Homeless musician launches Kickstarter to support new EP

Anybody remember Daniel Mustard, the homeless musician that gained internet fame in 2009 through a viral video of him performing a cover of the song Creep? Well, despite gaining popularity, he hasn’t been sitting around doing nothing. After releasing an EP in 2010, it looks like he’s ready to hit the studios again to record some new material. Unfortunately, recording music isn’t free (if you don’t own a studio and the equipment) and he needs funds to proceed. In order to fund his new EP, he has decided to turn to the folks who got him big in the first place: his fans on the internet.

Daniel Mustard has launched a Kickstarter project in support of his upcoming EP called Fragments of Bone. For just $5, you can pre-order a digital download of the EP, while $110 or more gets you a live Skype performance and $450 gives you a homeless walking tour of Lower Manhattan. If you’re interested in checking out his music, you can stream his first EP off bandcamp, or watch the viral video that got him big (embedded above). He’s currently got about $3,000 of his $15,000 goal and 46 days left – check out his Kickstarter page here.

Landsat program celebrates 40 years of continuous observation on Earth from space

Today, the Landsat program is celebrating 40 years of continuous earth observation. In case you don’t know what Landsat is, it’s actually a series of Earth-observing satellite missions jointly managed by NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey. First launched on July 23, 1972, Landsat is now the longest running program for the acquisition of satellite imagery of Earth. Google has partnered with the USGS and Carnegie Mellon University to bring tidbits of images from its vast collection of imagery. The result is the video above.

Highlights of the video include the deforestation of the Amazon forest between 1999 to 2011, as well as the huge growth of Las Vegas between 1999 to 2011. “We believe these may be the largest video frames ever created. If you could see the entire video at full resolution, a single frame would be 1.78 terapixels which is 18 football fields’ worth of computer screens laid side-by-side,” Google said. “Google Earth Engine makes it possible for this data to be accessed and used by scientists and others no matter where they are in the world. Watch the video below to learn more about the history of the Landsat program and how Google Earth Engine was used to process and analyze this enormous archive of planetary imagery.”

Lenovo’s CEO distributes $3 million of his bonus to 10,000 of his junior-level employees

We often come across articles where it is stated that a CEO of a big company received X amount of dollars as a bonus, which is usually more money than most of us will see in a lifetime. Lenovo’s CEO, Yang Yuanqing, was recently handed that bonus, $5.2 million to be exact, but what makes this particular story different from the rest is that instead of keeping it all for himself, the CEO decided to hand out $3 million from his bonus to 10,000 junior-level employees. So what constitutes as a junior employee? Well according to reports, this includes receptionists, production-line workers and assistants to name a few – basically employees who might have to work long hours and who might not be making as much as their managers or higher level executives. In an environment where you read about execs who might not deserve their huge bonuses and who are arrested for financial fraud and the likes, it is pretty heartwarming to read about a CEO put his bonus to good use!

Sparrow CEO Dom Leca confirmed the acquisition over the company’s blog. Leca said that its team will be joining Google’s Gmail team to “accomplish a bigger vision” that the company believes will be achieved better with Google on its back. Sparrow supports IMAP and POP and it works with other popular email services including Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail and AOL. While we’ll be working on new things at Google, we will continue to make Sparrow available and provide support for our users,” Leca said.

Self-cleaning paint might deliver smudge-resistant touchscreen displays

The jump from a standard alphanumeric keypad on your mobile phone to a full touchscreen display can be said to be huge – revolutionary, even. Unfortunately, there is one issue with the quantum leap to touchscreen displays, and that would be the problem of smudges. There is still no smudge-free touchscreen display just yet, and this could prove to be annoying at times, although I believe that most of us have come to live with smudges here and there while using our smartphones. What if I told you that there was a solution to this niggling issue? Well, it seems that the very same ingredient used in sunlight-activated plastic lawn furniture might eventually be used for paint for antibacterial walls, and yes, you’ve guessed it right – a coating for smudge-resistant touchscreen displays.

The study on titanium dioxide has been ongoing, where this chemical is commonly found in paint, sunscreens and cosmetics, and is capable of getting rid of microbes and the slime generated after colonizing a particular surface. Whenever sunlight is shone on titanium dioxide molecules, a chemical reaction will begin that results in free radicals, penetrating the cell walls of bacteria and fungi and damaging their DNA. Perhaps a thin coating of the stuff on a touchscreen display will help make short work of skin oils and fingerprints?

Scientists at Princeton uses the Kinect to study the behavior of locusts

For those who have been following the tech news, you guys should be aware by now that Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect has found uses outside of the gaming world. Originally designed for gaming in mind, it seems that the Kinect has found its way into various industries, such as the medical, banking, and now scientific industries. According to a CNN report, a scientist at Princeton by the name of Iain Couzin has been using the Kinect to study the behaviors of locusts’ while in groups and alone. Apparently some of his discoveries using the Kinect were unintended, such as accidentally discovering that locusts in the western Sahara desert form massive swarms in an attempt to fight off other locusts from eating them. Skype boosts Xbox division quarter by 20%

SkypeAccording to Microsoft, which released its quarterly results earlier today, the Xbox division has increased its revenues by 20%, but the credit goes entirely to the Skype acquisition that became official in May (that’s a huge number for Skype). The Xbox business suffered a small decline in fact: during the past quarter, Microsoft has shipped 1.1M Xbox consoles which is not bad at all – however, if you compare that to the 1.7M shipped during the same period last year, it’s significantly down (almost 40%).

Still, Microsoft Xbox is a $9.6B business which generates more than $360M in profits, which is about 1.5X Yahoo or 2X Facebook. Also, Microsoft is not the only player to see hardware sales go lower. Pretty much everyone in the business experienced it, so despite the negative number, Xbox can still claim to the top-selling console for the 18th consecutive month.

If you wonder why Skype falls into the Xbox division, it’s simple: that organization inside Microsoft handles most of the “consumer” stuff.

Mother hacks school computers to change her children’s grades

Northwestern Lehigh School DistrictIf there’s one thing my mother never did for me (thankfully) it would be hack into my school’s computers to change my grades – and getting caught in the process. Well, the children of Catherine Venusto had a chance to experience that. According to reports, Venusto, a former employee of the Northwestern Lehigh School District in New Tripoli, Pennsylvania, was charged on three counts of unlawful use of a computer and computer trespassing.

The lady was said to have used the passwords of the superintendent and 9 other employees to access the system’s student records to change the grades of her children. For her daughter – a failing grade turned into a medial exception, while her son’s grade was bumped up from 98% to 99% (why she even bothered, I have no idea). She’s probably never allowed near a school computer again, but after a $30,000 fee to be bailed out, I guess she probably learnt her lesson. I wonder how the kids felt about it. What’s the most outrageous thing your mother has ever done for you?

Burger King employee dips his dirty shoes on lettuce and posts picture online

Adding to the shameful Mcdonald’s scandal we reported yesterday, the famous hamburger restaurant Burger King appears to be next in line. If you love Burger King’s signature hamburgers, perhaps this report will change your mind. What you are seeing above is a photo of a purported Burger King employee standing on two containers of lettuce. The photo was posted on the imageboard website 4Chan with the caption on it that reads: “This is the lettuce you eat at Burger King.”

Thankfully, concerned citizens that reportedly included the notorious hacking group Anonymous, took action and used the employee’s GPS data embedded in the photo to locate the exact fast food restaurant’s address. Local newspaper Cleveland Scene visited the Burger King branch yesterday and asked the manager named Andrea for confirmation. When the photo was shown to her, Ms. Andrea reportedly said, “Oh, I know who that is. He’s getting fired.” Meanwhile, Burger King has issued a statement to Fox 8 News. Full statement after the break.
