3D map of the universe is the largest to date

What you see above is part of the largest 3D map of the universe ever created to date in the history of humanity, and you have a bunch of astronomers to thank for this bit of “artwork”, so to speak. The 3D map actually holds the slew of massive galaxies and even distant black holes in the known universe, and researchers do have their fingers crossed that this particular map will be able to assist in the investigation of “dark matter” and “dark energy” which theoretically, comprise of 96% of the known universe.

Developed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III), this 6-year project will eventually be able to include the measurement of the positions of 1.5 million massive galaxies that are spread across a delectable seven billion years of cosmic time, in addition to 160,000 quasars, whereby quasars are huge black holes that feed on stars and gas actively, making them buddies with Galactus, so to speak. These are truly mind blogging numbers and figures to digest.

World’s cutest dog owner actually works on Facebook

If you happen to love dogs, then probably you know who Boo is. Just a quick “world’s cutest dog” search on Google will tell you who the dog is. And while I love my 2-year old Rottweiler more, I got to admit that Boo is one hell of a cute dog. Won’t you agree? Well, the 6-year-old Pomeranian with a weird coiffure recently hit the top stories this morning. That’s because the public now knows who Boo’s “mom” is.

Interestingly, the owner of the dog with more than five million Facebook fans is Irene Ahn, and she happens to work at Facebook, sort of leading the social network’s finance department. AllThingsD, who first broke the story, said that Ahn used to work for Yahoo and PayPal prior to joining Mark Zuckerberg’s company in December 2008. Apparently Boo’s owner has kept her identity secret to most of the world. When Boo guested on Good Morning America last year, Irene Ahn reportedly stayed off-camera. Even when Boo’s book was published last year, Ahn decided to write it under the pseudonym J.H. Lee. Interesting isn’t it?

Microsoft and NYPD unveils new high-tech law enforcement surveillance system

Microsoft, in partnership with the New York City Police Department, is announcing a new state-of-the-art law enforcement technology called Domain Awareness System. The said system is designed to bring the latest crime prevention and counter terrorism technology capabilities to New York City and to other law enforcement, and intelligence agencies around the world sometime in the future. Essentially, the Domain Awareness System aggregates and analyzes existing public safety data streams in real-time by using cameras, license plate readers, environmental sensors and law enforcement databases. This will give NYPD investigators and analysts a comprehensive view of potential threats and criminal activity.

The system is also outfitted with an intelligent and intuitive graphical interface and mapping capabilities. The Domain Awareness System, for example, will be used by the NYPD to gather information about a suspect’s record, 911 calls associated with the suspect, and previous related crimes. The NYPD can even map criminal history to geospatially and chronologically reveal crime patterns of suspects. The Domain Awareness System will be using the city’s roughly 3,000 closed-circuit TV cameras to monitor criminal activity and potential threats. Microsoft has agreed to pay the city 30 percent of its gross revenues on the sale of the system to other customers worldwide.

Evernote for iOS updated, lets you tap anywhere to edit

Ah, progress in the world of software more often than not comes in the form of an update or a newer version number. The same can be said for Evernote for iOS, as this particular app has served many well in the past, but that does not mean there is no longer any more room for further improvement, don’t you think so? That’s what we thought, too, where Evernote for iOS has just received its latest update that weighs in at 13.4MB, allowing you to tap just about anywhere on the document itself to perform an edit right there and then, without having to go through more than one step to edit a particular document.

Basically, the new and updated Evernote for iOS will no longer be as inefficient as the old, where tapping tapping anywhere in an entry will see the editing tool appear right at the spot where you tapped earlier. It does not sound like much, but it sure as heck would make this particular app far more fun and efficient to use. Have you given the latest version of Evernote for iOS a go yet, and how did you fare with it?

Samsung supplier accused of child labor abuse, Korean tech giant investigates Chinese factory

Apple may not be the only tech company being criticized for labor abuse. It turns out that its main rival, Samsung, is also being probed for labor abuses on its factories in China. According to an undercover report from activist group China Labor Watch, Samsung supplier HEG Electronics in mainland China is reportedly hiring children under the age of 16 on its factory. At least seven children had been identified so far by the group, although it said that the precise number of child laborers throughout the factory is still unknown.

NASA’s Curiosity rover sends back first color photo

After the successful landing of NASA’s heaviest piece of machinery on the red planet to date, the Curiosity Rover has sent back its first few images of the dusty planet, and if you can just squint your eyes a little bit, you might be able to check out the natives of Barsoom, and some say, a speck that could very well be John Carter leaping through the air. What Curiosity revealed was a rust-tinged, pebbly landscape, with the famous Mars crater rim being somewhere in the distance. The image was taken thanks to a camera which was located at the end of its robotic arm.

Approximately 300 or so low-quality thumbnails were sent back to Earth on Monday, and NASA has taken the trouble to process them into a short video. It would be great if there were High Definition photos shot from so far away, but I guess we will have to make do with what we have at the moment. Now all we need to do is land a man on Mars, and watch the potential of a whole new world open up to mankind.

This Lego Android mascot wants to be made official

If you’re a fan of Lego and Google’s Android mobile platform, then you and GLHTurbo both have something in common. Now it seems that in a demonstration of his love for both Lego and Android, he has painstakingly pieced together a Lego model of the Android mascot (pictured above). Using a total of 205 bricks, this Lego Android model not only looks pretty good, but has articulation as well. Its head can be turned, so can its arms and its antennae. GLHTurbo is also planning a future developer version that comes with a flying rocket/jet pack which we assume will be made out of Lego as well.

Now the interesting thing is that GLHTurbo plans to submit his design to Lego to make it an official Lego figurine, which we’re sure will sit well with Android fans out there who love collecting all things Android related. However in order to make Lego take notice of his efforts, he has launched a CUUSOO project which is essentially Kickstarter for Lego. He needs to hit 10,000 supporters before it can even be considered, so if you’d like to be able to purchase this Lego figurine from a hobby store or a toy shop one day, pop on over to CUUSOO to lend your support!
