Amazon Reveals Best-Selling Books Of 2012

We love to write and read. So, if you’re looking for a bunch of good books to read this holiday season, Amazon has prepared a nifty list of best-selling books for you to read. Today, Amazon is announcing the top 10 best-selling books of 2012 overall (print and Kindle combined), as well as the top 10 Kids & Teens books. This year is different. If Walter Isaacson’s Steve Jobs was the best-selling book last year, this year seems to be “the year of the billionaire bad boy in romance.”

Sara Nelson, the Editorial Director of Books and Kindle at Amazon says, “While E. L. James published the first two books in her Fifty Shades trilogy in 2011, so they aren’t eligible for our 2012 list, the series really took off this year and propelled the third installment and the omnibus edition onto our top 10 list. It’s also interesting to note that four of the five contemporary romance titles in the top 10 list, including the Fifty Shades trilogy, were originally independently published and went on to become huge best sellers.” Check out the list after the break. CALM Act Gets Implemented, Turns Down Volume On Loud Commercials

Finally, after four long years of waiting, the CALM Act, which stands for Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation, took effect yesterday, Thursday, December 13th. The CALM Act, introduced by Rep. Anna G. Eshoo in 2008, requires broadcast, cable, satellite and other video providers to keep the volume of commercials at a level consistent with regular TV programming. “This has been a top consumer complaint for decades. I never dreamed that this would strike the chord that it did with the American public,” Eshoo said at a news conference yesterday.

Apparently loud commercials have been a top consumer complaint for almost 10 years. According to a 2009 Harris poll, almost 90 percent of TV viewers are bothered by high commercial volumes, prompting 41 percent of viewers to turn down the volume, 22 percent to mute the TV, and 17 percent to change the channel altogether. The FCC passed its final rules implementing the law in December 2011, but the agency gave the industry a one-year grace period to adopt it. So, yes, we can now report violations to the FCC’s website.

Prank Pack Pet Sweep

Everyone and their dog knows that Christmas is coming, and this would mean a frenzied shopping season needs to kick off (which can be a good excuse to the missus that you are just doing your patriotic duty in stimulating the local economy, of course). Well, giving gifts have just one level of excitement – when the box that the gift comes in is carefully wrapped in present paper. Well, how about increasing the level of suspense by another one, while eliciting a surprised look from the recipient’s face? This is where the Prank Pack Pet Sweep comes in handy.

Basically, the Prank Pack Pet Sweep has been described as a package that comes with four tiny mops that can be attached to your dog’s paws, allowing it to clean up your home as it moves around indoors. Good luck getting your dog to wear all four of these without nary a form of protest! All you need to do is pack the actual gift within, and watch the expressions of dismay on the recipient’s face when he/she rips open the wrapping paper only to see this – and he/she doesn’t even have a dog in the first place.

Samsung Chip Factory Linked To Cancer

Just as we were about to rest the case against Samsung and its labor controversies, we are hearing another complaint, this time, from the Korea Workers’ Compensation and Welfare Service. According to the South Korean government agency today, a woman who worked at a Samsung chip factory for five years died of breast cancer earlier this year. The agency has recognized a link between cancer and Samsung’s chip plants, saying that there was a “considerable causal relationship” between the woman’s cancer and her five years of work at a semiconductor plant near Seoul.

The woman, who was not named due to her family’s request, reportedly worked for 8 to 12 hours a day and was often assigned to work on night shifts. “There was an exposure to organic solvents and radiation. The earlier the exposure is, the more likely the cancer is caused,” the agency added. Meanwhile, Samsung spokesman James Chung says that the company will not appeal the government’s decision. Korea Workers’ Compensation and Welfare Service is also asking Samsung to pay the woman’s bereaved family. Although the amount was not disclosed, an agency spokesman alluded that it usually amounts to nearly four years of a worker’s salary.

Best Buy Fined $27m For Stealing Buy Back Concept From Startup

Have you used Best Buy’s “Buy Back” program to trade in your recently purchased gadgets for a percentage of its cost back to Best Buy and thought, “Hey! This doesn’t seem like an original idea to me!” Well, you’re right as Best Buy has been hit with a $22 million fine in damages for stealing trade secrets from San Francisco startup, TechForward.

A jury ruled in favor for TechForward, who originally came up with the program and worked with Best Buy to implement the service to its customers starting in 2009. After months of working with TechForward, Best Buy decided to cancel their deal with the company to pursue its own version of their buyback program. Unfortunately for Best Buy, TechForward didn’t take the cancelation sitting down, filed their lawsuit and won.

TechForward co-founders Jade Van Doren and Marc Lebovitz had the following to share in regards to today’s news:

“We are extremely pleased that the jury recognized Best Buy’s misconduct, and we hope this verdict puts large companies on notice that there are real consequences to illegally exploiting start-up businesses like ours”

As of now, Best Buy’s “Buy Back Program” no longer seems to be accepting new customers, but will honor existing Buy Back customers for up to 24 months of when their product was purchased. When you consider it cost Best Buy $27 million in fines, they should at least be able to continue using what they stole from TechForward.

Grow Your Next Piña Colada With The AusFestival Coconut-Flavored Pineapples

It’s Friday which means we’re all just a few hours away to the weekend, which also means we’re a few hours away from getting our drink on. I’m not much of a drinker, but I certainly can appreciate the deliciousness that is the piña colada. And apparently scientists in Australia can also appreciate the delicious drink as they have grown coconut-flavored pineapples.

Australian researchers in a facility located in Queensland have actually been working on coconut-flavored pineapples for several years, with the product being in its final stages. The AusFestival pineapple was initially discovered by accident, and just like your little sister, turned out to be an accident people grew to love.

Seeing how much research has gone into attempting to cure hundreds of thousands of diseases that will potentially kill us all, we’re happy to see some research go into something a lot more fun. Unfortunately for you piña colada lovers out there, the AusFestival pineapple won’t be planted commercially for a few years. Until then, make a trip down to your local liquor store, grab some piña colada mix and toast the results of this awesome discovery.

Shipping Containers Are Now Used To Alleviate Homelessness

Experts are now considering the option to use shipping containers as home shelters. A shipping container is built to withstand the perils of traveling at sea. Because of their sturdy design, they also make good homes, at least that is what the Bloomberg administration is planning. Authorities in New York city are now using shipping containers for its disaster housing program. If another hurricane that is similar to Sandy will threaten the city sometime in the future, residents in New York will no longer use tents or high school gymnasiums. Instead, shipping containers will be used as emergency quarters.

The city’s disaster housing program will utilize stackable shipping containers that will form into apartments, complete with the basic home amenities. Meanwhile, in U.K., particularly in Brighton and Hove, developer QED is converting shipping containers into temporary houses for homeless men and women in the area who are unfortunately facing housing crisis. Around 36 shipping containers have been transformed into self-contained studio flats, and they include bathrooms and kitchens. Andy Winter, the Chief Executive of Brighton Housing Trust, says that imaginative solutions are needed to solve the desperate housing situation in the city. “I have to admit that when it was first suggested to me that shipping containers be used for housing, I was a bit skeptical,” he adds.

Taliban Reportedly Using Facebook To Hire People

The Pakistani Taliban is now using Facebook to hire people. According to AFP, the Islamic and militant group has set up a new Facebook page bearing the name Umar Media TTP. The account appears to have been created in September this year, and it currently has over 274 likes with around 28 people talking about the page as of this writing. Umar Media TTP has a handful of posts written in English.

The first post reads, “Umar Media is proud to announce online jobs oppertunities. Job discription is video editing, translations, sharing, uploading, downloading and collection of required data.” Another post, dated November 23rd, reads, “Dear brothers and sisters. ‘Pen is mightier than the sword.’ Now you have a chance to use this mighty weapon. ‘AHYAH-E-KHILAFAT’ is an official quarterly magazine of ‘TEHREEEK-E-TALIBAN PAKISTAN.’ Would you like to be a writer for ‘AHYAH-E-KHILAFAT?’ You can write to us on topic of your choice, or on jihadi, current affairs, history, islamic movements, plight of ummah, and etc.”

We’re not sure if the Facebook page is genuine, but AFP says that a Taliban spokesperson has confirmed via telephone that the page is being used by the group to “to fulfill its requirements” prior to launching a website of its own. The Search for International Terrorist Entities (SITE) Intelligence Group also confirms that the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) indeed uses Facebook as a “a recruitment center.”
