Timbuk2 reveals new bag with internal storage

Timbuk2, a popular manufacturer of travel bags made for all different occasions, although their tech bags happen to be their most popular options, has unveiled a new line of bags with the ability to charge gadgets. Timbuk2 teamed up with Joey Energy to create the Power Commute messenger bag and Power Q backpack, which both include Joey’s T1 power supply.

The charger in the bag is water resistant and has a corded satellite USB for charging. The power source is charged by simply plugging it into the wall and requires no push of buttons and will immediately start charging once plugged in. The Power Commute, a TSA compliant laptop bag, includes a removable shoulder strap and a faux-fur lined phone/gadget compartment. The Power Q is a backpack model and features a laptop compartment as well as a ventilated back panel. Both bags will be available on Timbuk2′s website starting in October for $199 and will begin hitting retail stores February.

Facebook and Yahoo! form new partnership, resolve patent dispute

Image via AllthingsD

Facebook v. Yahoo! has officially come to an end today. The two tech giants have agreed upon a legal truce which will include a patent portfolio cross-license.

Not only did they settle the patent issue, they also have formed a new advertising partnership. Facebook will help bring Yahoo!’s large media event coverage by collaborating on social integration on Yahoo! The fact that Facebook didn’t have to pay anything is seen by observers as a victory for the social network. In the end, it may help Yahoo more than cash in the long run.

If you did not follow this, Yahoo sued Facebook a couple of months before their initial public offering, probably with the idea of adding additional pressure on the social network. Unfortunately for Yahoo, Facebook has the will and the means to stay in the fight. Yahoo’s new CEO (Ross Levinsohn) has reportedly extended an olive branch to Facebook in order to settle this.

Lego-inspired bridge in Germany looks fascinating

We all love Lego don’t we? Well, so does German street artist Martin Heuwold a.k.a. Megx. But he took his love for Lego and art to a higher level by giving a bridge in Wuppertal, Germany the perfect Lego makeover. Megx transformed the bridge into a giant Lego-like structure using colored panels that looked like Lego bricks. Megx said that he had to get the full cooperation of the city and that the project took about four weeks to complete. Now, the 250 square meter-bridge that used to be a part the Wuppertal Bewegung e.V. – an old train line that is now used as a pedestrian and cycle path – is now widely considered a local attraction. Isn’t that cool? You can check out his work via his official website.

Palencia Civic Center redesigned to stunning effect

There is value in heritage buildings in cities all over the world, but on the other hand, some dilapidated and sick buildings do need a facelift – and desperately, too. The EXIT Architects decided to take up this challenge by transforming the Palencia Civic Center into something out of this world. Originally a prison, the Palencia Civic Center is a 19th century building that literally had its roof torn off, while EXIT Architects weaved their redesign magic all over the place, resulting in what you see above.

The original prison was built after the Neo-Mudéjar style which became extremely popular in Spain at that time. It was made out mostly of decorative brick, coupled with tile roofs and more often than not arranged in elaborate patterns, EXIT Architects decided to merge the old and the new. While the brick facades and structure remain in place, you will find metallic geometric forms that make the entire building look different. Zinc panels were retro-fitted with translucent “windows,” flooding the interior with daylight, flushing out vampires and other nasties in the process.

When dusk falls, these panels seem to glow thanks to the lighting within for a truly breathtaking effect.

Manual 3D Sandcastle Printer

So, those of us living in tropical countries or who reside in the northern hemisphere and are about to experience summer, a trip to the nearest beach (or one that is far away will also do) is certainly worth looking into – especially building memories with your little ones are one of the best ways to a positive memorable childhood, instead of just being an absentee parent who showers gifts and money to make up for your non-presence. Building a sandcastle has taken on a whole new method, thanks to the Manual 3D Sandcastle Printer that you see here. Forget about the old school buckets and using just your hands alone, tools like this plastic sand and water funnel ought to get your budding engineer all excited about his or her trip to the beach.

Of course, this is nowhere near a standard issue 3D printer, although it does help you place sand in difficult to reach areas with more finesse. There is no guarantee against waves destroying your final sculpture as well, so make sure there is a camera on hand in order for you to capture that masterpiece before it falls prey to time and tide.

RIM reportedly limiting vacations and ordering six-day work weeks to its Ottawa employees

Research In Motion is reportedly limiting summer vacations and ordering six-day work weeks for many of its employees in its Ottawa headquarters. According to the daily newspaper Ottawa Citizen, RIM allegedly confirmed that it is curtailing vacations due to its plan to push out its highly anticipated BlackBerry 10 operating system sooner than expected. “The successful launch of the BlackBerry 10 platform, and the delivery of high quality, full-featured BlackBerry 10 smartphones, remains the company’s No. 1 priority, and we’re incredibly proud of the commitment shown by all RIM employees as we work toward this goal,” a RIM spokeswoman told the publication.

Earlier this week, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins spoke to CBC’s Metro Morning radio show and said that the company isn’t in a death spiral. The CEO was also quoted saying, “There’s nothing wrong with the company as it exists right now.” Also this week, RIM senior executives held a press conference to assure its customers that the company isn’t done yet. As you know, RIM previously said that its BlackBerry 10 phones will be coming in fall, but unexpected problems have forced the company to delay the launch until 2013.

3D-printed shoes offer totally alien look

You can say that purchasing a pair of shoes can be quite the challenge for some of us, especially since both our feet are not of the exact same size, and sometimes, this is more obvious for some of us compared to others. Getting a pair of custom made shoes is always a good idea, but can everyone afford such a lifestyle? Perhaps with the ever lowering prices of 3D printers, this might happen, but until that happens, you might want to enjoy a range of 3D-printed shoes, with one example that you can ogle over above.

Alien life forms and skeletal details are the inspiration for this rather eccentric collection of 3D-printed shoes, don’t you think so? Hailing from the mind of UK fashion footwear designer Janina Alleyne, she came up with some high heels designs that would certainly keep the curious satisfied. Not too sure if they will be comfortable in the long haul though, but then again, breaking fashion rarely is. Meant more for fawning over instead of walking, perhaps someone can come up with similar designs albeit being far more comfortable.

Bill Gates reportedly rejected a touchscreen e-reader prototype in 1998

Bill Gates at the Comdex computer show in 1998

Unknown to many, Microsoft engineers way back in 1998 presented an e-reader prototype that featured a touch screen interface to Bill Gates, which was eventually turned down and dismissed because the founder thought it wasn’t right. This interesting report and a few more are featured in Vanity Fair’s “Microsoft’s Downfall: Inside the Executive E-mails and Cannibalistic Culture That Felled a Tech Giant” report that was published yesterday. According to Kurt Eichenwald of Vanity Fair, in 1998, Microsoft had a prototype e-reader ready to go. But when the engineers presented it to Gates, he promptly gave it a thumbs-down.

“He didn’t like the user interface, because it didn’t look like Windows,” one engineer involved in the project told the publication. The group working on the prototype was eventually asked to focus on developing software for its Office suite. Microsoft also reportedly turned down the idea of a micro-messaging system. The said idea was the brainchild of a young developer of MSN Messenger who noticed that a few college students were using AOL’s AIM to constantly give status updates. Unfortunately, the idea was also turned down by Microsoft. Two days ago, in an interview with Charlie Rose, Bill Gates explained why the iPad was so successful saying, ” Apple did some things better than I did.”

Kodak granted approval to auction its patent portfolio

Kodak won an approval from the Bankruptcy Court earlier this week to auction its patent portfolios. Both Apple and FlashPoint have previously asserted ownership of a few of Kodak’s 1,100 patents, however, the Bankruptcy Court has finally ruled that all of the patents found in its patent portfolios are of Kodak’s.

Additionally, Kodak has been granted by the court the right to sell its patents, subject to the applicable provisions of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Kodak is selling the patents under section 363 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code which permits a sale free and clear of any adverse claim or interest. The patents will be sold in a fair, competitive process overseen by the Bankruptcy Court.

At closing, the winning bidder can obtain an order of the Bankruptcy Court that protects it against any third-party ownership claims. “We are gratified that the Court has enabled us to move ahead with our patent auction in a timely manner and with clarity on ownership for the winning buyer,” Kodak Vice President Timothy Lynch said. The auction will be held sometime in August.
