Lenovo Plans Multiple Acquisitions And A Wider Range of Smartphones

Lenovo is one of the most notable vendors in the PC market but the company has also been in the smartphone business for a while and is now considering acquiring a number of other firms to further enhance its product portfolio. The acquisitions will probably be aimed at bolstering its mobile division.

Talking about the acquisitions, the company’s CEO Yang Yuanwing said, “We would fully leverage this [acquisition] tool if the target is consistent with our strategy. Any area which is consistent with our strategy where we are weak, we would like to consider acquisitions.” (more…)

Google Maps for Android adds biking navigation

At last, Google Maps caters to those who get around on two wheels – in particular, on a bicycle. After all, searching for the best biking route in town can prove to be quite a challenge, which is where the latest version of Google Maps for Android comes in handy. It will deliver mobile biking directions as well as navigation to 10 countries where desktop biking directions was launched last month, namely Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.

Some of the other features thrown into the mix include turn-by-turn capability as well as voice-guided biking navigation to Google Maps Navigation (beta) in every country that has biking directions. All you need to do is mount your device on your bicycle’s handlebars and then you are able to get a clear, unobstructed view of the turn-by-turn directions and navigation. Alternatively, you can always rely on the speaker-mode to hear voice-guided directions. (more…)

LEGO Go-Kart for humans and not minifigs

The wonderful world of LEGO, where these Danish-made bricks are able to fit perfectly with one another without missing a beat. Isn’t it a wonder that this can happen, and have you ever given thought to the amount of precision that has gone into the manufacturing process? Well, here we are with yet another LEGO creation that ended up as a Go-Kart, except that you will not find Mario sitting inside one of these puppies, but rather, it will be a human buttock that fits perfectly into the driver’s seat.

The brainchild of Eric Steenstra, this LEGO go-kart is not only lovely to look at, it is also able to run just like a regular go-kart, although I am not quite sure of the safety measures taken should this actually run into a brick wall or something. Right now, it is still a rough work in progress, as there is no steering capability at all, but I am quite sure that Eric is going to get whatever shortcomings fixed in his very own time.

Apple injunction on Samsung set for December 6th showdown

If you are interested to find out the results of Apple’s injunction against Samsung’s products, then you might want to mark down December 6th on your calendar, as that is the date that a U.S. judge set to hear Apple request for a permanent injunction against Samsung Electronics’ smartphones (all 8 of them for starters), and between now and then, it might just delay the impact of Apple’s recent legal victory that saw Samsung have to fork out $1 billion in damages over to the fruity company.

Originally, a hearing concerning the preliminary injunctions had been scheduled for September 20th, although it remains to be determined whether the 8 device ban from Samsung will be addressed then, or will it be moved to the end of the year. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh mentioned that the scope of Apple’s preliminary injunction request was large enough that it was deemed “appropriate” that various post-trial motions be consolidated.

IBM’s Watson is a genius compared to siri

When Apple launched iPhone 4S with the voice-based personal assistant Siri, the world was mesmerized by the idea of Siri and this has popularized the concept of digital voice-activated assistant – in the real world, Siri wasn’t so hot (check our iPhone 4S review), but this is another story… Since then, many other vendors, such as Samsung, have tried to leverage their own voice-based assistants, but Siri is still considered the top-of-the-list by many.

However, that may change soon now. Compared to Siri, IBM’s Watson artificial intelligence system is a rather mega-project which has been designed to crunch massive amounts of data and act on them. Watson made a name for itself by winning the Jeopardy! TV show. Apparently, it can now answer voice questions too. (more…)

Emotiv headsets hack into your brain

I know that we have been living in the atomic age for quite some time already, but we have yet to see mutants running around like crazy as depicted in the X-Men movies. This means you are safe from a telepath “hacking” into your brain, but a normal human might be able to do so with the right tools and under the right circumstances, of course. It seems that security researchers have managed to rely on affordable Emotiv headsets (which we have seen in the past) to capture the subconscious responses of a person to external stimuli, further using them to uncover data straight from the horse’s mouth – in this case, their subjects’ brains. Needless to say, on paper, this is a theoretical risk to privacy and security which might eventually end up as rather significant should such technology advances further in its own field. (more…)

Solar Power Plants Are Fast Replacing Peaker Plants In Australia

When producing power, one can not ignore the common pattern of power demand. Power demand usually subsides during the night and at midday, it peaks, thus requiring maximum power supply required at that time.

For long, peaker plants have provided this additional power required during peak hours. Typically, peaker plants make use of dirty energy sources and are have been frequently criticized in the past. But the good news from Australia are that the solar-power plants are all set to replace these peaker plants. (more…)
