Facebook Sued Over Dead Man’s Patent

Facebook Sued Over Dead Mans PatentLawsuits happen all the time, especially where giant names and tons of money are involved. But this lawsuit is rather unusual: Facebook has been sued because it is accused of infringing on the patents of a Dutch programmer Joannes Jozef Everardus van Der Meer with its “Like” button.  Joannes Jozef has been dead for more than 8 years and the company that owns his intellectual property is behind the lawsuit.

So why the sudden lawsuit? BBC reports that Rembrandt Social Media holds the patents on behalf of Joannes Jozef and has contested that the Facebook “Like” button bears a remarkable resemblance to what’s described in patents of Joannes Jozef, which is “an important foundation of social media as we know it”, says Rembrandt Social Media. The lawsuit has been filed in a federal court in Virginia. Joannes Jozef’s widow and his colleagues are expected to testify in the court.

Rembrandt Social Media claims that Joannes Jozef created a social diary service he called Surfboard and was awarded the patents in 1998. A critical factor in the lawsuit is Rembrandt Social Media’s claim about Facebook knowing the patents to be of Joannes Jozef as they made reference to them in Facebook’s own patent application. Facebook has not made any comments about the lawsuit, and it is unclear at this point as to what will be the outcome of the trial. What needs to be seen is what the jury will decide.

Pay With a Tweet, Thanks to Amex And Twitter

Pay With a Tweet, Thanks to Amex And TwitterAmerican Express announced today their partnership to allow American Express card members to make purchases by tweeting. “You can turn a hashtag into more than just a conversation–you can turn it into a trigger that actually can spark commerce,” says Joel Lunenfeld, VP global brand strategy at Twitter. It works like this: AmEx card members need to first sync their eligible cards with twitter. The card member can then use special #hashtags to make their purchase and wait for verification from Amex.  Card members then need to tweet the verification in order to confirm their purchase and voila, their purchase is delivered to the registered billing address. Antarctic Legged Research Base Crawls Out Of The Snow

Antarctic Legged Research Base Crawls Out Of The SnowOn February 5th 2013, Halley VI Research Station was officially opened.  It is located on the Brunt Ice shelf which is floating on the Weddell Sea.  Construction started in 2005 at a cost of £26 million, by Faber Maunsell and Hugh Broughton Architects who provided the winning design in an architectural design competition held by British Antarctic Survey and RIBA Competitions.

The biggest challenge for engineers in the Antarctic region is perhaps that everything gets snowed under over a period of time. The Halley VI station leaps over this problem, literally. The Pods of the station are mounted on hydraulic legs based on Ski’s. This configuration allows the station to get out of snow and move to a new location and away from the ocean. And that’s not all. The biggest pod is red in color and has a bar, lounges and a pool hall for recreation. It also houses a salad garden and a climbing wall, just so the people working there (about 70 in summers) do not lose their motivation and spirit during their stay.

The Halley VI base station is a true wonder of science and clearly shows that hard work and a bit of creative imagination can go a long way. For more photos, head to the official site.

Griff’s Back to the Future 2 ‘Pit Bull’ Hoverboard On Sale For $13k

Griffs Back to the Future 2 Pit Bull Hoverboard On Sale For $13k

Ask any Back to the Future fan what product they would want from any of the films, and the first response you’re most likely to hear is a time machine made out of a DeLorean. The second response your bound to receive is a hoverboard. The Mattel Hoverboard is a fine hoverboard if you’re a beginner, but for those of us who have somehow been practicing for years, we want a real hoverboard. We want Griff’s hoverboard.

Griff’s hoverboard, which if you recall was called “Pit Bull” and even growled when Griff stepped onto it, was featured in Back to the Future Part II and was probably the most badass looking hoverboard we’ve ever seen. Lucky for us, the hoverboard has made its way to eBay.

eBay seller cinemastuff818 has Griff’s original prototype hoverboard for sale for only $12,995. The hoverboard comes with authentic minor dents and paint scratches, although it’s missing its rear foot pad. This particular hoverboard wasn’t used on camera, but cinemastuff818 assures this was the original prototype for the hoverboard that was featured on-screen.

Strand-1 Satellite Controlled By Nexus One

Strand 1 Satellite Controlled By Nexus OneWhen the word “satellite” is mentioned, what comes across your mind? Most folks would think of something large and unwieldy, full of mechanical bolts and nuts that only a rocket scientist can understand. Others would think of Soundwave from the Transformers movie, but the Strand-1 satellite here is touted to be the real deal. Seriously, it was announced a couple of years back, and is finally on course for takeoff later this month. Specially developed by Britain’s Surrey Satellite Technology Limited and the Surrey Space Centre, the Strand-1 is not large by satellite standards, and holds the distinction of being the world’s first smartphone satellite that has been housed around the chassis of a Google Nexus One handset.

The moment it hits orbit, the satellite will make use of specially developed apps in order to pick up scientific data. Apart from data collection, the researchers will make use of the Strand-1’s 5-megapixel camera in order to shoot images of the Earth and Moon. The first phase of the satellite’s operation will be controlled using a Linux operating system, but in phase two, things are set to change, with the satellite’s controls being transferred over to the handset’s Android operating system, which will be operated remotely from a control station at the University of Surrey.

Microsoft Surface Pro Launch Event In New York City Cancelled

Microsoft Surface Pro Launch Event In New York City CancelledFor those of you who have been looking forward to the planned Microsoft Surface Pro (read our Surface Pro review) launch event tomorrow in New York City by Microsoft, we regret to inform you that the software giant has canceled the event because of an incoming snowstorm which has been forecast to deliver up to a foot of snow in the Big Apple. Originally, the event was scheduled to be held at the Best Buy retail store in the Union Square section of Manhattan, and it will kick off with an invite only reception prior to the first Surface Pro tablet going on sale at that store at the stroke of midnight. Microsoft’s leader of the Surface team, Panos Panay, tweeted that he is unable to make it to the event due to the snowstorm, and when Microsoft was contacted, it seems as though the whole event had been cancelled. This was their official response, “Surface Pro launch activities in NYC have been cancelled due to weather; our best wishes for everyone impacted by the blizzard.”

Adhesive Turns To Solid Based On Light

Now here is a material that I believe, when bonded on a molecular level with a down and out scientists in a freak accident with some sort of radiation thrown into the picture, would create a decent superhero or supervillain, depending on which side of the fence you are batting on. In a nutshell, this is a new kind of reusable adhesive that is capable of liquefying and solidifying at room temperature, depending on light alone.

The new material was developed by the folks over at AIST, and it is comprised of an organic substance which allows the adhesion strength to be varied repeatedly. This is made possible through the simple act of shining light on the material, and everything will happen at the current room temperature without having to heat it up or cool it down. Once the material has solidified, it will look yellow, but should it be illuminated with UV light, it will eventually liquefies and end up in an orange shade. Definitely an interesting proposition here, being the first solid-liquid transition ever that is caused by light alone, deliberately and reversibly, all within a single substance. Now to find a practical use for it…

U.S. Postal Service Ending Saturday Mail Delivery This Summer

U.S. Postal Service Ending Saturday Mail Delivery This Summer

For years now, receiving mail in the U.S. on a Saturday has been a luxury many of us took for granted as other agencies, like UPS and FedEx, charge additional for a Saturday delivery of a package. But it looks as though that is about to change as USPS will be making a change to its Saturday service in the near future.

The U.S. Postal Service announced today it will stop delivering mail on Saturdays in order to save the agency $2 billion annually starting the week of August 5. This means regular mail deliveries will only occur Monday through Friday. (more…)

Paint Helps Lower Parking Lot Temperatures

Paint Helps Lower Parking Lot TemperaturesWho would have thought that a humble coat of paint would be able to help lower the mercury readings by up to 40 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius) on a hot day? Well, that is exactly what this light-colored, heat-reflecting asphalt and paint combination does, helping reduce the temperature of a parking lot (or wherever it is painted) whenever the sun decides to show up for work with full of zest. Of course, more or less everyone knows that painting sidewalks, walls and roofs with white would help lower temperatures somewhat, but the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Northern California decided to go ahead with commercially available heat-reflecting coatings to prove a point.

Not only did it help lower the overall temperature by a whole lot, in the long run when used in neighborhoods, it might even lower residents’ electricity use for air conditioning while doing their bit in the fight against global warming. Haley Gilbert, a research assistant at the Berkeley Lab who studies heat in cities, cited that “across an entire city, small changes in air temperature could be a huge benefit as it can slow the formation of smog.” Hmmm, perhaps Beijing might want to investigate into the use of such heat-reflecting paints.
