Carrie Fisher Returning As Princess Leia In Star Wars Episode 7

Carrie Fisher Returning As Princess Leia In Star Wars Episode 7

Last month we heard rumors of Harrison Ford possibly returning to reprise his role as Han Solo in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode 7. The news came from a Latino Review reporter, although there were conflicting reports coming in at the same time. Today, on the other hand, isn’t speculation as Carrie Fisher has confirmed she’ll return as Princess Leia in Star Wars: Episode 7.

During an interview with Palm Beach Illustrated, Fisher was asked if she would be coming back as Princess Leia:

Question: Disney is going to continue the Star Wars saga, producing movies set to hit theaters starting in 2015. Can you confirm whether you’ll reprise the role of Princess Leia?

Fisher: Yes.

Reports of Fisher returning as Princess Leia first circulated this past November when she said she would return to the Star Wars franchise, but it was later confirmed her remarks were tongue-in-cheek and in no way confirmed her return.

If reports of Harrison Ford’s return turn out to be true, we’ll personally be calling Mark Hammill on an hourly basis to make sure he’s aware he’s the last piece of the puzzle missing from the old cast returning to a new Star Wars film.

Samsung Invests $111.6 million Into SharpInterestingly despite both Samsung and Sharp being competitors in the form of supplying display panels, it looks like Samsung will be lending Sharp a helping hand in the form of a $111.6 million investment. It is not news that Sharp hasn’t been doing too well recently in terms of their financials, and according to previous reports companies such as Apple, Intel, Qualcomm and even Foxconn were interested in helping out to keep Sharp afloat. Samsung’s investment of $111.6 million will net them a 3% stake in the company, making them the fifth largest stakeholder overall, and the largest individual shareholder that isn’t a financial institution. The deal made by Samsung will also give the South Korean company access to Sharp’s supply of LCD screens, and Sharp is also expected to use the money to help improve their TV and smartphone display panel production.

Sony Reader Store Launches Dedicated Kids Corner

Sony Reader Store Launches Dedicated Kids CornerWhile tablets and smartphones are certainly entertaining devices for children, a balance should be made between playing games, watching videos as well as reading. If your kid finds that reading a book seems like an archaic sort of activity, then perhaps ebooks could be the answer and Sony might have something for you. The company has recently announced that they have launched a special Kids Corner in their Reader Store. While children books are already available electronically, it looks like Sony is hoping to make the discovery of said books a little easier with its dedicated shopping section.

The Kids Corner is expected to feature titles that are illustrated and enhanced, and the Kids Corner will also support the EPUB3.0 format which allows for embedded videos and interactivity within the book itself. The content in the store can be filtered by parents according to age level, and device compatibility will also be stated for every title. At the moment the newly launched Kids Corner will be available in the US and Canada, but no word from Sony if they plan to launch it in other countries. Sony’s Reader Store can be accessed by the computer, as well as Android and iOS tablets and smartphones.

San Francisco Bay Bridge Lights Up Ethernet-Enabled LEDs

San Francisco Bay Bridge Lights Up Ethernet Enabled LEDsThe famous Bay Bridge over at San Francisco is one iconic sight (although not as famous as the Golden Gate, but still..), and it is going to get even more famous now when 25,000 LEDs light up along a section which measures a whopping 1.8 miles in length, every single night for the next two years. It was from Tuesday evening when the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was transformed into a massive, two-year-long public art project that is known as The Bay Lights.

The Bay Lights will be “up for display” until 2am the next day, as a dazzling array of 25,000 LEDs get the job done. Sporting an assortment of seemingly-animated patterns, these LEDs were strung vertically on the bridge’s twisted steel cables. To make matters more interesting, individual LEDs can be addressed over an Ethernet, copper wire, and fiber optic network, where they are filtered by 528 power and data supply boxes. Word has it that a constant stream of around 32Mbps of data flow across that network in order to provide full control for all 25,000 LEDs.

The entire piece of art cost around $8 million in private donations, with a total of approximately $22,000 in electricity bills throughout the two years being part of it, while the rest include installation, maintenance and removal, of course.

Microsoft Slapped With $1 billion In Taxes In Denmark After Reports Of Funneling Profits Overseas

Microsoft Slapped With $1 billion In Taxes In Denmark After Reports Of Funneling Profits OverseasIt is no secret that Microsoft is one of the richer companies around, but it seems that one of the ways Microsoft managed to hold on to their money is by funneling their profits overseas to countries like Bermuda where corporate tax rate is effectively at zero percent. Microsoft isn’t the first company to do that as Apple and Google have said to have been frowned upon by taking advantage of such loopholes. Now it looks like Microsoft has landed themselves in a bit of hot water in Denmark as reports are saying that Danish authorities are looking to slap Microsoft with a tax levy of $1 billion.

This tax levy is over Microsoft’s acquisition of software maker Navavision back in 2002 and according to reports, Microsoft has been relying on Carribean-based shell companies to operate Navavision’s enterprise planning and account units, thus allowing them to funnel profits away from Denmark to Bermuda where they will not be taxed on their profits. Despite Denmark’s modest corporate tax of 25%, it’s still 25% more than what they would have to pay in Bermuda. Microsoft and Danish officials are said to be in talks at the moment regarding the tax bill, a bill which we’re assuming Microsoft is hoping to see reduced.

Pulp Is First Exclusive Xbox 360 Movie

Pulp Is First Exclusive Xbox 360 MovieThere is nothing quite like the word “exclusive” to draw in an audience. Video game consoles have long had their own “exclusives”, with Mario starring only on Nintendo consoles, while Sonic used to be the mainstay of Sega until Sega folded as a hardware company, and the ilk. Well, how about the realm of movies? Do exclusives work? There is only one way to find out, and that would include doing the pioneering work yourself. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 decided to step onto the domain of movie theaters and premium cable subscriptions by launching Pulp, which is a British indie comedy that is exclusive to the console itself.

So far, the movie has been shortlisted at a bunch of film festivals, but that alone is not enough to generate the kind of publicity that creator Adam Hamdy wanted due to the insane costs of marketing less-than-famous films. Hence, thinking out of the box by jumping onto the Xbox 360 bandwagon. Hopefully with 77 million Xbox 360 owners around worldwide, some of them should at least view Pulp once on their respective consoles, spending nearly 2 hours of one’s life to appreciate Adam’s hard work.

McDonalds To Offer Wireless Charging In Europe

McDonalds To Offer Wireless Charging In EuropeWhether you love or hate McDonalds, you may now have a new reason to pay a visit to the fast food establishment, especially if you’re living in Europe. This is because McDonalds is the latest fast food chain in Europe to adopt the Qi-based wireless charging standard in its restaurants. The fast food company will be relying on the Powerkiss charging technology which basically attaches a ring to your mobile device (pictured above) and when placed on the table with an embedded Powerkiss pad, you will be able to charge your device while enjoying your large fries with a milkshake. Now since it is impossible to create a Powerkiss ring for every smartphone out there, the company has also built power rings for Nokia and microUSB devices.

This is not the first time we’ve heard about wireless charging making their way into public establishments as Nokia has partnered with Coffee Bean in the US to provide wireless charging as well. The upside to using Powerkiss’ technology is that it does not require the user to own a phone with wireless charging capabilities, making it a lot more accessible to the masses.

3D Print Your Favorite Terrains With The Terrainator

3D Print Your Favorite Terrains With The TerrainatorI’m not really one for mountain climbing, but if you are, there is now an interesting way of remembering your climb other than photos, mugs or t-shirts. A new website called The Terrainator basically allows you to use Google Maps and look for a piece of terrain that you think fascinates you or holds some fond memories, i.e. climbing Mt. Everest, the Grand Canyon, etc. Once you have found your spot, the website will then create a 3D model of the terrain which can then be printed out in 3D, thus giving you a 3D printing of your favorite piece of terrain anywhere on planet Earth. We suppose you could also use the website to print out places that you’ve never been so you will be able to enjoy it in 3D as opposed to mere pictures.

At the moment not many places around the world are mapped and The Terrainator currently has data for the UK, the Alps and the Western-half of US. However according to Dan Wilson, the person behind the project, new data will be added all the time. The price to request a 3D print out of your location will vary depending on how big you want it, but a 3” square model is expected to be priced around $45. If you’d like to learn more, head on to The Terrainator’s website for the details.

Samsung To Pay Less To Apple In Damages?

Samsung To Pay Less To Apple In Damages?Apple and Samsung have had tussled for what seemed to be forever in the court of law, and we have heard that Samsung was supposed to pay Apple at least $1 billion in damages, but I guess Samsung executives (and shareholders) would be more than pleased to hear that the damages to be awarded has been revised. Judge Lucy Koh who overlooked the entire trial ordered a re-evaluation of $450.5 million of the original damages that were awarded to Apple, and will require a new trial with a different jury.

This new trial will see 14 Samsung devices go under scrutiny, and the reason why these 14 were chosen was this – their per-product damages from the first trial were discovered to be rather questionable in nature, where among them include the Samsung Nexus S 4G, Infuse 4G, AT&T Galaxy S2, and the Galaxy Tab. A new trial could swing both ways – Samsung will have to either pay more, or less, depending on the outcome. Who do you think will it end up the better for it, or will things more or less remain the same?

Drug Smugglers Get Creative, Builds Cannon To Launch Marijuana Over The Border

Drug Smugglers Get Creative, Builds Cannon To Launch Marijuana Over The BorderThe smuggling of illegal drugs has been going on forever. We’ve seen and heard of some pretty creative ways, such as relying on drug mules who smuggle drugs by sticking it in places where the sun don’t shine. However we can imagine that not all drug mules are reliable especially since they are people and people do make mistakes. So what can a drug syndicate do to smuggle their drugs over the Mexican border? Shoot them over in a cannon, of course! Mexican police have recently confiscated a homemade cannon that has been shooting cylinders of marijuana over a border fence into the state of California.

Placed on the bed of the truck, the cannon was made out of a plastic pipe which doubled as its shaft, while using a metal tank as its base. Then by using the compressed air from the engine of the car, it managed to create enough pressure and power to launch the drugs over the fence. Considering that the cylinders managed to pack up to 30 pounds of marijuana in them, it is safe to say that this homemade contraption certainly packs one heck of a punch! Apparently this isn’t the first time that such an incident has occurred as back in December, similar canisters were found launched over the border into Arizona.
