AT&T’s Mobile Share Plans will be available beginning August 23

AT&T launched its Mobile Share plans last month in hopes of providing more flexibility to its current existing plans. As mentioned, the Mobile Share plan allows AT&T customers to combine as many as 10 devices under one monthly data allotment. Loch Ness monster finally shot on camera?

Nessie, the nickname for the Loch Ness monster, has been the subject of extreme interest for many people, and monster hunters had been looking for it for the longest time ever without any signs of success. Nessie hunter George Edwards is part of this group who had spent plenty of his time – 26 years, to be exact, looking for the Loch Ness Monster. He claims that what you see above is the “best picture ever” shot of this elusive and shy beast, after years of spending up to 60 hours each week in order to complete his quest.

According to George Edwards, “I was just about to return to Temple Pier (in Drumnadrochit) and I went to the back of the boat which was facing the pier and that’s when I saw it. It was slowly moving up the loch towards Urquhart Castle and it was a dark grey colour. It was quite a fair way from the boat, probably about half a mile away but it’s difficult to tell in water.” Observing the object for up to 10 minutes, Mr. Edwards said that it then went underneath the surface and never came up again. He continued, “I’m convinced I was seeing Nessie as I believe in these creatures.

Do you think that what you see above is Nessie?

Google axes Google Apps for Teams, Google Video for business, and Google Listen

Every now and then Google decides to do a little spring cleaning with its outdated or irrelevant products and gets rid of them. Last month, Google switched Google Video over to Youtube and also got rid of iGoogle.  Now, Google has given the axe to its Google Apps for Teams product. If you’re unfamiliar with Google Apps for Teams, it allows schools and small teams access to Google’s enterprise server. Starting September 4th, Apps for Teams will become standard personal accounts.

AT&T to discontinue its 2G network by 2017

AT&T has announced its plan to end its old 2G network by 2017. In a SEC filing today, the telecommunications giant said that it will be shutting down its second-generation network in order to focus more on upgrading its systems. Although the telecom giant mentioned that about 12 percent of its customers under contract are still using 2G handsets, the company added that it will be “proactively” asking those customers to upgrade their devices along the way. Additionally, AT&T said that it will no longer sell 2G handsets to its contract or prepaid customers and that the transition away from GSM and EDGE networks will be on a market-by-market basis. AT&T expects its 2G network to be fully discontinued beginning January 1, 2017.

“We expect to fully discontinue service on our 2G networks by approximately January 1, 2017. Throughout this multi-year upgrade process, we will work proactively with our customers to manage the process of moving to 3G and 4G devices, which will help minimize customer churn. As of June 30, 2012, approximately 12 percent of our postpaid customers were using 2G handsets. We do not expect this transition to have a material impact on our operating results, but will continue to evaluate the financial impact of transitioning customers from 2G devices to 3G or 4G devices,” AT&T said.

RIM once considered the idea of switching to Android

The times have been tough for Research In Motion. Yet its CEO, Thorsten Heins, remains firm in leading the company. In an interview with The Telegraph yesterday, Heins talked about how BlackBerry will survive and how other manufacturers could use its new operating system. When asked about BB10, the CEO responded that the company’s teams are working relentlessly day and night, and pointed out that it is a once in a decade change that will see them through the next ten years. Heins also said that the company once considered the idea of migrating to Android.

“We took the conscious decision not to go Android. If you look at other suppliers’ ability to differentiate, there’s very little wiggle room. We looked at it seriously – but if you understand what the promise of BlackBerry is to its user base it’s all about getting stuff done,” he said. “Games, media, we have to be good at it but we have to support those guys who are ahead of the game. Very little time to consume and enjoy content – if you stay true to that purpose you have to build on that basis. And if we want to serve that segment we can’t do it on a me-too approach.” (more…)

Taco Bell employee pees on order and posts photo online

If there are two fast food joints that people might be avoiding in the near future, it would definitely be Burger King and Taco Bell. Cameron Jankowski, a worker over at Taco Bell, was alleged to have posted a photo of himself peeing on a Taco Bell order, tweeting his “exploits” afterwards. Thanks to hacktivist collective group Anonymous, they tweeted a link to a YouTube video which purportedly showed off Janowski’s personal details, who was subsequently identified to be working at a Taco Bell restaurant in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It seems that (naturally) Janowski’s account has since been deleted, but the Internet has a memory now, with an archived photo Jankowski’s tweeted image being kept “alive”.

According to Jankowski, this order which he urinated on was not served to a customer afterwards, as it was deemed to be messed up and was designated for the bun anyway. Despite thta, several Twitter users claimed that such an action actually amounted to felony. What do you think? Janowski is not too concerned about his tweet being directed to Taco Bell as he says he has a new job in line already. (more…)

LinkedIn reportedly spent nearly $1 million to fix security breach

Following the hapless security infraction that LinkedIn experienced two months ago, the company is now saying that it has spent a huge amount of money to fix the problem. Fresh from its earnings call today, LinkedIn CFO Steve Sordello said that the company has spent between $500,000 and $1 million on forensic work after 6.5 million LinkedIn hashed passwords were leaked and posted on a hacking site in Russia early in June.

Sordello said that the company will continue to invest more on security and added that ongoing efforts to protect members should add $2 million to $3 million in costs in the current quarter. LinkedIn also announced its second quarter financial results that ended last June 30. In spite of the mishap, the company announced that the revenue for the second quarter was $228.2 million, an increase of 89 percent compared to $121.0 million in the second quarter of 2011. However, the company’s net income for the second quarter this year was only $2.8 million, compared to its net income of $4.5 million for the second quarter in 2011.

London Olympics committee deploys Wi-Fi Police to hunt unauthorized Wi-Fi hotspots

We already know that wireless hotspots have been banned at the London Olympics. But it seems that the practical aspect of the rule has been tested as sports fans are secretly turning on their mobile hotspots to access the Internet. To ensure that the “no portable wireless hotspot” rule gets implemented, the Olympic committee has deployed the Wi-Fi police, similar to the one pictured above.

Yes, that photo was taken by Sadao Turner, the director of New Media for Ryan Seacrest’s productions. Turner tweeted with the photo saying, “Something you won’t see on TV, this is the Olympics Wi-Fi Police. They seek unauthorized wifi signals & shut them down.” So if you’re in London right now for the Olympics and are planning to use that portable hotspot functionality on your device, you might want to watch out for these guys. Law abiding citizens can also utilize BT Group’s more than 1,500 hotpots in the event for a price.

Rovio exec says IPO could commence in late 2013

Last year, we said that Rovio, the company behind the widely popular game Angry Birds and the newly released Amazing Alex, might consider an initial public stock offering in the near future. But according to its chief financial officer Mikko Setala today, the Finnish video game developer could seek a stock market listing as early as the end of 2013.

In an interview with the Swedish economic newspaper Dagens Industrii, Setala reportedly confirmed that the company has already prepared a stock market entry for 2013, but added that the shareholders have not decided yet as to when or whether it would even happen. “If we go to the stock market, it would most likely be in the second half of next year. We do not need to raise any more funds at the moment,” Mikko Setala said. (more…)
