Apple Job Listing Pulled, Possible Flexible Display Down The Road

Apple Job Listing Pulled, Possible Flexible Display Down The RoadA job listing by Apple for the position of a Senior Optical Engineer was posted on April 1, and after 9 days, it seems that Apple has pulled down that particular listing. This removal would certainly raise eyebrows, especially when the job listing did look for “a Display Specialist to lead the investigation on emerging display technologies such as high optical efficiency LCD, AMOLED and flexible displays”, which would most probably also see the opportunity to work with a pair of patents that Apple was recently awarded based on flexible devices which could alter operating modes depending on how the user manipulates the display.

While the job listing has been removed, those who saw it earlier on continued to share with the world that this particular position required an “in-depth understanding of display technology, particularly LCD & OLED design & optical performance trade-offs, including optical design, viewing angle, color and white point management, gamma and dimming control, visual performance and artifacts; and characterization metrics.” It would be interesting to see how Apple’s flexible display capable device would look like, if it ever rolls off the production line.

Japanese Students Create ‘Girlfriend Coat’ To Simulate Hugs

The simple embrace of a loved one can provide some serious stimulation as you can feel all warm and good from something as simple as a hug. But there are people out there who have yet to know the joy of what it’s like to get a hug from a girlfriend or boyfriend as well as a sweet nothing into your ear, which is why a bunch of Japanese students decided to let technology give them the embrace they need.

Students at the University of Tsukuba created a coat that would give the wearer the sensation they are being hugged from behind by their girlfriend. The Riajuu Coat, as it’s called, uses a combination of a jacket, headphones and a belt that tightens around the wearer’s waist in order to get the feeling of a hug at that location. Judging by the sound of the virtual girlfriends included in the attached video, we have a feeling these Japanese students might have seen one too many animes.

Burner App Brings Disposable Phone Numbers For Android Users

Burner is a popular app for the iPhone, it provides users with disposable phone numbers that they can use to make calls or send text messages or receive calls, texts and voicemails. The app comes in handy when the user might want to protect their identity. Surely one can think of the app being used for wrongful purposes as well, but there are advantages. It all depends upon the user. Burner has been available for iPhone for quite a while, today it was finally released for Android.

Burner for Android comes with one free disposable number which can be used for a five minute call or 15 text messages. The number is valid for one day only. When it expires, users can either choose to extend its life or buy additional new numbers via in-app purchases. The base price plan for a disposable number is of $2 which offers a week’s validity, 60 text messages and 20 minutes of calling. It is available for download via Google Play Store. U.S. Postal Service No Longer Planning On Ending Saturday Mail Delivery

Back in February, the U.S. Postal Service announced its plans to end Saturday mail delivery for regular mail, such as letters, although the organization would still continue delivering packages. It looks as though USPS is retracting their plans to stop Saturday mail service according to a recently published memo.

In the memo, USPS pointed blame squarely at Congress for passing a continuing budget resolution that would prohibit a new mail delivery schedule. Congress wrote in the budget resolution they would continue funding of the USPS as long as it was able to maiming the same level of service it did since 1983. (more…)

Foursquare 6.0 Update Puts Its Explore Engine Front And Center

Foursquare has become one of the most widely used services for checking in to all kinds of locations. It is also used to keeping an eye on the places where your friends might be hanging out. To date the service has been used for over 3.5 billion check ins, needless to say that Foursquare’s user-base encompasses the entire globe. Today Foursquare 6.0 update for iOS and Android was released and it greatly revamps the service’s Explore engine, used for recommendations.

The biggest change one can see is up top, where the Foursquare logo has been replaced by new search box that invites users to ‘Explore nearby’, and also features a much better auto-complete engine. The main feed now shows recommendations, places that are trending and friends that are nearby. Previously it only used to be a list of friends. The new app will immediately show users nearby friends and most interesting places around them. Recommendations will be based on the what’s popular at the moment, user’s familiarity with the neighborhood they’re in and the time of day. The check-in button has been moved to the bottom, it previously used to be in the top right corner. The iOS and Android versions are now available for download.

AT&T Rolls Out LTE To Six New Markets

AT&T Rolls Out LTE To Six New Markets

AT&T has announced today that it has added six additional markets to its LTE network. This latest addition brings the total number of markets, in which AT&T’s LTE service is available, up to 182. The carrier also added that it has plans to add another 77 markets by the end of summer 2013. Apart from that, seven existing markets that already have access to LTE now get expanded coverage. The new markets include Jackson, Tenn., Kalamazoo, Mo., Napa, Calif., Orangeburg, S.C., Rocky Mount-Wilson, N.C., and Santa Rosa-Petaluma, Calif.

Verizon Wireless is the clear leader in the LTE market, its network is available to almost 500 markets. AT&T is not even offering its service in even half of that number, so one can understand their frantic efforts to upgrade and expand. Verizon is expected to be done with LTE deployment in a couple of months. As far as speeds are concerned, AT&T is adamant that it offers the highest 4G LTE speeds in the country. Other carries such as T-Mobile and Sprint have been slow of the line. T-Mobile only recently announced its LTE network which is only available in seven markets as of now.

Police Search Samsung Office In OLED Technology Leak Probe

Police Search Samsung Office In OLED Technology Leak ProbeSamsung and LG might be from the same country, but they are fierce and bitter rivals when it comes to the consumer electronics business. While Samsung already has a slew of court cases worldwide against Apple, there is the possibility that they have another front to wage war with – against LG, no thanks to the latter accusing Samsung of stealing their technology. This has led to South Korean police searching the offices of Samsung Electronics Co. that were located in Asan, south of the capital, looking for documents which are related to the technology.

The police are looking into whether partners of LG Display Co. leaked technology secrets, and to determine the involvement level of Samsung, said Samsung spokesperson Nathan Kim. In July last year, half a dozen employees of LG Display were charged concerning the theft of OLED technology from Samsung, and another spokesperson for Samsung proudly declared, “We have no reason to steal other companies’ technology, as we have the world’s best OLED technology.” Do you think Samsung is guilty in this case? I sure hope not.

Vudu User Data Stolen, Passwords Reset

Vudu User Data Stolen, Passwords ResetVudu informed users earlier today that they experienced a break-in at its offices sometime last month (March 24th to be exact) has resulted in users’ personal information being compromised, in addition to their account activity of course. Vudu has since warned their customers to be on the lookout for “spam email, emails asking for personal information, or emails asking you to click on links to other websites”, where the streaming video provider also mentioned that “a number of items were stolen, including hard drives” when their Santa Clara, California.-based offices were burgled.

Vudu has gone on to say that they will perform a system-wide password reset because said hard drives held extremely sensitive data such as user emails, addresses, account activity, dates of birth, and for select cases, credit card information. So far, the burglary has been reported to the relevant law enforcement agencies, and they are cooperating fully with their investigation. It is rather unfortunate that such a thing had happened, but I guess the best one can do is learn from the situation and hope to avoid it down the road.

Boxee Box Rebranded To Cloud DVR

Boxee Box Rebranded To Cloud DVRBoxee has just lifted the curtain on a new offering for a cloud-based DVR, where this rebranded Boxee TV has been given a new moniker, which would be the Boxee Cloud DVR that delivers up to five hours of DVR playback each month when it comes to the new free plan for users of the hardware. If you are one who participated in the paid tier, then unlimited, indefinite storage would still be available.

The first round of rollout would be limited to just eight major metropolitan areas, and they will include Washington DC, New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Los Angeles. There will be some suburbs thrown into the mix which are part of the associated metro area, and Boxee has hopes to expand to more than 20 areas for the DVR functionality before the year is over. Recording will be limited to channels that are received over-the-air by the Boxee Cloud DVR. Some things will remain the same though, as the device streams Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, Pandora, MLB.TV, and Spotify content. You can pick up the Boxee Cloud DVR (Boxee TV) set top box for $99.
