Google I/O 2013 Tickets Sold Out

Google I/O 2013 Tickets Sold OutI think that it is a given these days whenever a company with a particularly large or fanatical following hold an event or conference, tickets to such events and conferences will be snapped up fast as there are limited places available. The thing is, with the advent of the online purchase system, selling such tickets are a whole lot easier, and it would not be surprising to see such events sold out in a matter of hours, or even minutes. Well, we bring you word that the tickets for this year’s Google I/O conference have already been sold out, taking less than an hour to do so, although it did not manage to break last year’s 30 minute sell out record.

Regular attendees will have to fork out $900 per head, while students and faculty staff are able to enjoy a far lower rate at $300 per ticket. If last year were to be of any indication, attendees to Google I/O tend to walk away not empty handed, but rather, receive a slew of high-tech devices from the announcement that should easily match or surpass what you have paid for in the first place.

Android Leader Andy Rubin Steps Down

Android Leader Andy Rubin Steps Down

Google’s CEO Larry Page has announced that Andy Rubin, the founder of Android is stepping down from this role as the leader of the Android group, but will remain at Google to work on another project. “Andy’s decided it’s time to hand over the reins and start a new chapter at Google. Andy, more moonshots please!” says Larry Page.

Sundar Pichai will succeed to Andy Rubin, and you may know Sundar for his work on Chrome and Apps. We’ve recently talked to him when he showed us Google’s latest Chrome Pixel computer, a high-end Chromebook cloud computer that comes with a sleek design and powerful hardware.

We wonder what Andy Rubin will work on next (Google’s X labs?), but it’s fair to give him the credit that he deserves for building Android and convincing Google to back his project in the first place. As Larry Page mentioned, Android is now the most popular mobile OS in the world, and has been used in 750 Million devices to date. It is clear that the Billion mark will be crossed in the near future.

In case you didn’t know, Android was once a startup founded by Andy Rubin, which got acquired by Google. Andy’s vision was that it would be possible to create better standards in the mobile world in order to drive innovation. For this to work, Andy was convinced that it needed to be open-source.  The rest is now history. It is unclear how the change of leadership will affect the development of Android, if at all – what do you think?

DRM Chair Falls Apart After 8 Sits

DRM Chair Falls Apart After 8 SitsYou know for sure that when a piece of furniture is called the DRM Chair, it is more of a statement than an effort to rack up the sales figures and make someone at the top very, very rich. Just in case the DRM acronym sounds familiar to you, that is because DRM stands for Digital Rights Management which is a “weapon” to combat piracy, and it has proved to be a divisive issue among software consumers for years. With the DRM Chair, it “pays homage”, so to speak, by virtue of being a furniture that was specially rigged in order to fall apart after it has been sat on for eight times.

The team has wisely opted to ditch charges made of gunpowder, in lieu of a design where individual pieces of the wooden chair that are held together will rely on wax joints that have been fitted with nichrome wire. There is an Arduino-based mechanism that is connected to a contact switch which will know just how many times someone has planted his or her rear end on it, knocking on the wood each time they get up, to show just how many times left you can seat on the DRM Chair. After 8 sits, the self-destruct system will kick in, where the wire heats up until all joints have melted, turning it into a worthless piece of furniture. Sure heck of a way to get your message across, no?

Toshiba’s Transparent Wireless OLED Lamp

Toshiba’s Transparent Wireless OLED LampWhen we talk about wireless connectivity, most of the time we might think of wireless networks at the local cafe or restaurant, and to a lesser extent, wireless charging which seems to be the next big thing concerning smartphones these days (no doubt tablets too, would eventually get on the wireless charging action in due time), but how about a wireless lamp? Normal circumstances would point towards a torchlight, but here we are with Toshiba’s brilliant engineers working to create a see-through (read: transparent) OLED lighting panel as well as an OLED lighting panel that supports wireless power transmission, and both of these were demonstrated at the Lighting Fair 2013 in Tokyo, Japan.

Toshiba managed to come up with this “miracle” thanks to the implementation of integrated electromagnetic induction-type wireless power transmission technology within an OLED panel. The result itself will be a configurable light unit which does not require any pesky wires to work, and it is capable of supporting up to 9 wireless OLED panels within a single square frame, where different patterns can be worked out without any physical connection required. As for the new transparent OLED panel, it will emit most of its light in a single direction, hence increasing its energy efficiency while lowering light pollution.

LEGO Machine Can Fold, Throw Paper Airplanes

Creating something out of LEGOs is an art I personally can’t ever do as I don’t have that good of an imagination. But thanks to the Internet, we’ve seen people use LEGOs to build an X-Winga tiny mac and they’ve even been used in mobile accessories. All of those examples of LEGO use are all well and good, but if there’s something we need in our life immediately, it’s a LEGO machine that can fold and throw paper airplanes.

The LEGO machine featured in the video above was created by NXTLOG user hknssn13 which uses 2 NXT micro controller bricks, 5 servos, 10 DC motors, pneumatics, infrared, and additional sensors as well as very steady fingers to complete the machine. At the end of the video, we see the machine fling the plane, although we don’t see how well it does in flight. My guess is that it does exceptionally well and is probably good enough to prop a small LEGO person on top of it to give them a ride of their lives.

Curiosity Rover Discovers Conditions On Mars Suited For Ancient Life

It was late last summer when the Curiosity Rover made landed on Mars, and several months later, has stumbled onto an important discovery during its time on the red planet.

According to a NASA press release sent out today, the Curiosity Rover has come across conditions that could have supported living microbes. Lead Mars Exploration Program scientist Michael Meyer laid out today’s discovery.

“A fundamental question for this mission is whether Mars could have supported a habitable environment. From what we know now, the answer is yes.” (more…)

Study Finds That We Burn 1.42 Calories With Every Mouse Click

Study Finds That We Burn 1.42 Calories With Every Mouse ClickWhenever we type, click or move the mouse, an action is required which means that at some level, calories are being burnt. However it is obvious that no one has lost massive amounts of weight simply by sitting in front of the computer and clicking the mouse, but have you ever wondered how many calories a mouse click actually burns? In a recent study by the name of “Convert Anything to Calories”, published by the PHP Science World, it has been found that the number of calories an average person burns per mouse click is 1.42. This is calculated by measuring the “the total volume of the muscles used to bend the index finger.”

Now before you start clicking frantically away at that mouse, it should be noted that the measurement used is calories, instead of kilocalories (also known as kcal) which is typically used when talking about the nutritional benefits or food or activities. What this means is that 1,000 calories equates to 1 kcal, meaning that you’d probably wear out your mouse long before you start to see any effects. In any case we expect that this should be somewhat entertaining trivia for those who want to share it with friends.

Sukatto Notebook Helps You Destress

Sukatto Notebook Helps You DestressJapan is well known for their range of quirky items, so here we are with something interesting that might just pique your curiosity to pick one up, or perhaps import an entire carton of it. What we are referring to would be this particular notebook that is known as the Sukatto notebook. What makes the Sukatto notebook different from the rest in the market would be its special design that is easily ripped apart. In fact, the company behind the Sukatto notebook claims that the pages were not made for writing, but for ripping instead.

Imagine writing down all of your frustrations and complaints onto the Sukatto notebook, or perhaps that angry letter at your spouse or other half for leaving the toilet seat up for the umpteenth time despite asking him to put it down when he’s done, followed by ripping that page to pieces! It seems that the developers of the Sukatto notebook claim that throughout their “research”, the paper used here shreds in a way that delivers maximum satisfaction…
