and WhatsApp are in two entirely different niches, it is interesting to see just how quickly a cross platform messaging service has gained a surge in its user base.

Outlook.com Android App Update Brings New UI And Features

The Outlook.com Android app was previously updated back in November last year. Today Microsoft has announced a new update for this app, which brings an overhaul for the entire user interface as well as new features. Microsoft says that the overall response to Outlook.com has been very positive, but their Android app was quite behind. They say they’re very excited to take this large step forward, which will give Android users the same look and feel of the e-mail service as they’ve seen on Windows 8 as well as on the web.

Apart from bringing the UI at par with other platforms, the updated Outlook.com Android app comes with a host of new features that greatly enhance user experience. These include filters for unread and flagged mail, threading of conversations and the ability to mark email messages as junk. The updated Outlook.com app can be grabbed right now from Google Play Store. It will be supported by any device running Android firmware version 2.2 or higher. Initial user reviews on the Play Store indicate that the new UI is being appreciated a lot.

Android Malware Infections Tripled In 2012

Android Malware Infections Tripled In 2012The smartphone used to be a safe environment to develop for, especially in its early days when there was no such thing as malware or viruses, or other kinds of malicious code. Well, times have definitely changed over the years, where the explosive growth of smartphones have led to numerous “backdoors” being discovered in mobile operating systems, and it seems that there is a concentrated effort in developing malicious software for the Android platform in this season.

Mobile security vendor NQ mentioned that the total number of reported Android devices infected with malware grew from 10.8 million in 2011 to 32.8 million in 2012, while would translate to a 300% increase year-over-year, with nearly 95% of malware detected in 2012 being limited to the Android platform, which means that Google’s mobile operating system is almost the de facto target for potential cybercriminals. Interestingly enough, majority of the mobile malware infections reported happened in China, India and Russia. You know what to do to stay safe – download only apps that are certified and from official sources.

Taiwan Investigating Samsung For Using Dirty Advertisement Tricks Against HTC

Samsung is in the news again, the controversial side of it. Taiwanese authorities are investigating Samsung over allegations that it used dirty advertisement tactics against HTC. Samsung is accused of hiring students to post malicious comments about HTC online. The Fair Trade Commission spokesman said that this case was set up last week after they had received complaints. If Samsung is found guilty of indulging in such practices, it and its local advertising agent could face a fine of up to Tw$25 million or approximately US$835,000.

The students were hired by Samsung’s local advertising agency to write malicious articles against HTC online and to recommend Samsung’s products over its rival’s. Samsung Taiwan’s Facebook page was update with a statement saying that the company regretted any inconvenience and confusion caused by this incident. It also said that Samsung Taiwan has stopped all internet marketing, which includes posting of anonymous comments. It’s not like HTC is a substantial threat for Samsung at this stage, the latter held 30.3% of the global smartphone market as opposed to the former’s hold of 4.3%. Lets see what the investigation turns up.

Star Wars Guitars Places Millennium Falcon At Your Fingertips

We’ve seen some impressive guitar mods in the past couple of months as we’ve seen one that is shaped like an NES, while another types out certain keys on a computer depending on what notes you play. But have you seen guitars that are are to look like the Millennium Falcon, a Y-Wing and a B-Wing from Star Wars?

These guitars were created by 64-year-old Tom Bingham for himself as he has said he doesn’t plan on selling them. Each guitar took Bingham around three months to build, which he has a total of 20 other guitar designs, a number of which have nothing to do with Star Wars such as his chessboard guitar and his vinyl record guitar. His Millennium Falcon Guitar was used by attaching the neck of a guitar to a replica, which he also equipped with flashing LEDs in the back to give it a “hyperdrive look.” (more…)

Spotify Reportedly Expanding To Eight New Markets

Spotify Reportedly Expanding To Eight New Markets

Spotify is a very popular music streaming service, boasting over 24 million users which it gained in a short span of one and a half years. Launched in the U.S. Spotify is the fastest growing digital music company and out of those 24 million users, 6 million have paid subscriptions. Currently only available in 20 markets, no doubt expanding its services around the globe is a vital goal for Spotify. A person “familiar with the situation” claims that Spotify is going to add eight new markets, which include territories such as Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Iceland, the Baltics and Mexico. In these new markets, Spotify’s services on both PCs and mobile devices will be in the local languages.

With competition from big companies with big pocketbooks, such as Apple, Amazon and Google, Spotify has been working really hard to establish more ground for itself. Brand building campaigns are being run, these include Spotify’s first TV campaign which started last month and it’s advertisements on YouTube. The only caveat in entering new markets when you’re in the digital music business is that every market has its own set of rules and regulations. Negotiations must be made while keeping them in mind, which end up slowing down expansion. No word as yet regarding when the expansion will begin, probably in the near future.

Skype For Windows Phone 8 Loses Beta Tag In New Update

Skype For Windows Phone 8 Loses Beta Tag In New Update

Today Microsoft has released a new update of the Skype for Windows Phone 8 app. The beta tag that previously accompanied this app has now been dropped in the latest update, which brings the version number up to 2.5. Despite that, there aren’t any substantial new features in this update. The new Skype for Windows Phone 8 version 2.5 is now available for download from the Windows Phone Store.

The new app update primarily brings general improvements and better reliability. Various bugs have been fixed which plagued both chat and video chat, they’ve also fixed some crashes. The only new tweak in this update is the change of handling of Messenger buddies in the app. The Skype app now be default displays message notifications for Messenger buddies. Microsoft hasn’t clarified one thing, since Windows Phone 8 has Messenger integrated, wouldn’t this mean that users will get notifications from both the Skype and built in Messenger apps? Perhaps the company has disabled the integrated Messenger app’s notifications? The company has yet to say something on this matter, we’ll let you know when they release an official statement.
