McDonald’s denies employees assaulted Dr. Mann

Dr. Steve MannYesterday we reported that Dr. Steve Mann, the EyeTap’s creator, was allegedly assaulted in a McDonald’s in Paris after explaining that his eye glasses could not be removed because it was permanently attached to his head. Well, the news was brought to light and caused quite a stir in the media. And today, McDonald’s replied to our email with a statement about the situation (see it below). According to the results of its investigations, the restaurant’s staff did nothing wrong and only interacted with Dr. Mann politely and there was no physical altercation.

Hi Elaine – We share the concern regarding Dr. Mann’s account of his July 1 visit to a McDonald’s in Paris.

McDonald’s France was made aware of Dr. Mann’s complaints on July 16, and immediately launched a thorough investigation. The McDonald’s France team has contacted Dr. Mann and is awaiting further information from him.  In addition, several staff members involved have been interviewed individually,  and all independently and consistently expressed that their interaction with Dr. Mann was polite and did not involve a physical altercation.  Our crew members and restaurant security staff have informed us that they did not damage any of Mr. Mann’s personal possessions.

While we continue to learn more about the situation, we urge everyone not to speculate or jump to conclusions before all the facts are known.  Our goal is to provide a welcoming environment and stellar service to McDonald’s customers around the world

Thank you.

Since we weren’t there to witness the account first hand, and there was no video footage of the incident, it’s hard to say who’s right or wrong. But with photographs on his blog showing the McDonald’s staff tearing up his doctor’s letter, Dr. Mann is likely to be the victim of this incident. McDonald’s claims that it will continue to investigate the situation though we doubt it’ll be changing its statement anytime soon.

Tweet sends Bahrain activist to jail

Bahraini human rights defender Nabeel Rajab was sentenced to three months in prison for posting a tweet that criticized Bahrain’s prime minister – Prince Khalifa bin Sulman al-Khalifa. Rajab reportedly tweeted, “Khalifa, leave the residents of Al Mahraq, its Sheikhs and its elderly. Everyone knows that you are not popular here, and if there wasn’t a need for money, they wouldn’t have gone out to receive you. When will you step down?”

Rajab is also President of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights or BCHR, a nonprofit and non-government organization that works to promote human rights in Bahrain. This is not also the first time for Rajab to be detained. On Monday this week, supporters demanded the release of Nabeel Rajab and used Twitter as a tool to support the cause. “Every day there are a thousand people insulting a thousand people; this isn’t logical. Normally the charge of insult leads to just a fine,” Rajab’s lawyer said. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa continues to be the longest-serving prime minister in the world.

Scientists studying frogs to develop new algorithm for wireless networks

The Japanese tree frog is a frog species that thrives in Japan, Korea, and in the northeastern part of China. Unknown to many, the male Japanese tree frog has actually developed the capability to vary its calls so that females can identify the frog from the rest. Male Japanese tree frogs can reportedly desynchronize their calls to avoid confusing their targeted female partners. You can read the rest of the research here.

Now, the scientists over at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia are using the Japanese tree frogs’ unusual calling behavior to develop an algorithm that can assign colors to network nodes on wireless networks. In a move to solve what is known as graph coloring, a problem of assigning colors to nodes in a graph, the scientists are using the desynchronization behavior of the frogs to create a process that can assign different colors to network nodes. Photos of toys using iPads and iPhones are pretty cute

Snapping a photo of someone or yourself using a gadget is not new, in fact you might see such a photo and dismiss it because of how “normal” it is. However Instagram user @santlov has created a series of photos where he photographs toys using “gadgets”. Pictured above is none other than Toy Story’s Woody taking a presumably Instagram photo of his sushi with his iPhone. We have to admit that this is pretty cute and pretty clever and Santlov has tons of other photos of toys interacting with technology, i.e. DSLR cameras, iPads, MacBooks, etc. So if you’ve ever wondered what toys might look like playing with gadgets, pop on over to Santlov’s Instagram page for the rest of the photos! Pretty cute, huh?

Walls that function as mirrors?

Do you happen to have a narcissistic streak in you? Assuming you have answered that question in the affirmative, then you might be interested to check out this particular imaging technique that turns your walls into mirrors. Yes sir, this “optical power” is achieved through the clever implementation of scientific principles as well as experiments in a laboratory instead of just wishful thinking. A study that was recently published mentioned, “Looking around corners and through thin turbid layers in real time with scattered incoherent light” has attracted its fair share of attention, where a spatial light modulator will be able to undo the scattering which makes objects opaque or non-reflecting.

This paves the way for real-time imaging through opaque materials in addition to around highly scattering optical diffusers. The primary use for such a technique at this point in time? It will most probably see action in biological and medical studies, although I believe that someone will think of something else in due time.

SkyCube: the world’s first social space mission

SkyCubeIf  you like the idea of broadcasting messages from space, the SkyCube might just be your cup of tea. The makers of SkySafari astronomy apps have just launched their latest project on Kickstarter called SkyCube. Basically it’s a nano-satellite that will be shot out to space and will orbit the planet for 90 days and then shoot back down to earth. When the satellite is in space, it can broadcast messages from users and snap pictures for users to download onto their smartphones.

If you’ve ever wanted to be part of a space mission without having to actually get into a suit and strap yourself to a rocket, the SkyCube comes pretty close. However, the project is still a long way off from its target of $82,500 but it has 57 days to go. Pledges start at $1 for a single message broadcast (120-characters), and $6 for six messages and one photograph. However, if you’re feeling rich, you’ll be able to pledge as much as $10,000 for an exclusive invitation and flight tickets to the launch, 10,000 message broadcasts, up to 2,000 images, a movie of Earth from orbit, a radio receiver, and T-shirts.
