Survey Suggests That “Single Use” Gadgets Might Be On the Decline

screen shot 2013 01 07 at 11 05 06 Survey Suggests That Single Use Gadgets Might Be On the DeclineBack in the day, televisions were televisions, gaming consoles only played games, and phones only made phone calls. Now thanks to technology and the desire to always stay connected, our phones are not only capable of playing games, but taking photos, playing music, and the likes. Even our televisions and gaming consoles are connected, and cameras start to offer up more features beyond snapping photos and recording video. Now thanks to a survey conducted by Accenture, they have discovered that more consumers these days are moving away from “single use” products, i.e. products that are only good for one thing, instead opting for products that will be able to handle multiple things at once.

The survey also revealed some of the items that consumers are more likely to buy in 2013, and unsurprisingly smartphones take the lead with 41% followed by PCs at 36%, HDTVs at 33% and tablets at 23%. Interestingly though it seems that some “single use” products are on the rise, namely GPS devices and Blu-ray players. What do you guys make of this survey? Have you noticed that you are now shopping for gadgets that do more than just one thing, such as shopping for smart TVs instead of regular TVs and the likes?

Google TV Plans To Make A Big Return At CES With More Partners

[CES 2013] It looks like LG won’t be the only television manufacturer showing off its Google TV devices at CES next week as Google announced a number of other partners will be showing their own Google TV-powered devices.

Google announced Asus, Hisense, TCL and other manufacturers, including Sony and Vizio, will be showing off new and updated products that will be showcasing their support for the Google TV platform. The products will range from set-top boxes, integrated TVs and IPTV boxes from a total of 9 partners.

This past November, Google launched an update to its Google TV platform that added Voice Search as well as a new PrimeTime application, which will hopefully enough of an improvement over the previous Google TV platform to make the new products being showcased at CES next week worth your while. If not, then there’s always other similar platforms like Roku that can be plugged in and out of TVs without requiring you to purchase an entirely new TV set.

[CES 2013] AT&T Unite Is a 4G LTE Hotspot With 2.4 inch Touchscreen

Considering how portable Internet devices like tablets and laptops have become over the years, we know you’re always on the look out for a Starbucks in order to enjoy some free wireless Internet so you can share your favorite photos of Grumpy Cat all day long. If you absolutely need the Internet with you while you’re on the go, your own personal hotspot would be the way to go, which lucky for you, AT&T will be introducing its AT&T Unite at CES next week.

The AT&T Unite will give your portable Internet devices the power of AT&T’s 4G LTE network in a small package as the Unite will have a 2.4-inch touchscreen display and allow you to connect up to 10 devices to it at a time. AT&T Unite owners will also be able to give access to their personal hotspot to one-time users, although seeing how valuable Internet is these days, we’re not sure why you’d want to.

No pricing or availability was mentioned for the AT&T Unite, but customers who wish to add any mobile hotspot device to their Mobile Share plan can do so for $20 a month, which we’re sure the Unite will fall into when it’s released some time this year.

Cable Providers Looking To Raise Rates For Heavy Internet Users

We think it’s safe to assume our readers are fans of the Internet and all of its glorious uses like reading up on the latest news in tech, streaming music and movies and chatting it up with your friends through Skype. But as we’re enjoying all of these wonders of the Internet, our bandwidth usage skyrockets, which is something cable providers may start charging additional costs for those heavy hitters.

Time Warner Cable and other cable providers are testing new business models that focus on usage-based pricing. The usage-based pricing plans would charge customers based on the amount of bandwidth they use a month, which if you have a cell phone plan you may know all too well.

The reason for the tests are due to the increase in the amount of Internet data over the years, which cable providers apparently claim has caused a more congested Internet. Seeing how the U.S.’ Internet speeds landed us in 12th place in speed average behind South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong, we think cable companies need to focus less on squeezing money out of its customers and more on giving us Internet speeds we deserve.

U.S. Government Unhappy With Eric Schmidt’s Visit To North Korea

eric schmidt U.S. Government Unhappy With Eric Schmidts Visit To North KoreaEric Schmidt is going to North Korea. While the thought of Google’s very own Executive Chairman visiting a country reputed to have the most restrictive Internet policies in the world seems interesting, the U.S. State Department is not happy. In a statement on Thursday, the department said that the time was not right for Schmidt and former diplomat Bill Richardson to visit North Korea. State Department spokesman Victoria Nuland says that North Korea’s launch of a long-range rocket in December prompted the U.S. and other allies to increase the United Nations’s sanction on North Korea.
