Comcast Encrypting Basic Cable In The Near Future

Comcast Encrypting Basic Cable In The Near Future

The FCC permitted cable providers to encrypt basic cable towards the end of last year and now Comcast has detailed its plans for moving ahead with cable encryption. Those who do not use a CableCard enabled device or a Comcast set-top box will need to install an adapter so that they can keep watching encrypted cable. That is why Comcast has already begun telling its subscribers in some markets that it is going to encrypt cable over the coming months. Boxee TV users will also have an adapter available for them.

The adapter boxes for such customers will be offered free for two years, but they have to be requested during the period in which they’re being offered. Those who receive Medicaid have the option of five years. After the relevant time passes, the boxes will bear a monthly rental fee of $.50. The company has said that it will be rolling out basic cable encryption on a market-by-market basis over the next few months. Comcast says this move will provide greater convenience for their customers and will reduce the need for scheduled in-home appointments.

Sony Backed ISP In Japan Offers Double The Speed Of Google Fiber

Sony Backed ISP In Japan Offers Double The Speed Of Google Fiber

If you thought Google Fiber with its 1Gbps speeds was fast, think again. A Japanese ISP, which is backed by Sony, is now offering plans with 2Gbps download and 1Gbps upload speeds in Tokyo and six districts surrounding it. So-net Entertainment is now offering this service to small businesses, apartments and homes in the aforementioned locations. The fiber based service is called Nuro which uses GPON, or Gigabit-capable Passive Optics Networks, that is able to support download speeds up to 2.488 Gbps. The service costs ¥4,980 or approximately US$51 per month with a two-year contract. There’s also a ¥52,500 installation fee which is being waived if the customer applies online for the service.

The caveat with such high speeds is that the average user won’t exactly be able to extract the full benefit. Generally, computers can only accept up to one gigabyte and that too through a wired connection. It is much worse over Wi-Fi. The benefit isn’t much for individual users, but such high speed connection will definitely benefit multiple users, as the connection can better handle the increased load from different users.

Land For Thirty Meter Telescope Finally Okayed By Hawaii

Land For Thirty Meter Telescope Finally Okayed By Hawaii

The Hawaiian Board of Land and Natural Resources announced on Thursday that it had granted a land permit for Thirty Meter Telescope, which is a next generation observatory being built close to the summit of Mauna Kea. With the grant of this Conservation District Use Permit, the Thirty Meter Telescope is now one step closer to being constructed. The permit comes with certain conditions so as to ensure protection of sensitive environments in Hawaii. Construction plans need a final approval from Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources. Construction ground is expected to be prepared by the end of this year, whereas start date for construction is pegged for April next year.

If the work starts on schedule and there are no setbacks along the way, this next generation observatory will begin scientific operations in 2021. The Thirty Meter Telescope is a project on which a number of universities and institutions have collaborated upon. It is said to have nine times the coverage area and three times the sharpness of any such telescope, and will be able to track extrasolar planets and stars throughout the Milky way and those in neighboring galaxies.

U.S. To Form Working Group With China On Cybersecurity

In recent months we have heard both U.S. and China bicker back and forth on cyber attacks originating from the other’s homeland, but now both of them will be collectively working on cybersecurity. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, during a visit to Beijing, revealed that both countries had agreed to speed up action on cybersecurity and had also agreed to form a working group for the purpose. This development should put an end to the hacking accusations from both sides, but it is not clear as of now what the collaboration will result in. China’s Foreign Minister has been quoted as saying that both China and U.S. should make joint efforts so as to safeguard cyberspace.

Back in February a security firm based in U.S. released a report stating that the military of China had a secret unit which behind many hacking attacks against the country. On the other hand, China says that the country had been victim of cyber attacks from the U.S. on a large scale. Both countries will also be forming a working group that will be focused towards climate change.

Bathroom Usage Monitor (BUM) Should Be Compulsory In Offices

Bathroom Usage Monitor (BUM) Should Be Compulsory In OfficesYou know what they say, when nature calls, you simply got to go without taking detours. The thing is, if you happen to work in a huge office with limited bathrooms, timing is of the essence, not to mention the disappointment of having rushed all the way to the bathroom door only to find out that it has been occupied. Good to know that necessity being the mother of invention, has resulted in the Bathroom Usage Monitor, or BUM for short.

The BUM was developed by employees at Sanborn Media Factory where it will allow office drones to know just when a particular bathroom or restroom is free, and this is done via a desktop app. A light sensor and wireless connection were all it took for the BUM software to work, where you will be alerted each time there is a vacancy, with the option to clicking on the icon to check on its “occupancy rate” at your whim and fancy. Right now, the app does not alert you of gender-specific bathrooms, but I don’t suppose with a little bit more tweaks done to it, one is able to check out additional features?

BIQ House Is Algae-Powered Building

BIQ House Is Algae Powered BuildingI think most of us would agree that algae is disgusting stuff, being green, slimy and mushy, making you slip and fall at times when you are not careful. Does it have a role to play in our lives? Certainly, which was why Sir Alexander Fleming did not throw away that petri dish of his that contained some algae growing, resulting in him discovering penicillin. This time around, mankind has another benefit from algae, which has been used to create bio-diesel that will power the recently opened BIQ House, making it the first building to be powered by algae.

The BIQ House is an installation that was created by design firms Splitterwerk, Arup and SSC, where it has also been entered into Hamburg’s International building exhibition. Described as a highly adaptive, self-sufficient building, it is capable of functioning as a prototype for future algae construction projects. When you supply the BIQ House with adequate levels of water, CO2, and sunlight, this is where it all ties in together nicely. The algae will be used as a “bio skin” of sorts upon the facade of a building, where growth is at its peak during the warmer months, resulting in a cooling effect for its occupants while transferring heat from the sun to hot water systems. Once the algae has maximized its room for growth, it will be harvested and sent to the BIQ House’s technical room, where it is then fed into a biomass fuel converter to help provide for the other energy requirements of the building. You certainly cannot get any more green than that!

LinkedIn Confirms Pulse News Purchase

LinkedIn Confirms Pulse News PurchaseBusiness networking site LinkedIn did make a few quick rounds sometime in the middle of March this year concerning the possibility of them purchasing Pulse News for a cool $90 million. Well, I guess as with all other good rumors out there, these will either be confirmed or debunked in due time, and the same applies with this particular rumor where both companies – LinkedIn as well as Pulse News, did confirm earlier this morning that the former has already purchased the latter, although there was no mention on the total amount.

We do know that Pulse happens to have over 30 million users and 750 million publishing partners around the world, where LinkedIn is capable of visioning both companies working hand in hand, delivering and producing content for professionals, by professionals. LinkedIn themselves have over 200 million members, where 155 million of them are unique monthly visitors, and it remains to be seen whether Pulse’s apps will continue to operate or not, or will there be new features in the pipeline. Do you think that this is good business for LinkedIn?

Sprint LTE Coming To 21 New Markets On April 12

Sprint LTE Coming To 21 New Markets On April 12

Only yesterday AT&T announced that it was expanding its LTE network to six new markets. Verizon has its network out in most markets, nearly 500 to be precise. Sprint is the third largest carrier in U.S. and it too is slowly but surely expanding its LTE net. It is being reported that Sprint will be adding 21 new LTE markets on the 12th of April.

If you’re based in these markets and have a Sprint LTE compatible device, you’ll have access to download speeds of up to 6-8Mbps, peaking at 25Mbps, and download speeds of up to 2-3Mbps. The entire list of these new markets can be viewed in the image posted above. It is nice to see that all major carriers in the U.S. are seriously expanding their LTE networks. T-Mobile only recently got off the line, with it’s network being available in seven markets as of now. AT&T currently covers 182 markets, it is expected to add 77 more by the end of this summer. Right now, Verizon’s network is ahead of everyone else, with the carrier expected to be done with LTE deployment in a couple of months.

Software Programmers Can Now Have Agents Represent Them And Find Them Work

Software Programmers Can Now Have Agents Represent Them And Find Them WorkWhen you think of agents in the Hollywood context, you probably think of rock stars, actors/actresses, and pop singers who have people to help manage their career, find them new jobs, promote them and so on. It sounds pretty cool, right? Well it seems that if you live in Silicon Valley and you’re a “top coder”, it looks like there are agents out there who are willing to represent you and your career as well! This code agency known as 10X Management, was started up by Altay Guvench and two of his friends a year ago. Their job is to find freelance software programmers and help them get jobs, negotiate salaries and to help them track payments and bills, allowing the programmers to focus on what they do best – program!

Of course like rock stars and high-profile actors/actresses, not every code is worthy of having an agent. In order to be represented by 10X Management, a programmer needs to have their code reviewed by the company for quality checking purposes, and go through an interview process as well before they are deemed fit to be represented. Guvench admits that some companies are a bit taken aback when they find out they are talking to an agent for a programmer, but he claims that the companies they work with tend to appreciate the process in the end. Interesting stuff, what do you guys think?
