Netflix And Comcast Sign Agreement To End Bandwidth Throttling

Netflix And Comcast Sign Agreement To End Bandwidth ThrottlingFor those unfamiliar with net neutrality, it’s basically where service providers aren’t allowed to discriminate between bandwidths, meaning that if there is a service that an ISP or telco would like to promote, they cannot do so at the expense of regular bandwidth which could affect the speed and experience of their paying customers. Unfortunately a recent federal court ruling has basically struck down the net neutrality rules placed by the FCC, which meant that as far as Netflix customers are concerned, there have been many complains about a decline in streams. The good news is that could soon come to an end, thanks to Netflix entering into an agreement with Comcast, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

According to the report, Netflix and Comcast have entered into an agreement where Comcast will no longer throttle the bandwidth of Netflix, and will also see Netflix pay Comcast an undisclosed sum of money to have a direct link to the ISP. Apparently Netflix had requested that their servers be placed within Comcast’s data centers itself to take advantage of video caching, while previously Netflix had relied on third parties, such as Cogent, to deliver their data to Comcast in order to stream their videos. It should be noted that this does not mean that customers will have to start paying more for their services. Basically what is happening is that instead of paying Cogent, they are now directly paying Comcast instead.

Amazon is keeping a Secret with their 30-Day Price Guarantee

This article was written on January 04, 2007 by CyberNet.

Good news! Amazon.com has a 30-day price guarantee.  This means that if you buy something, and then later within 30 days, the price drops, you can get a refund for the difference.  This isn’t something that they advertise ( I don’t blame them), but it is something that they offer, and willingly do without hassle. Who knew? Certainly it would be nice if they told their customers about this great offer, but they don’t.  All you have to do when you realize the price has dropped is call 1-800-201-7575 and press extension 7 to get customer service right away.

The next bit of good news; there’s actually a free service available to track the items you’ve purchased to see if the price goes down.  If it does, they’ll email you! This makes it an extra easy process for you, especially if you buy multiple things.  What a hassle it would be to go to Amazon every day, checking for a price change. The website is called RefundPlease, and their sole purpose is to track online purchases from Amazon for price changes.

So, here’s how it works: After you’ve gone to Amazon.com and you’ve made your purchase, visit Refund Please and fill out their simple form.  All you need is the ISBN# if it’s a book, or the ASIN# for everything else.  Enter in the price you paid, along with the date , and your email, and it will track your item for you. How cool is that? Ironically, both of these stories made the front page of Digg today.

If you bought anything from Amazon in the last 30 days, you’ll definitely want to check out www.refundplease.com

DHL Trolls Its Rivals Into Advertising For Them [Humor]

When you order your gadgets and have them shipped to you, chances are you might end up using a courier service like DHL, TNT, UPS, and the likes. Well it seems that DHL might have a pretty cheek streak about them, a side to the company that maybe many did not know about as they pretty much pranked competing delivery companies into advertising for them. How did they do it, you ask? After all we’re pretty sure none of these companies in their right mind would willing and openly advertise for a rival, right?

Well what DHL did was they got some large boxes and taped them with thermo active foil. The boxes with the thermo active foils were then cooled down below the freezing temperature, -4C according to the video, which basically turned the entire box black, making it very nondescript. Competing delivery services were called to pick up the shipment and were asked to deliver it to addresses which DHL claimed were hard to find, but that wasn’t the issue. As the foils returned to normal temperatures, they changed back to a bright yellow, the colors of DHL, with a tagline that read, “DHL Is Faster”. For the most part the deliverymen didn’t appear too fussed, although they did look highly inconvenienced, except in one case where the deliveryman decided to tape over the words. Talking about trojan mails!

Nokia Could Buy Juniper Networks [Report]

Nokia Could Buy Juniper Networks [Report]

Nokia does a lot more than just make phones, so its not like this iconic brand will completely disappear once its deal with Microsoft is formally closed. Even though it has unloaded its Devices and Services division to Microsoft for $7.1 billion, some businesses will remain under the Finnish company’s belt, including Nokia Solutions and Networks. It will become the company’s primary operation once the deal is closed within the next few weeks, and after spending years on cutting costs, NSN is now reportedly looking to expand. To do that, it may buy U.S. based Juniper Networks to expand its network gear business, this according a German magazine.

    Fujitsu Glove-Style Wearable Device

Fujitsu Glove Style Wearable DeviceNow here is a novel idea – how about infusing your glove with enough technology to make it a highly desirable wearable device? This is exactly what the folks over at Fujitsu have done, and their latest glove-style wearable device is one which flirts with the idea of gesture control. This is an NFC-enabled glove which has been described by Fujitsu to be able to function “reliably in multiple tasks and postures without being awkward.” Hmmm, I suppose it will take some getting used to in checking out this particular glove-style wearable device when someone is wearing it, since it is not exactly haute couture to begin with.

Google Wanted To Buy WhatsApp For $10 Billion [Report]

Google Wanted To Buy WhatsApp For $10 Billion [Report]

By now we have all heard that Facebook has agreed in principle to buy WhatsApp, the most popular cross platform messaging service out there, for an eye watering sum of $19 billion in cash and stock. If the deal falls through for some reason, Facebook has promised a cash breakup fee of $1 billion. Since the announcement was made, many figures were thrown around. An investor is set to rake in billions, while existing WhatsApp employees will get millions on part of the $3 billion restricted Facebook stock they get. There’s another number that’s equally interesting. Apparently Google was courting WhatsApp as well, and it even offered $10 billion to buy it.

Email Storage: How much is too much?

This article was written on April 02, 2007 by CyberNet.

Yahoo recently announced their “to infinity and beyond” unlimited email storage, and from that has come several things to think about. First, can any service truly offer “unlimited” storage to everybody? There has to be some cut off point, doesn’t there? Secondly, how much is too much? Do users really need that much storage?

Even extreme power email users probably don’t need that much storage. Especially when most people have at least two accounts – one for work, one for home, one for school, family, etc. With multiple accounts, you’re sure to have plenty of room.

To wrap up this topic, here are the results of our last poll where we asked , “You’ve got lots of email storage, but how much do you actually use?”

    — Poll Results—

There were 343 votes total, and out of those, 42% of voters said they used between 51 and 500 MB of their storage space. Next was 0–10 MB with 19% of the votes. Very few people used anything more than 500 MB of storage.

Certainly, a lot of people are happy that Yahoo has made the move to “unlimited” storage and because of that, other services will probably follow. Regardless of how much storage space everyone uses, not one person can complain about the price for email storage these days. It’s free!

Keep Track Of Unread Comments At CyberNet

This article was written on August 31, 2006 by CyberNet.

We have another addition for the registered users of our site. It is difficult to keep track of comments especially when they are from posts that were weeks ago. That’s why for the last few hours (hence the light posting) I have set it up so that you can keep track of comments you have not read yet.

Simply go to your management screen and it will also show you comments that you need to read next to the current/upcoming All-Star commenters list. It will only show you comments from the last 7 days and since there have been quite a few, you may want to start out by using the “Mark all comments as read” link. Also, as the screenshot shows you can hold your mouse over one of the links and it will show you when that last comment was posted as well as who posted it.

We hope this makes it a little easier to keep track of the comments. Initially we started off with the intention of letting people sign-up for email alerts on individual posts but we were afraid that you would get frustrated with additional clutter in your Inbox. This was the best solution that we came up with.

In case you were wondering it uses a cookie to keep track of when you visit a post. Then when you login to view your unread posts it will compare that cookie to the list of comments in our database. It’s pretty simple and an effective solution, but if you don’t have cookies enabled this will obviously not work.

Hope everyone enjoys it and make sure to take a look at all of the cool smilies on the comment form! Maybe they’ll help express ourselves better. 😀

On a side note if you have tried to send us a tip in the last few weeks we may not have received it. We have gotten all direct emails but it seems as though the internal system was not sending anything out. It has now been corrected. 😳

Google I/O 2014 Will Be Taking Place On 25-26 June

Google I/O 2014 Will Be Taking Place On 25 26 JuneGoogle I/O is more or less Google’s answer to Microsoft’s Build and Apple’s WWDC, and today according to a post by Sundar Pichai, it has been revealed that Google I/O 2014 will be taking place on the 25th and 26th of June 2014. As expected the event will be held at the usual location, Moscone West, and the good news is that for those who aren’t able to attend, Google will be live streaming the event so you can catch it live in the comfort of your own home in front of your computer. Interestingly enough, it seems that instead of a first-come-first-serve system when it comes to getting a ticket to go, Google will use a lottery system.

Basically developers or attendees interested in going to Google I/O this year will have to submit a request. Google will then make random selections and those who have been successfully chosen will be able to attend the event. We guess in a way this is good as those who might be slow on the take or who might otherwise be busy with other things will still have a chance of attending the event as well. We’re not sure what Google will be sharing with us at I/O later this year, but presumably we can look forward to Android-related announcements, as well as changes/improvements Google will be making to their products/services, as well as other developer-related activities.

Microsoft Stores Offering Free 100GB To OneDrive Users

Microsoft Stores Offering Free 100GB To OneDrive UsersEarlier we had reported how Microsoft had officially launched OneDrive, which was basically the rebranding of SkyDrive, Microsoft’s cloud storage services. According to our earlier report, it was suggested that OneDrive users would be able to earn themselves additional free storage by referring their friends/family members to the service, where every referral would nab them an additional 500MB, with a total of 5GB up for grabs. Well if you think that 5GB isn’t enough, how does 100GB sound to you? Earlier Microsoft had teased users, prompting them to login at 11:11AM PT, and for those who did, they were given 100GB in free storage. Obviously the deal is now over, but the good news is that it is still applicable if you were to walk into a Microsoft Store.

This is according to a tweet by @OneDrive where OneDrive users would be able to win themselves an additional 100GB in storage if they were to walk into a Microsoft Store and speak to a rep about it. Basically you’d need to tell the rep that you want to activate a free OneDrive account, or show them proof that you have an existing OneDrive account, and you’d be good to go! Unfortunately this deal is limited to the first 10,000 across all of Microsoft’s physical stores in the US, Puerto Rico, and Canada. The next 20,000 customers will be getting a consolation prize of 20GB, which we guess is still pretty good. This promotion will be valid starting from today until the 24th of February at 2:59AM ET.
