Rirakkuma Earthquake Kit Is Super Cute

Rirakkuma Earthquake Kit Is Super CuteWe are about to enter the 2nd anniversary of the catastrophic “Great Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami” which ravaged northern Japan this coming March 11th. Talk about a triple whammy back then – Japan’s largest recorded earthquake in history, as well as the second largest tsunami and second largest nuclear disaster in the world after Chernobyl, all hitting the Land of the Rising Sun in a matter of 45 minutes. This is why earthquake kits do have their fair share of importance in Japan, and in order to brighten up a potentially depressing situation, the uber cute Rirakkuma Earthquake Kit has a part to play.

“Rirakkuma” is actually a combination of Japanese words for “relax” and “bear”, and remains a popular teddy bear product in Japan that is manufactured by San-X. The earthquake kit version of Rirakkuma will come well stocked with relevant emergency supplies, and if teddy bears are not your cup of tea, there will also be a Hello Kitty earthquake kit as well that targets girls. All the essentials such as a water supply, a jacket for protection against cold, a penlight, radio, whistle, and basic food are part of this earthquake kit.

Married Couple Up For Mars Trip?

Married Couple Up For Mars Trip?If you have been wondering just how you are going to make your second honeymoon a whole lot more special than the first, but have run out of great ideas simply because everyone else has done what you have thought up of, here is something which surely no one has accomplished before – going to the Red Planet, Mars. A married couple is being looked for in order to represent humanity on the first ever manned mission to Mars, which is set to be launched in 2018. Engaged couples who want to be in the running, you have 5 more years to get married before being eligible.

US millionaire tycoon Dennis Tito, who ended up being the first space tourist in 2001, decided to roll out an ambitious project that will see a couple of civilians sent on a historic 501 days return journey to Mars this coming January 2018. The entire project is not meant to land folks on Mars, but rather, to take full advantage of a rare planetary alignment which would open up a relatively easy, quick passageway around Mars.

Tito said, “When you’re out that far and the Earth is a tiny, blue pinpoint, you’re going to need someone you can hug. What better solution to the psychological problems you’re going to encounter with that isolation?” Of course, being stuck in such a small space, with no one being able to hear either of you scream, the couple could end up finding it difficult to share such a small space with no where to run when the going gets tough.

Thermochromic Jeans Change Colors Depending On Temperature

Color-changing clothing were popular briefly in the early 90s and it looks like they’ll be making a comeback fairly soon now that Naked & Famous has announced their thermochromic jeans. The jeans have a specific molecule inside of its dye that allows it to change color depending on how hot or cold you are.

As you’ll see in the promotional video published by Naked & Famous above this post, the jeans change from white to blue as you put them on. You can expand on the color-changing fun by placing your hand or anything else warm to your jeans, changing them back to white in the spot you just touched.

The thermochromic jeans will cost you $240 if you want to have the privilege of being able to change the color of your jeans wherever you go. Or, you could always go for a regular $20 pair of jeans and take them off every so often, which would probably turn heads as much as these jeans would.

Pinky And The Brain Now A Reality, World Domination Not On The Agenda Yet

Pinky And The Brain Now A Reality, World Domination Not On The Agenda YetDo you still remember the cartoon series, Pinky and The Brain? It made me wonder why someone as smart as The Brain would want to hang out with Pinky who more often than not thwarts the former’s plan to take over the world due to Pinky’s relatively low IQ count. Well, scientists have managed to connect the brains of lab rats successfully, where communication is done straight to one another through cables. The wired brain implants pave the way for sensory and motor signals to be sent from one rat to another, which would be the first ever rat-based brain-to-brain interface.

Of course, what is the point of such a system if the receiver could not interpret the information sent correctly and accurately? Professor Miguel Nicolelis and his team at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina are the ones behind this ambitious project, where there will be an “encoder” rat, while the other rat is the “decoder”. The learning process is far from easy, taking around an hour each day, with 45 days in total to get the rat to know what’s right.

Qualcomms AllJoyn Gets An Update

[WMC 2013] During a keynote at Mobile World Congress, Qualcomm CEO Dr. Paul Jacobs and several high-profile executives like Rob Chandhok were promoting AllJoyn, the company’s open platform for device-to-device proximity communications that allow devices to exchange data over any network protocol, without going through a wide area network.

To shed some context around this new AllJoyn push, you should remember that Qualcomm has been promoting the concept for the past couple of years. We’ve seen demos in previous Qualcomm events and back then, AllJoyn was mainly shown in games, but in theory it works with many types of apps and data. Qualcomm’s idea is that with AllJoyn, smart appliances could be equipped with a low-cost processor and radio that would be sufficient to communicate with a smarter device like a smartphone, tablet or home hub. Today, smart fridges basically integrate an Android tablet: this is not cost-effective and therefore prevents their proliferation.  (more…)

AirGo Concept Makes Economy Class Flights More Comfortable

AirGo Concept Makes Economy Class Flights More ComfortableFlying cattle class, or rather, economy class if you were to use the proper term, is not something that most folks enjoy, but simply because of cost considerations, there is no other choice. Thing is, are there better ways to make flying economy class more comfortable? Malaysia-based engineering student Alireza Yaghoubi figured out that this is a proverbial broken wheel that needs to be fixed, and the AirGo concept of a new economy class air passenger seat design intends to reduce the overall cost of seats, making it a whole lot easier to maintain and more comfortable, too.

According to Yaghoubi, he thought up of the AirGo design after being subjected to the cramped conditions of economy class whenever he flew. Neck pain, poor blood circulation and backaches are common symptoms of economy class passengers, and the AirGo Economy Class Cabin can be said to deliver salvation. It is a whole lot more ergonomic, less intrusive on other passengers, and of course, more economically viable compared to what we have today. Each seat will occupy an independent space which will not impose on the other passengers, while offering similar comfort levels as that of a First Class seat. An individual locker above each passenger will replace the standard shared bins, and a tray and touchscreen have also been independently mounted on arms, making it a snap to move and to be configured. Heck, if you do not need it, just fold it away.

A back support made up of a nylon mesh will conform to your body, preventing passengers from sweating, while the footrest remains integral to the AirGo seat. It is said that the AirGo is 200% more space efficient compared to First Class, and requires a mere 16% more space than a conventional Economy Class seat.

BT Tower Breaks World Record With A 320-Gigapixel Photo

BT Tower Breaks World Record With A 320 Gigapixel PhotoBT Tower has created a 360 degree panoramic photo of London that has broken the world record. The image is of 320 gigapixels and was created by photographic firm 360Cities. The image comprises of 48,000 individual frames stitched together to form the larger panoramic image. The images came from four Canon EOS 7D cameras. Lenses used to capture the images were EF 400mm f/2.8 IS II USM lenses and Extender EF 2x III teleconverters operated by Rodeon VR Head ST robotic panorama heads.

The image was captured from the top of the BT Tower in London last year. It was captured at the end of the London 2012 Olympics, to celebrate BT’s participation in the games. The total capture time was three days and was shot by Jeffrey Martin, Holger Schulze and Tom Mills. The image took over three months to process and were processed on a Fujitsu Celcius R920 computer powered by a 6 3.2GHz cores and 256GB of RAM. It is so large that if it was printed in normal resolution, it would be almost as large as the Buckingham palace.
