Sharp to cut 5,000 jobs in March next year

Sharp might be busy prepping up its display panels for the next generation iPhone and the purported iPad mini this month, but it looks like the Japanese electronics manufacturer is also planning to ax a huge chunk of its workforce following a disappointing quarter for the period that ended last June 30. Sharp is saying today that it is planning to cut approximately 5,000 jobs by the end of March next year, reducing its global workforce by roughly 9 percent. The company said that the cuts will be made either through mandatory retirement and voluntary retirement.

The times have been tough for the Osaka-based corporation that was first established in 1912. Sharp previously announced that its revenue has plunged 28 percent to 458.6 billion yen ($5.9 billion) in Q1 of its fiscal year, and total losses increased from 49.2 billion yen in 2011 to 138.4 billion yen in the first quarter of its fiscal year. The company also expects its losses to widen until March next year, from 30 billion yen ($385 million) to 250 billion yen ($3.2 billion).

House of Representatives considering a bill that will discourage patent trolls

lawsuitReading tech news, some of you guys probably have come across lawsuits between companies and while some are legit, some of these companies are what many consider to be patent trolls and are simply suing because they can over some vague patent that they have bought. However it seems that the House of Representatives is now considering a bill that could help reduce the amount of patent troll-like cases making their way into the courts and into the headlines. According to the folks at Ars Technica, the act dubbed Saving High-Tech Innovators from Egregious Legal Disputes would basically try to discourage companies who might not have a very strong claim by making them pay the legal costs of the defendants should their lawsuit prove unsuccessful. The act, if passed successfully, would cover both computer and software patents, with the latter being defined as, “any process that could be implemented in a computer regardless of whether a computer is specifically mentioned in the patent”. We don’t expect to see this bill passed any time soon, but hopefully it will and we will start seeing less patent troll lawsuits in the future.

Samsung lawyer claims no wrong after showing off excluded evidence

There was some sort of hoo-haa earlier this morning concerning Samsung releasing a bunch of excluded evidence that were related to the lawsuit in the US, and this rather naughty move has apparently attracted the ire of the judge who in the end, requested Samsung’s lawyer, John Quinn, to come up with an explanation as to who was the one behind the press release, after receiving authorization from the legal team. Quinn duly complied, filing an explanation to the court by claiming that the evidence’s release “did not violate any Court Order or any legal or ethical standards.” Quinn also did mention that Samsung hasn’t issued any press release, while sending out “public materials in response to press inquiries.”

This was further iterated by Samsung’s lawyer who further claimed that the material is certainly not some sort of underhanded ploy to “influence jurors” as the selected jury “had been specifically instructed not to read any form of media relating to this case.” We do look forward to see what kind of drama will develop in the courtroom later this Friday.

Eminem sets the record straight with most Facebook likes

There seems to be this popularity contest going on among celebrities in the world of social networks, and you might just be surprised to hear who the “winner” is when it comes to an artist who has the most Facebook “likes”. I would suppose if you mentioned Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and perhaps even Michael Jackson, those perennial favorites would come close, but none of them are able to overhaul Eminem who recently managed to set the pace for the most Likes by a living person with a cool 60.1 million figure. This would place him heads above shoulders from the rest, and it clearly places him at number 5 on the list of the top 10 Facebook pages.

The App Data page showed that Eminem actually gains approximately 179,000 new Likes each week, and if you break it down, that would be 26,854 a day – more that a thousand Likes per hour! Rihanna is close behind at second place with 59.4 million Likes to date. The other Facebook pages with more Likes are not human though, with YouTube (61.2 million), Texas HoldEm Poker (63.8 million), Facebook itself (70.3 million) and the Facebook for Every Phone page (117.5 million) beating out Eminem.

3D Fetus replica is probably the creepiest gift you can give your child

Fetus replicaJapan is a place where pretty much everything goes, especially when it comes to “art” and this 3D fetus replica is no different. Brought to you be Fasotec and Parkside Hiroo Ladies Clinic, anybody who wants a 3D replica of an unborn fetus residing inside them can do so for only $1,200. All you have to do is visit the clinic for an MRI, and you’ll be given a 90 x 60 x 40mm dimension model of your unborn child.

The fetus replica created using a 3D printer that gets the model from the MRI scan. The fetus will be printed with white resin while the mother’s body will be made with clear resin. The position of the fetus in the body will depend on the MRI scan, so I doubt you can make it pose however you want it to. To top it off, the replica fetus will be presented in a posh-looking white jewelry box. I’ve no idea who would want a gift like this, but hey – it’s probably a good way to scare your kid if he/she’s been naughty.

Check out the Return of the Jedi Lego Chess Set

Lego fans, Star Wars fans, and chess fans all have something to rejoice about today, a Return of the Jedi Lego chess set. The board is the third part of a series of chess sets designed by Brandon Griffith, a member of LUGOLA(LEGO Users Group of Los Angeles). Each set in the series commemorates one of the movies in the Star Wars trilogy.

For the Return of the Jedi chess set, you can play as the Imperials on one side and the Rebels on the other. Whenever I play a Star Wars video game, I always choose Imperials, so I would probably choose the Imperial here, not to mention I’d rather have Scout Troopers as my pawns rather than Ewoks. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the set will be mass produced, so fans will have to take their own stab at making the board themselves. Good job on the set Brandon, it would definitely makes me want to play chess more often with a board like that.

Interim CEO Ross Levinsohn steps down from Yahoo

Ross Levinsohn, the interim CEO of Yahoo, has reportedly left the Internet giant after losing to former Google executive and now newly appointed CEO Marissa Mayer. Levinsohn, who joined Yahoo in 2010 serving as Executive Vice President of Americas, was named interim CEO this year after Scott Thompson was fired for allegedly forging his resume. According to AllThingsD, Levinsohn and Mayer may have been negotiating his departure for several days now. Marissa Mayer reportedly sent an email statement confirming Levinsohn’s departure. Mayer said that Levinsohn has been an important and powerful contributor at Yahoo since he joined in 2010.

“During May and June, Ross stepped into an incredibly tough role as interim CEO and did a terrific job – he really helped keep the company moving, closed important deals, and assembled a very talented team. I am very grateful to Ross for his leadership and work throughout his tenure at Yahoo. His contributions will be missed,” Mayer added. “Yahoo is an amazing brand and company, and I leave knowing we did all we could to help inform and entertain more than 700 million users each month. Leading this company has been one of the best experiences of my career, but it is time for me to look for the next challenge,” Levinsohn said.
